pisang - Florian | 66 comments I'm jealous at the bookshelf of some folks here. I love to read, but I don't do it so often as I want to (Like most people). I read 30 min or less in the bus to work and maybe 30 min before bedtime (any longer and I fall asleep). So I am curious. What are your reading habits? Do you force yourself to read, are u making time? Or perhaps is it an addiction? And what is your average reading time?

PS: Setting a reading goal and joining this group already boosted my stats :-)

Mark | 113 comments I read on the bus to work, which can be over a hour each way, read in bed the bath and in front of the tv.

I read on the bus too. And before bed. And in the afternoons if I'm not busy. Its definitely an addiction! If a book really grabs me I will easily stay up till 2 in the morning. Who needs sleep anyway?

I just about always read at least 30 minutes when I go to bed. Recently I was down with bronchitis and tore through several books in a short span. When things are slow at work or I'm running very long queries and such, I'll also at times pull up an ebook to read. Another of my places to read is waiting for my wife or boys in a parking lot. I'm not much of a shopper and prefer to stay in the car.

In other words, I read about anywhere.

Additionally, I use Moonreader Pro for my ebooks (which is about all I read) and it is able to sync between my tablet and phone with Dropbox. I know Kindle can also sync, but I just prefer Moonreader's features.

Mel | 88 comments I read on the train to and from work. I also read a little bit in bed before I sleep, while the cats settle down on which part of my body or the bed that are claiming for the night. But sometimes, when the book is very good I will read all day and night till I finish it :-)

message 7: by Reon (new)

Reon I read every day for at least an hour, to school/work and I used to read about 4 days a week in the evening for 1-2 hours. But the last couple of months my thesis has been cutting into my reading time :(

message 8: by Jenna (new)

Jenna Kathleen (jennakathleen) | 77 comments I read on the bus as well (30min one way and when I go to Toronto on weekends sometimes, it's 2 hours one way), but when I'm really enjoying a book I'll read it at home - which happens quite often. I also read a lot more when I go to my parents' house, mostly because the internet is horrible. I add books I read for school too which I know some people don't do.

A lot of us bus readers, it seems. My bus ride is about 35-40 minutes in morning and an hour in afternoon (traffic). I read in that time.

I sometimes read at home in evenings or on weekends if there aren't things to do.

Last year I had a herniated disc in my back and was off work for 3 months unable to do much of anything. That's what really got me back into reading in the first place. I read a LOT in that time I was off work.

pisang - Florian | 66 comments Nice to see alot of habits are the same. Like Chris said, alot of bus readers! Thanks

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) I read when I get a chance - at lunch at work, usually at home depending on schedule. Some nights I have a lot of time and can read for hours. Other nights it may be a quick read while in the bath.

I'm fortunate to have a lot of time to read this year, so I bumped up my goal and reading plans.

I drive a car to work so reading during transportation isn't possible ...err, safe.

Once upon a time I tried reading in the bath. It was not a pleasant experience. I'm not a bath person, but I'd heard it was relaxing to take a bath and read.

I found myself getting pages wet when turning them and constantly worrying about the book.

I'll happily stick to quick showers and reading in a chair.

message 13: by Koen (new)

Koen | 4 comments Haha yeah Chompa, I totally agree!! Wouldn't want to get a soaked book now do we..
I prefer in a nice relaxing chair.. Perhaps even a little soft LP playing in the back ground.. and to top it off, a nice dram of Single Malt whisky..
Best-evening-ever! :)

message 14: by Silvana (last edited Apr 15, 2016 09:20AM) (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) I mostly read before I sleep. Either via Kindle or audiobook with my iPod. Often ended up not sleeping if the story is too good and feel mightily sleepy in the morning.

I read with my Kindle while sitting in a cafe or eating in a restaurant alone. Not often, though, usually while waiting for friends to arrive.

I listen to audiobook while using Uber. It takes an hour or so during work days.

During weekend, I spend at least half a day cooped up in my room and read.

Jenna Kathleen (jennakathleen) | 77 comments I have a feeling reading in the bath would be a disaster for me. I love the idea in theory - a book in one hand, a wine glass in the other, and candles sporadically placed around the tub. In reality, somehow I would manage to spill the wine all over the book and into the tub, and while I panic and attempt to fix the problem, I would somehow burn my book and possibly burn down the house. The last part may be a bit overexaggerated, but it's really not that much of a stretch. Even if I took the candles and wine out of the equation, the book would definitely end up in the water.

Hahahaaa

I just have this image if you shivering outside the smouldering inferno that was your house in wrapped in a towel. "Well you see Mr Fireman, it all started when I decided to read in the tub..."

Yep, that's me. Only because I am mainly reading on my kindle these, I would also manage to somehow electrocute myself too.

