Jonathan | 17 comments Just wondering (ha!) if anyone has read Dawn of Wonder by Jonathan Renshaw. If so, thoughts?

Best,
Jonathan

Scott Hitchcock (lostinthewarrenofchaos) | 443 comments I'm halfway through. Without giving any plot away I'll say to this point there's only hints of it really being a fantasy book. All of the locations, nations, cities, etc are made up however there only hints of potential magic including an abandoned city and something the main character things he hears and feels.

It's very well written but to this point it's purely a coming of age story which I don't mind as long there's a payoff. I'm hoping the second half more develops.

I should point out I in general like the YA fantasy genre since I read a lot of it with my daughters and I also read like a lot of historical fiction with no magic at all that's set in this type of setting such as The Last Kingdom which I just read and loved.

Maybe somebody else can chime in on the second half but I'd say if you like a well written coming of age read it but if you're looking for more fantasy in your read probably skip it. I'm still hopeful it comes alive in that aspect in the second half.

Jonathan | 17 comments Thanks, Scott! How's the second half of the novel going? I'm very intrigued by the reviews I've read on goodreads and elsewhere.

Scott Hitchcock (lostinthewarrenofchaos) | 443 comments Three-quarters of the way done. Definitely a good book. Still not a lot of fantasy components but I have to think the last quarter will have a lot.

Sterling (sterlingf) | 20 comments I finished reading this book a few weeks ago. It was one of the best books I have read. I loved it and I can't wait for book 2 to come out. It really is a great coming of age story. It really reminded me of The Name of the Wind and the Riyria Chronicles. I highly recommend it.

Daniel Millard Thanks for the reviews. This looks very interesting. Marked as to-read. :)

I love Riyeria but I find Name of the Wind vastly overrated and think Dawn of Wonder was much better. I don't think there's a time table for book two yet sadly.

Sterling (sterlingf) | 20 comments Scott, I read The Name of the Wind before their was any hype so I wasn't expecting anything and I really liked it. I have to say that Michael J Sullivan's Riyria books are so great. Royce and Haydrian are two of my favorite characters ever.
As far as book two goes I think it is going to be some time, he is still working on the first draft from what I have read, so it seems it will be at least another year or more. I hope it comes out soon but I would rather wait until he thinks it is ready. I will probably re read Dawn of Wonder before book two comes out. Maybe a couple times. It was so good.

I'll definitely re-read it when the other one comes out.

Royce and Hadrian are awesome.
