You took to the polls and voted for Room by Emma Donoghue by Emma Donoghue to be one of April's Book of the Month covering the theme of Colours of the Rainbow.

I've wanted to read this book for a very long time and ever since the movie has come out, I've avoided it just so I can read the book first. For those whom have read/watched it, please reframe from spoiling but do feel free to discuss the book with us as we read. If you need to spoil, remember to hide it under "spoiler" option so we cannot be tempted to read it.
So grab your copy people's and let's get reading in April.

Amanda Taylor (georgiagirl1315) I read this book in December and absolutely loved it! Can't wait to see what others think of it! :)

I did that last month with Throne of Glass lol sometimes we just can't wait

Bobbi (schadenfreudian) This came into the library for me today and I'm looking forward to reading it. I've heard good things.

That's great. I can't wait to read this also, as I've heard great things also.

That's OK, we will forgive you Kasey.

I think so too.

Brandy | 27 comments I think I am the odd ball. I read this one a while back and hated it. I know it was several books ago but I had high hopes then I never had that connection. And I did the audio, the kid bugged me.

Initially, I felt the same way. But I held on and started skipping all the cartoon references. Fortunately, it became bearable then.

I think it might have been better if I didn't listen to the audio. I read this with another group and I think everyone else liked the book.

I started reading this and had to stop for the moment cause I wasn't connecting. Having a hard time adjusting to it being told in the young boys voice.

As I said, everyone goes through this problem. But don't give up. Believe me, it gets better.

Will keep at it :D

Kasey | 284 comments I would totally agree with that. I just finished it, and I'm interested to see the movie. I think the movie will actually be more emotional for me simply because there will be a visual element that is lost in the book by having it be in a 5 year old boy's voice. I do have a pretty good book hangover though.

I want to watch the movie too! X)

I was never able to connect. I hope you do, and enjoy it more than I did.

I haven't been compelled to keep reading at the moment but if I do, I hope it's worth my while.

Oh no, I have this on audio. I hope that I can get through it. I think I may have started it at one time or another. AND I think I stopped listening to it because the reading got on my nerves. Maybe I will feel different this go around.

Sylvia | 13086 comments Mod
I haven't had time to read for the past few days so I haven't gotten back to it yet, either. I have to say though, I'm not super excited to lol

Bobbi (schadenfreudian) I'm terrible. My boyfriend just deployed on Monday so I've only gotten a few chapters in as I have had a really hard time getting into the mind frame to read this. I'm not sure if it's my mood or the POV that's making this one so hard for me.*

*This poster is she of many excuses for her procrastination, haha!

Amanda Taylor (georgiagirl1315) Keep reading - it took me until I was about a third of the way in to figure out Jack's voice and his way of speaking. It's difficult at first, but the rest of the book makes it totally worth it.

Agreed! :-)

Okay, I got halfway through the book and I gave up. I DNF it! I'm sorry, it bored me and he's voice annoyed me so much. I don't know why, but I felt no connection what's so ever. I was in pain, like I wanted to bang my head against a wall, hearing Jack tell the story.

That may be why I stopped at the first chapter.

Wish I had the sense to do that lol instead I tried because the majority love this book.

message 32: by Nicole (new)

Nicole I haven't read the book yet, but I saw the movie (its very rare for me to watch a movie first). I loved the movie. I had no problem connecting with the characters. Maybe because there was the visual aspect to it and you're not experiencing the whole thing through the boys "voice". I thought the actor that played the child was amazing!

Sylvia | 13086 comments Mod
I think I will just watch the movie. This book definitely needs a lot of visualising and I just couldn't.

I didn't realize the movie was out yet. Man, I am so behind on everything.

Brandy | 27 comments I thought I was alone in not liking this book. I found it painful listening.

Not sure if it's out on dvd yet but it was in the cinema's not long ago.

Bobbi (schadenfreudian) I conquered it! Aaaand really didn't like it at all.

Bobbi wrote: "I conquered it! Aaaand really didn't like it at all."

I'm glad I stopped halfway then ugh

Bobbi (schadenfreudian) I almost did so many times but I didn't want to let it beat me. The idea of a child narrator is cool in theory. In practice, eh...

Sylvia | 13086 comments Mod
You did well to finish the book.

message 42: by Deb (new) - rated it 4 stars

Deb (dlmetzler) I liked it. I gave it 4 stars, but I would actually rate it somewhere between a 3 and 4. It wasn't the absolute best book I've ever read, but it wasn't iffy enough to deserve a 3. This book broke my heart into little pieces. That ending...the feels!

That is what makes me want to read it Deborah.

Khristina Chess (khristina_chess) It took me awhile to get into Jack's voice. I didn't think I would like it, but then the story drew me in. I couldn't put the book down. I read it in a few days. I loved seeing how the experience affected him and Ma. The ending was really poignant.
