Caliban's War

On to Book Two of the Expanse! I read this one in the last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. Looking forward to hearing what other people thought.

Mickey | 623 comments I read it last year and I also enjoyed it. I also read book 3 and will start on book 4 next month since I am a slow reader.

Lena 37% in. I'm loving Chrisjen, powerful potty mouth powerhouse. I am also liking the new Holden, even if he doesn't.

LindaJ^ (lindajs) | 260 comments Just finished and I liked it. Chrisjen is a good addition, as is Bobby and Pav (sp? - I listened to audio, so not sure how its spelled!). I'm still not too crazy about Holden but he's starting to get better, now that he's not so self-righteous. Amos and Alex are good characters. Glad to get some backstory on Amos. Nice parody on how politics work.

Mickey | 623 comments I like the character Holden. This is typical in a small group where nobody wants to be the boss. The other characters are specialists, Alex is a pilot, Naomi is an engineer and Amos is the security specialist. So what is Holden's specialty... The boss (management?).

Structure of characters are similar in several science fiction novels.

Again I like the Holden character, a person who is in charge, but unfolding events keeps forcing his hand. Wants to do what is right by helping others, but has a hard time doing so. I find the other characters as self centered and just wants to do their job in which they were trained.

Well, I think you are a bit too kind to Holden! He does want to be boss, as shown how he is dismayed when his companions "vote" to do something other than what he wants! And, for him, right is what he thinks is right -- he has a really hard time hearing anyone else's opinions. True that the others (other than Crisjen) don't want to be boss and can't blame them! They have their strengths, though, they are not one-dimensional but pretty well-developed.

Lena Holden is also leader because he can keep his cool in a firefight and can talk himself out of problems. Still, he is a righteous SOB and my favorite part was Fred taking him apart - he had that coming!

Ruth | 70 comments I'm about half way through this and so far am really liking it. I also like Crisjen character, maybe because I'm also a potty mouth old lady. Iol. I also like Amos. Holden, I think jumps to conclusions without thinking it through and sometimes that doesn't work out so well.

I work with the elderly and it is always the feisty ones who are my favorites. :)

Ruth | 70 comments So true Sara. I finished the book and am waiting for the 3rd and 4th from the library. while I 'm waiting I'm reading Secondhand Souls by Christopher Moore because I need a good laugh and he always delivers one.
