Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Harry Potter, #6) Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince question

Why didn't Harry just use Aguamenti straight at Dumbledore rather than at the cup?

I never got it. It was the simplest of all escapes. He could have just pointed his wand in dumbledore's mouth and uttered the spell. There was no point trying to fill the cup with the spell then having dumbledore drink it. Anyone else wonder this?

Because Harry is honestly really stupid.

I thought the same thing.

The only thing that will save this plot element from a flaw is this:

What if aguamenti fills things up with water, so pointing it at someone's mouth would fill their throat etc, so it would be dangerous? It may not be water coming out of the wand like a sink.

Saim Cheeda Hagrid and Harry put out the fire Bellatrix had put on Hagrid's house later on, using Aguamenti. So that can't apply ...more

Ruby Sometimes spells are jets and sometimes they just happen. Could be both for this one?

Well to me doing that would seem like the obvious choice... but then the whole plot would crumble. Sometimes the characters need to be stupid and make stupid choices to save the plot I guess. Dumbledore needed to die, other wise he could have just killed Voldemort himself. Also, when the only person that kept you safe from Voldemort is going to die, your thoughts would have been clouded with panic

The book made it sound like when the water, that wasn't from the lake, neared Dumbledore's mouth, it would disappear. I think that Riddle must've thought of this because it seems too easy a solution.

In my opinion, whatever curse Voldemort put on the island made the water dissappear if it gets close to Dumbledore and has nothing to do with the cup! Correct me if I got it wrong, please😳!

Even if he did that the water wold disappear as soon as it would touch dumbledore's mouth

For plot reasons and/or Harry was too panicky to think straight.

give him a break, he was panicking, he thought Dumbledore was dying or going cray-cray and they're in a seriously creepy cave while you're probably sitting snug while reading the book and besides have you ever thought that Voldy wouldn't have thought of that too among other things and made sure there weren't too many loopholes?

well obviously rowling didn't so...