Yep! This sounds much better and potentially (because I have the utmost faith I can bring disaster with the most innocuous of activities) less dangerous than the bath :-)
Only instead of the soft LP, I would get a soft purring, because the cats never want to miss out on the reading fun.

I wouldn't risk going near the bath when reading, my books are too precious!

Jenna Kathleen (jennakathleen) | 77 comments Tracey (running, flying, kicking %$*£ slap) wrote: "I wouldn't risk going near the bath when reading, my books are too precious!"

I could not agree more! I'm careful not to break the spines of my books or fold the pages - it's too risky to put my books that close to water when I go through all that effort to keep them nice.

message 23: by JuJu (new)

JuJu | 5 comments I tried reading in my tub once too... After about 5 minutes I decided that it isn't worth risking the book and I put it away... I don't know what's supposed to be relaxing about that. I constantly worried about letting my book fall into the water...

I read while having breakfast every day (: It's a habit of me and one of my roommates to have breakfast together, both reading. (:

When I leave my house I ALWAYS take a book with me, no matter where I'm going, so I can read while waiting for something or someone.
Like many others here I also read on the bus (to university and back).
Depending on how much free time I have a day, I also like to read in the afternoon or before I go to sleep.

message 24: by Silvana (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) For reading in the bath or near any body of water (beach etc) you could always use a waterproof case for your Kindle. I've one to read in boats during sea trips to avoid getting splashes. Way too clunky though, still looking for a thinner one.

JuJu, I share your sentiment about always having a book with me. With today's technology though, it is having it on my phone, which means I carry a bunch of books with me. And since I store even more in Dropbox, it means easy access to a small library.

If I know I'm going to be reading while out, I will usually take my tablet as that is easier to read with my old eyes.

Well my phone is way to small to read on and I don't like reading on a tablet or e-book... I prefer to have a real book in my hands. (:

I respect that. My wife is the same way. Most people are ebook or real book.

Being a student you probably also have a backpack or something you carry, which makes it a bit easier too.

JuJu | 5 comments Chompa wrote: "Being a student you probably also have a backpack or something you carry, which makes it a bit easier too. "

Yeah, being a student and a woman I always carry some kind of bag with me.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) You guys are having me giggling about the bath-book scenarios lol

It doesn't bother me - I rarely get any water on the books and read with both hands in the bath, books safe and in no danger. I guess it depends on different things like the shape of the bathtub or just holding book habits.

message 30: by Dan (last edited Apr 18, 2016 08:03AM) (new)

Dan (TheGreatBeast) | 28 comments I read on the bus to and from work, and normally 10-15 minutes when I get to work before starting my day (I arrive a bit early). I also read for about 20 minutes in the morning after a quick workout and I sometimes read before bed and finish off a chapter when I get off the bus and arrive at home. On average I'd guess I read about an hour and a half, sometimes more, every week day, but rarely read more than a few pages to myself on weekends. Though my girlfriend and I do read out loud to each other while cooking and doing chores, so sometimes I put a decent dent in our communal book reading over the weekend.

The reading aloud while doing chores is a great idea - too bad my boyfriend hates reading in English..

message 32: by Ojo (new)

Ojo (elawnika) | 9 comments I read when I'm at rest, usually when I'm lying in bed. I cannot read in noisy places or in class. I greatly enjoy reading while eating. It makes both the story and the food more tantalising. I read only ebooks, I don't fancy paperback much. I also use a variety of Android ebook readers: each gives me a different reading experience.

message 33: by Heather (new)

Heather (bruyere) I, too, don't have much time to actually sit down to read. I read ebooks for a few minutes before bed, and during my lunch break. Otherwise, I listen to audio books at the gym, doing chores, and driving to/from work. I think my average per week would be 2 hours per day. I listen to my audio books using iPod and bluetooth headphones. Those headphones have made a huge difference in gym use and at home. Don't have to worry about catching the cord on everything.

Scott Hitchcock (lostinthewarrenofchaos) | 89 comments I generally have two books going at a time. One on the kindle and one audio book on the phone. The audio books are on while I commute and often when I stretch before working out. The kindle whenever I can find the time.

message 37: by Dan (last edited Apr 25, 2016 12:47PM) (new)

Dan (TheGreatBeast) | 28 comments I normally have 2 or 3 books going at a time, one that I read at home, one for my commute by bus and one that I read with my girlfriend. No e-reader for me though. Almost always paperbacks on my commute and normally a hard cover at home.

message 38: by Christopher (last edited Apr 25, 2016 09:02PM) (new)

Christopher (esqinc) I read on my commute each day which is around an hour and a half each way. I also read during smoke breaks at work and for at least an hour or so before going to sleep. All together I probably read upwards of five or six hours per day.
