A.L. Sowards | 2481 comments What are your favorite fantasy novels by an LDS author?

Last year I read the Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson. It was so good that I didn't even mind having to get up to take care of a newborn at 3am, because that meant I could find out what happened next.

Alisa | 24 comments The False Prince - I enjoyed this whole Young Adult series by Jennifer Nielsen

Defy by Sara Larsen - I've only read the first book but I really liked it

The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale - I liked the whole Books of Bayern series

Hourglass Door Trilogy by Lisa Mangum - This series may be more paranormal than Fantasy (sometimes I don't really know where to draw the line, plus it has been a long time since I've read it, but I remember really liking it)

(And I second the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson)

The Bird and the Sword by Amy Harmon The Bird and the Sword by Amy Harmon

Swallow, daughter, pull them in, those words that sit upon your lips. Lock them deep inside your soul, hide them ‘til they’ve time to grow. Close your mouth upon the power, curse not, cure not, ‘til the hour. You won’t speak and you won’t tell, you won’t call on heaven or hell. You will learn and you will thrive. Silence, daughter. Stay alive.

The day my mother was killed, she told my father I wouldn’t speak again, and she told him if I died, he would die too. Then she predicted the king would sell his soul and lose his son to the sky.

My father has a claim to the throne, and he is waiting in the shadows for all of my mother’s words to come to pass. He wants desperately to be king, and I just want to be free.

But freedom will require escape, and I’m a prisoner of my mother’s curse and my father’s greed. I can’t speak or make a sound, and I can’t wield a sword or beguile a king. In a land purged of enchantment, love might be the only magic left, and who could ever love… a bird?

It is a truth universally acknowledged that the average regency novel would be much improved with the addition of high seas battles, magic, and pirates.

A Regency Romance unlike any other.

And that some myths from around the world are true.

Lanette (locallan) | 19 comments Well, if we're talking Fantasy, then we have to talk about Brandon Sanderson. His initial Mistborn trilogy has already been listed, but his very first published book was Elantris. Being a first book, some have said it was hard to get through (including some of my friends); however, I didn't have a problem with it at all. Maybe it has something to do with my being single, but it resonated with me. He has since added a novella that covers in more detail, some events towards the end of Elantris. I think he pulled it out so as not to interfere with the flow of the story. Also, there's The Emperor's Soul, another novella, which takes place on the same planet as Elantris, but with totally different characters and newly revealed additions to it's magic-system.

Elantris was the capital of Arelon: gigantic, beautiful, literally radiant, filled with benevolent beings who used their powerful magical abilities for the benefit of all. Yet each of these demigods was once an ordinary person until touched by the mysterious transforming power of the Shaod. Ten years ago, without warning, the magic failed. Elantrians became wizened, leper-like, powerless creatures, and Elantris itself dark, filthy, and crumbling.

Arelon's new capital, Kae, crouches in the shadow of Elantris. Princess Sarene of Teod arrives for a marriage of state with Crown Prince Raoden, hoping -- based on their correspondence -- to also find love. She finds instead that Raoden has died and she is considered his widow. Both Teod and Arelon are under threat as the last remaining holdouts against the imperial ambitions of the ruthless religious fanatics of Fjordell. So Sarene decides to use her new status to counter the machinations of Hrathen, a Fjordell high priest who has come to Kae to convert Arelon and claim it for his emperor and his god.

But neither Sarene nor Hrathen suspect the truth about Prince Raoden. Stricken by the same curse that ruined Elantris, Raoden was secretly exiled by his father to the dark city. His struggle to help the wretches trapped there begins a series of events that will bring hope to Arelon, and perhaps reveal the secret of Elantris itself.

A rare epic fantasy that doesn't recycle the classics and that is a complete and satisfying story in one volume, Elantris is fleet and fun, full of surprises and characters to care about. It's also the wonderful debut of a welcome new star in the constellation of fantasy.

Lanette (locallan) | 19 comments No offense to A.L., but I just have to get Brandon Sanderson entire Mistborn acknowledged. There's the original trilogy, plus two Novellas, that's a bit Dystopian Fantasy. The world was being overcome by darkness, but was saved by an egomaniac control freak, so yeah, not really saved, huh? And now the darkness/mist is overflowing again:

In a world where ash falls from the sky, and mist dominates the night, an evil cloaks the land and stifles all life. The future of the empire rests on the shoulders of a troublemaker and his young apprentice. Together, can they fill the world with color once more?

In Brandon Sanderson's intriguing tale of love, loss, despair and hope, a new kind of magic enters the stage — Allomancy, a magic of the metals.

The Eleventh Metal (Mistborn, #0.5) by Brandon Sanderson The Final Empire (Mistborn, #1) by Brandon Sanderson The Well of Ascension (Mistborn, #2) by Brandon Sanderson The Hero of Ages (Mistborn, #3) by Brandon Sanderson Secret History (Mistborn, #3.5) by Brandon Sanderson

Then there's the follow-up four-book series that takes place 300 years after the first trilogy. The world reborn with free agency intact -- it's got a kind of frontier/western/steampunk feel to it, but the fourth is looking likely for 2018, hopefully!! Love Wax and Wayne!!! Ah, heck, love them all!!!:

Centuries after the Mistborn trilogy, Scadrial is on the verge of modernity - railroads, electric street lights, and skyscrapers. Waxillium Ladrian can Push on metals with his Allomancy and use Feruchemy to become lighter or heavier at will. After 20 years in the dusty Roughs, in the city of Elendel, the new head of a noble house may need to keep his guns.

