While I liked her Waldenesque view of solitude, the depression and angst that permeated the pages rather disturbed me. Thankfully, due to my library ILL issues, I read this book before Malcolm X; reversed, I think I would have enjoyed it less. Sarton has some very insightful things to say, but very little sense of joy ever leapt off the pages. In fact, she said she was trying to correct the rose-coloured view of herself from one of her other books. I would say she certainly was successful.
