Jennifer Pope (jenjunum) | 902 comments So Charlie's wife dies during child birth and in that process he becomes Death's Merchant. He's charged with collecting souls after people die and redistributing them to soul-less individuals. Mess up and the chaotic dark underworld starts to take over. Did I mention this a comedy?

I know Christopher Moore has a kind of fan club. I think I kind of get the appeal. He says f*ck a lot. I can appreciate that, but after a while it loses it's effect. I prefer a well-timed swear personally.

I get that he's funny and silly and I got the punch line, it just wasn't that original to me. Asians eat "weird" foods, black men dress in brightly colored suits, men are very interested in boob... A few times Moore did something really clever with a plot or a joke but more often he chose the obvious one right in front of you.

Also, I hate the cover art.

LibraryCin | 11697 comments Oh no!!!! :-(

This is one of my favourites by him (of the few I've read). Not sure if it has to do with the fact that I listened on audio or not.

Sorry you didn't enjoy it.

Haha, I've thought about reading Moore quite a few times, but never have because of the cover art!

Megalion | 484 comments I've not read it but I agree with you Jennifer about swearing should be used in moderation.

People do swear all the time and it definitely affects my opinion of them. Well used swears do to but upwards, particularly if clever.

Your thoughts make me cautious but I'm still wanting to read a C.Moore book at some point. Maybe not this one.

Leah K (uberbutter) | 90 comments He seems to be a hit or miss with people. I haven't read this one but in general I'm a Moore fan (Lamb being my favorite).

Jennifer Pope (jenjunum) | 902 comments I get the joke and a couple of times they were really clever. I think Moore is likely pretty smart but it was just too much. And I actually swear quite a bit myself so I have nothing against it! But I swear for effect. I know Lamb is his most well-known. Maybe audio is worth a try? Someone in my book club was even more offended by the racist jokes in the audiobook because they also came with racist accents...

~*Kim*~ (greenclovers75) He certainly does have a different type of writing. I first read The Stupidest Angel by him and really enjoyed that. This one was the 2nd one I read and enjoyed it, however there have been a couple of his books that I just couldn't get in to. I do have The Serpent of Venice to read, so hopefully I like that one. I do want to read the sequel to this one, Secondhand Souls.