Lanette (locallan) | 19 comments Now onto EPIC Fantasy. Ten big books, with Brandon Sanderson promising a book every two years, now that The Wheel of Time has been completed. So, two books have been released with the third due in 2017:

Speak again the ancient oaths,
Life before death.
Strength before weakness.
Journey before Destination.
and return to men the Shards they once bore.
The Knights Radiant must stand again.

Roshar is a world of stone swept by tempests that shape ecology and civilization. Animals and plants retract; cities are built in shelter. In centuries since ten orders of Knights fell, their Shardblade swords and Shardplate armor still transform men into near-invincible warriors. Wars are fought for them, and won by them.

In one such war on ruined Shattered Plains, slave Kaladin struggles to save his men and fathom leaders who deem them expendable, in senseless wars where ten armies fight separately against one foe.

Brightlord Dalinar Kholin commands one of those other armies. Fascinated by ancient text The Way of Kings, troubled by visions of ancient times, he doubts his sanity.

Across the ocean, Shallan trains under eminent scholar and notorious heretic, Dalinar’s niece Jasnah. Though Shallan genuinely loves learning, she plans a daring theft. Her research hints at secrets of the Knights Radiant and the true cause of the war.

Lanette (locallan) | 19 comments Bet you're wondering if I can come up with anyone other than Brandon Sanderson? And yes I can, I really enjoyed Brian McClellan's Powder Mage Trilogy + assorted Novellas. Of course, he was a student of Brandon Sanderson and he recommended Brian McClellan, which is how I initially found him:

The Age of Kings is dead . . . and I have killed it.

It's a bloody business overthrowing a king...
Field Marshal Tamas' coup against his king sent corrupt aristocrats to the guillotine and brought bread to the starving. But it also provoked war with the Nine Nations, internal attacks by royalist fanatics, and the greedy to scramble for money and power by Tamas's supposed allies: the Church, workers unions, and mercenary forces.

Stretched to his limit, Tamas is relying heavily on his few remaining powder mages, including the embittered Taniel, a brilliant marksman who also happens to be his estranged son, and Adamat, a retired police inspector whose loyalty is being tested by blackmail.

But when gods are involved...
Now, as attacks batter them from within and without, the credulous are whispering about omens of death and destruction. Just old peasant legends about the gods waking to walk the earth. No modern educated man believes that sort of thing. But they should...

Wondering Sight (The Extraordinaries #2) by Melissa McShane Wondering Sight by Melissa McShane

Sophia Westlake is an Extraordinary Seer, gifted with the ability to see past, present and future in Dreams and Visions. Her talent led to the destruction of the Caribbean pirates plaguing England’s shipping and gained her renown and the accolades of her peers. But when she accuses a prominent politician, Lord Endicott, of embezzling from the Army, her Dream is “proved” false and she is disgraced, her reputation ruined and her career in the Army’s War Office over.

Humiliated, Sophia returns to London, but Lord Endicott follows her, intent on making her life increasingly miserable. Furious and desperate, Sophia takes the only course left to her: she sets out to discover Lord Endicott’s criminal enterprises, to expose him as the fraud he is and bring him to justice.

Sophia’s allies are few, but loyal. Cecy, her best friend, supports Sophia in her quest, while her cousin Lady Daphne, an irrepressible Extraordinary Bounder, is always ready for a challenge that will strike at Lord Endicott’s heart. And always watching her is the mysterious Mr. Rutledge, who claims to be interested in Sophia’s friendship—and possibly more than that—but who has an agenda of his own.

But as Sophia delves deeper into prophetic Dreams, Cecy and Daphne begin to fear for Sophia’s health and sanity. Driven to collapse by her frequent Dreaming, Sophia is forced to reevaluate her motives: does she want Lord Endicott brought to justice, or is it revenge she seeks? As Sophia draws closer to the secret of Lord Endicott’s criminal enterprise, a counterfeiting ring, his torment of Sophia increases, until the two are bound together by their respective obsessions. Though Sophia insists she is in control, her friends fear she is turning into the man she most hates.

Sophia’s Dreams and Visions are leading her to just one place: the destruction of Lord Endicott. But the cost of her vengeance may be too high—and may demand the sacrifice of her own life.

Wolf's Pawn (Sajani Tails Book 1) by Chaaya Chandra Wolf's Pawn by Chaaya Chandra

Twenty-five hundred years ago, two human armies marched into the jungle to claim a mineral rich area. On the dawn of the day that was to be their first meeting in battle, both sides awoke from a magical sleep that transformed them into wolf-folk. The two sides fled the area and attempted to return to their own countries, only to be rejected by their kin and forced to flee back to the jungle.

Since that time, the wolf-like vykati of the world of Terah have endured the fear and superstition of the human lands around them, including many attempts at exterminating them completely. Their current leader, Benayle Ramisa, wants to change that as does the daughter of a national hero, Sajani Adida. It’s not an easy task, as the animosity between the races is mutual.

When elves invade the Eastern Continent and quickly conquer the strong human nation of Zenache, Sajani resigns her post as Minister of War to become a privateer, while Benayle opens new diplomatic ties and attempts to forge alliances. Erstwhile enemies slowly and hesitantly begin to come together to face the new threat. The elves, however, appear unstoppable, with a technology level much higher than the natives. Fighting them will take something other than military power: it will take the patience and cunning of a wolf and the filial strength and coordination of the pack.

The odds are not in their favor.

Can a reluctant and manipulative leader and a rising pirate queen succeed against the elven juggernaut, when so many nations have failed?
