Joan The research was exhaustive and I have a new appreciation for the belief system of the time period. But I had to stop reading when I reached the point at which the ship sinks and the men go on foot into the wilderness. I knew what would probably happen and I could not read any more of their desperate days. They were brave and heroic to do what they did, but also a bit foolhardy.

Anthony Meaney Read:
Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage

Similar situation but with a much less bleak outcome.

Sally Atwell Williams I liked this book, in spite of it being a rather heavy read. The author did his research when he wrote the book it was like reading a novel. This is how I like to read non-fiction novels. Not cut and dried, but bringing the reader into the scene. And I was amazed that anyone came home.

Patricia I really liked this book by Hampton Sides and also his book "Ghost Soldiers". Both were very well researched. Both were heavy reads but I have learned so much from his books, I also enjoyed "In the Heart of the Sea" by Philbrick, and many of the books written by Erik Larson and John Krakhauer.

Emmett Hoops This book is one that I will never forget. I've recommended it to more people than any other book -- with the exception of The Power Broker (by Robert Caro.) Kingdom of Ice is so perfectly, so effectively written that it was difficult to read in parts. The unbelievably courageous, if crazy, people who endured such things: does anyone like this still exist?

The greatest true story of survival I have ever read.

Melville, he had the best boat for the conditions and best plan, and as luck would have it, he made landfall in a good place. he is a true survivor and hero for returning to find them.
