Laura-Lee (lauraleewashere) | 3 comments I've just joined this group so I thought I would stop in to say "hello" and also to ask you a favour.

I put myself down for the Book Challenge of 2016 and pledged to read 12 books in 2016. I'm having "difficulties" in my life right now and I wanted to have an amount of books I thought I could easily reach and also be encouraged by the lives of 12 Christian men and women so I want the books in my "pledge" to be Christian biographies.

With those goals in mind, I'm hoping you can recommend any Christian biography that you feel is a "MUST READ" (and perhaps a few comments about why you liked the book (s) so much).

And while you are at my profile page, why don't you click on the "friends" button and I would be happy to respond.? (I am often slow in getting back to people, so please, don't take it personally,!)

I'm happy to be in this group and I'm looking forward to reading more things from you, it's members.

Sincerely, Laura-Lee (Rahn)

Brit Bonhoeffer by Eric Mataxas
Confessions by St. Augustine

Mike Beranek (mikeberanek) | 2 comments hello. I can whole-heartedly second that vote for :
Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy

Its a little chunky in size but the prose is nice and it reads pretty much like a novel and it is sympathetic without being sycophantic about this incredible man faced with impossible choices but always fired by the Holy Sprit.

Gordon Paisley | 7 comments I heartily echo Brit's and Mike's suggestions.

Eric Metaxas has also written a biography of William Wilberforce, called "Amazing Grace" that is on my to-read list. He also has two collections of shorter biographies called 7 Men and the Secret of their Greatness and 7 Women and the Secret of their Greatness. I have read the first and am on the third bio in the second--they are excellent. I have learned a lot about some of these great heroes of the faith. If you want something a little shorter and more bite-sized, these would be a great choice.

Harriet Johnston | 1 comments Two titles I recommend are:
1) John Newton by Jonathan Aitken
2) American Saint by John Wigger

I enjoyed both of them and learned a lot about both Newton and Francis Asbury

Laura-Lee (lauraleewashere) | 3 comments Nice. I haven't heard of either, Harriet. Thanks for the recommendations. L-L

Laura-Lee (lauraleewashere) | 3 comments I've been involved in a lot of Bereavement, so I was wondering if there were some Biography Recommendations that are both inspirational but with someone who had a good sense of humor too. The only one I can think of is "God's Smuggler" (Brother Andrew).

Anyone have any other recommendations that might involve some chuckles?
Just wondering.

Rod Horncastle I haven't read many Christian Biographies. But
Joni Eareckson-Tada
John MacArthur
Amy Carmichael
Billy Graham
John Wesley
Charles Spurgeon
Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Ravi Zacharias
Nabeel Qureshi

The trickiest part is finding these books, and looking at your budget. Our Christian Bookstore has a used section (so that narrow it down)

My favorite life stories are those who came from other religions to Christianity - or from troubled homes. I read a lot of book by X-Mormons, X-Muslims, X-cult members, X-Catholics, X-charismatics, X-terrorists.
