I haven't read a hard copy book since a year and the credit goes to kindle.

It is not better.Nothing gives more pleasure than reading on hard white paper in a silent environment.But kindle offers us the benefict of reading anywhere anytime and so I would say it is almost the same.Earlier I used to sulk at kindle but now reading a book on kindle app, I'am realising its worth.

Yeah it is and things are transforming too much I think reading on screen is going to be vital everywhere. Kindle or other Android app has been of great help it saves time as well as we can download any book.

I'm a big fan of Kindle and it has helped increase my reading speed over the past couple of years. I always carry the kindle in my pocket.. and read whenever in a queue or wherever I can.

Having said that, I'd still prefer a hardcopy book over Kindle in most cases!

Kindle sure provides the mobility and ease of movement. I have got kindle and keep reading stuff on it. And you can easily carry a large number of big books on it .
But i surely enjoy reading a hard copy of a book more. It's an experience. The turning of the pages. The sweet smell that emanates from an old book is an experience in itself and i often find myself smelling the pages.( I know it may sound weird.) There are time when i've read a deep quote or a beautiful paragraph and at that time i like to close the book for a bit and caress it's spine. It's an automatic response. I think in kindle these experiences are missing. I kind of feel detached when i read on it. I think these are reasons why studies have shown this:

Sometimes I do like read my Kindle in a library, or a bookstore. Saw somewhere on goodreads before and found very apt :


Books and Kindle shouldn't be compared against. They complement each other.

By the way, anybody else notice the revamped Kindle UI?

Amazon's cunning UI. Looks great... feels great... but the home page tempts you time and again about your want to read shelf and hence impulsive buying of more books!

I used to read a lot from torrents in my college days. But i've stopped since i've started earning. I try to pay for the books. Hindi writers are already underpaid and so are many new writers.
If the book is very costly i try to buy kindle edition. For eg: i bought the Thieves fall out by Gore vidal for 49 rs on kindle while the paperback version would have cost me more than 500 rs. There are many books whose kindle versions are ridiculously low. i try to grab these titles.

No i'm not. But i have read about may writers especially in hindi who wrote so much good literature but had to live their lives in penury. It's sometimes amazing that they kept writing when they were so underpaid. So i try to make my contribution by buying the original books and it doesn't costs much.
If you can read hindi, you should read this essay by the great satirist Harishankar parsai ji called 'Premchand ke fate joote' loosely translated as Premchand's torn shoes.

When you think of hindi writing the first name that comes to mind is premchand. He wrote indian society in a way that no one could.The picture in the first link is what prompted parsai ji to write that peice. And the picture says all. Any ways it may be too sentimental of me. But well, what's life without sentiments.

Thanks for the links. I am highly fond of hindi writers and in my hindi book there were many short stories and poems, one of my favourite writer is obviously premchand, nagarjuna, mira bai and many... I still remember the style of their writing. You know for me the best thing is that the reader gets to feel the Indian society deeply and it becomes kind of emotional attachment at the end of the story! It's beautiful actually.

I don't want to be a "Smart Alec" here advising about piracy. But here are my 2 cents. I thank piracy for that's one of the major reasons that got me started to reading. And like Vikas said, due to affordability in college days, never purchased a single book.

Now that I'm earning, and with kindle in hand, things have changed and I started buying lots of them. Still don't spend like a millionaire spend thrift on books. But I do try to grab the "value for money" books.

So in that way, personally for me the Kindle UI is tempting for impulsive buying... in spite of the torrents!
To each his own.
