Lara E Brown (larasaurus) Anything you want to say about our book for April? Share it here!

I've yet to read anything by Douglas Adams, much to my embarrassment. Anyone else reading him for the first time?

Lara E Brown (larasaurus) Great review Red!

I feel like I wasn't very kind to the book last night, but I did really enjoy it once it got going. I just don't like feeling like an uneducated fool once I've finished reading something...

In Xanadu did Khubla Khan a stately pleasure dome decree....
Everyone gets Coleridge for Christmas!

Umberto Eco's final book was so impenetrable that I had to put it down and spend a good few months reading up on both the French Revolution and Garibaldi. The main character was the only fictional creation everyone else had a place and role in history. Even though I'm very familiar with Dumas - who also crops up - it made me feel like a right Dumb Arse, to be constantly wondering who was who.

Now, Eco is my favourite author (love, love, love Foucault's Pendulum), so there's a lot I'm prepared to put up with, including revision. I enjoyed the fact that Dirk Gently's controversial plot point wasn't an intransigent pop cultural reference, especially with so much of the book was embedded in 80s culture, but ....

... No. Coleridge for everyone!!! Learn the wonders of the Sunless Sea! Recite the Rime of the Ancient Mariner at parties. Become pub quiz gods! And never, ever shoot Albatrosses.
