New What Are You Reading thread since the old one seems to be acting up.

message 2: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie Just started Riders (Riders, #1) by Veronica Rossi last night and loving it. I was hooked after 10 pages!

Yay for the new thread! :D

Ashley - I've been on the fence about whether to read that one or not. I did not like Under The Never Sky much, but Riders sounds really interesting. I might still give it a try!

message 4: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie I don't have much interest in Under the Never Sky - it sounds too romancey for me and I'm not a fan of the cover. But I like this so far, I'm around 40 pages in as of last night :) anything to do with the Four Horsemen and I'm there.

That sounds cool Ashley. Let me know your final thoughts please.

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

I dnf-ed two books today. Hopefully The Society of Thirteen by Gareth P. Jones will be better.

It happens Oda! That is why I am so picky about making sure the majority of my GR friends like most of my books anymore before I even start them!

p.s. this thread seems much faster Brigid. Good idea!

Yeah that was my main problem with it. Too much insta-love, and I didn't like either of the main characters. (Also there was this weird thing where the guy had like super-smelling powers, and he thought the girl's period smelled like flowers??? o_o And that's like the one thing I remember about it, lol.) But glad to hear you're enjoying Riders so far; like Heidi, I'm interested in hearing your final thoughts on it!

Yes, I have periods with only great books and peroods with only dnf-books. Both books I dnf-ed were by good authors that I have read before, but hey not every book can be a winner.

Just added Wolf by Wolf. I'm interested to see what you think when you're done.

I'm almost done with Monsters of Men (60% and love it, of course). For now, I'm going to DNF Winter, so what should i read next?

I finished The Society of Thirteen by Gareth P. Jones one hour ago. It was really good.

Starting The New Policeman (New Policeman, #1) by Kate Thompson now.

Kristen Taber | 506 comments I'm sorry....any book is fine. My shelf isn't up-to-date for all the books I own (sales get me in trouble) so it would take us all day to go through thst list..lol. I'm just looking for what you guys think are amazing and might follow Chaos Walking without feeling like it's a terrible book unjustifiably. I imagine this book mourning period will be bad!

Kristen wrote: "I'm good for anything, but good enough to follow Chaos Walking. That might be a tall order!"

Kristen have you read anything by Melina Marchetta?? IMO she is one of the only authors fit to follow Patrick Ness. Otherwise one of my other favorites is Markus Zusak- The Book Thief and I Am the Messenger are both phenomenal IMO. Or there is always The Monstrumologist - have you read that one??

@Kristen - Haha it is really hard to find anything as good as Chaos Walking. :D But I agree with Heidi's recommendations! Also I'll add The Raven Boys, since we were just talking about it recently, and it's one of my favorites!!

message 22: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie I would second the Raven Boys and add The Scorpio Races - it's a beautiful standalone.

message 23: by Kristen (last edited Apr 02, 2016 02:24PM) (new)

Kristen Taber | 506 comments Oooh...Ok, so many good recs! Since I have The Scorpio Races and started it, I'll go to that next. Thanks for the reminder. And now I have a bunch of others to follow in its wake. Thanks again. You're awesome at recommendations.

Heidi....The Book Thief. That was seriously one of the best books I've read in so long. I thought it was better than Chaos Walking, really, since it was so deep and incredibly well written. Ah, but it made me cry and cry and cry!

The Book Thief is one of my all-time favorites. Such a brilliant book. <3

message 25: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie Book Thief was fantastic, I need to reread that eventually.

message 26: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 6961 comments Mod
The Book Thief is one of my all time favorite books ever Kristen and definitely gives Chaos Walking a run for the money. You should try his other books I Am the Messenger. It was so different from Book Thief but still wonderful IMO. I also agree with Scorpio Races. That is my favorite book by Maggie so far that I have read.

message 27: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Taber | 506 comments Thanks, Heidi. I definitely will!

Becky (bek11) | 451 comments I loved Scorpio Races after I got used to the writing style.

I liked I Am the Messenger but can't say that I was a fan of the ending. But I think I'm in the minority for that one.

I am currently reading 3 different Junior Fiction books. If I ever actually finish one, I'll have to post it. (I think 2 have a good shot of getting completed. Not sure about the last one.)

I will be interested to hear about your Junior Fiction reads, Becky!

message 38: by Ashley Marie (new)

Ashley Marie I'm around the halfway mark in Riders right now and liking it, it's really intense. The lead girl annoys me bc she knows more than she's telling and I always get irritated when that happens. Another source of annoyance is ending sentences with "so." I know she's evoking speech patterns, but that's one of the current trends I despise. Otherwise though the story itself is fantastic.

The two junior fiction books that I think I will finish are The Island of Dr. Libris by Chris Grabenstein and The Mark of the Dragonfly by Jaleigh Johnson . The third one is about a book scavenger hunt.

My son loved The Island of Dr. Libris so I thought I should check it out.

Both AMAZING books!!

message 45: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments Thanks for starting up a new thread! I'm noticing this in so many other groups, I'm guessing its Goodreads new format. It can't handle really long threads :(

I've kind of been slow on reading the last week...life happens! I had a scrapbook retreat this last weekend (so fun!) and I also caught a really bad cold, so its hard to read with my head hurting so bad, plus I get zonked out after 5 minutes!

But I finished recently:

Winter (The Lunar Chronicles, #4) by Marissa Meyer 5 stars, absolutely ADORED it!
Wendy Darling Stars by Colleen Oakes 4 stars, a pretty good Pan retelling! Very twisted.
Dead of Night (Dead of Night, #1) by Jonathan Maberry 5 stars. This is the first book in a short adult prequel series to Rot and Ruin. This book in particular tells EXACTLY how First Night happened. Very very interesting back story, plus loads of suspenseful action. I LOVED it!

Right now I'm almost done with Stars Above (The Lunar Chronicles #5) by Marissa Meyer , loving it! I didn't want to leave this world after Winter, so I'm so happy she wrote so many short stories about the characters! She could write a whole series on Thorne as far as I'm concerned :)

Next I'm starting a reread of Through the Zombie Glass (White Rabbit Chronicles, #2) by Gena Showalter and also reading The Girl of Fire and Thorns Stories (Fire and Thorns, #0.5-0.7) by Rae Carson

I've noticed it happening in a bunch of groups too, Jenny. And yeah it only seemed to happen after they redid the site. Ah well. :P Yay I'm glad you loved Winter! And I'm happy to hear Stars Above is good––I still need to read that.

JENNY: nice! still a reading machine even with a cold. Do you know how many books are in the White Rabbit Chronicles?

I just finished...
Ten by Gretchen McNeil

I just finished it. its good, interesting, but very cliched. A lot of people are a bit mad because they say its a rip-off of And Then There Were None, but I think its more of a re-telling. A very close re-telling.

I like the mystery enough, but the characters are not above and beyond. Writing is good, but, like I said, very cliche.

message 50: by [deleted user] (new)

I finished A Company of Swans by Eva Ibbotson ehhh...a middle book.

Started The Wrath and the Dawn (The Wrath and the Dawn, #1) by Renee Ahdieh
