My copy of Les Mis has all the locations spelled out. But, I have seen some copies where the first character we meet is spelled out "The Bishop of D_______". I have seen some other books where locations are listed like that.

Do any literary scholars know why that is done sometimes?

Kirstin | 92 comments I think this is the same as "This book is a work of fiction. Any references to real people or real places..." that you see in novels now. Basically, a legal issue.

Valerie (darthval) | 45 comments I was actually surprised at how small a role Fantine played in the book. I was kind of expecting more.

Valerie - yes, considering the whole first section is named after her!
