Mandie Hill For the third installment to the Twilight Saga, the books begins with the readers learning that Seattle has been battling an issue dealing with multiple unsolved murders continuing to take place. After thinking it through, Edward and his family believe that the murders are being caused by newly transformed vampires that cannot control their thirst for blood. As Edward and Bella start applying to colleges, Bella cannot deny the fact that she misses friend Jacob. After Edward came back into her life, the relationship she had with Jacob began to disappear due to the conflict between vampires and werewolves. Edward does not support her seeing Jacob as he fears for her safety. When Alice has a vision that Victoria, a vampire who wants to kill Bella for revenge, is back, an agreement is made that Bella will stay with Jacob as he lives on territory that vampires cannot cross. As Victoria begins to create an army of new thirsty vampires, the Cullen’s put their differences aside with the werewolves and join forces to defeat the army. Before the battle begins, Edward asks for Bella to marry him and she accepts his proposal. When Jacob learns of the engagement, he becomes overwhelmingly upset and plans to get himself killed by the vampire army. In order to stop Jacob from doing this, Bella kisses him making Jacob realize she loves him. When the battle begins, Edward and Bella hide from Victoria and her army. When Victoria tracks down Edward’s scent and finds them, Edward is forced to fight and kill Victoria. When the battle comes to an end, Bella explains to Jacob that although she loves him, she loves Edward more. When Jacob receives their wedding invitation, he runs away with anger as he realizes that Bella wants to become a vampire.

Eclipse introduces more characters into the story, especially those who are vampires. You begin to see less of Bella's friends from high school and more on the Cullen family as well as Jacob and his werewolf clan.

I felt that Stephanie Meyer did a great job at making the tension between Edward and Jacob very obvious throughout the book. From the constant fighting over Bella to the hatred they have against each other, it can easily be seen that the two are not fond of each other. Conflict between the feelings Bella has for both Jacob and Edward is made clear to the reader as well. Once Bella kisses Jacob, she finally admits that she does love him just not as much as Edward. Bella and Jacob’s friendship begins to break again towards the end of the novel as Jacob realizes Bella will never love him the way that he loves her.
