Margo (dandylines) I read this after reading two novels full of metaphors and needing a lot of thought. This book is altogether different. In some ways it is a light read about a grumpy old man with staunch principles whose routine is upset by new neighbors. On the surface it is just that - a funny read, but I found it a deeply moving novel about people's accepting each other with love and causing them to change when needed. It is about families and life. I laughed out loud on nearly every chapter - something I rarely do and shed a few tears to at certain points. I will not spoil the rest - it has to be read. I would love to have this book made into a movie with either Bill Murray or Tom Hanks or the actor from Doc Martin as the star. Everyone needs a good laugh from time to time and this is it. My husband gets to read it next and then I am recommending it to yet another book club.

I felt it was a Nordic version of It's A Wonderful Life.
