Tracy (cornerfolds) This is the place to discuss this month's group read!

This horrifying thriller, partly based on a true story, is the scariest novel yet from an international bestseller.

The crunching noise had resumed, now accompanied by a disgusting, indefinable smell. It could best be described as a blend of kelp and rotten meat. The voice spoke again, now slightly louder and clearer:

Don't go. Don't go yet. I'm not finished.

In an isolated village in the Icelandic Westfjords, three friends set to work renovating a derelict house. But soon they realise they are not alone there - something wants them to leave, and it's making its presence felt.

Meanwhile, in a town across the fjord, a young doctor investigating the suicide of an elderly woman discovers that she was obsessed with his vanished son.

When the two stories collide the terrifying truth is uncovered . . .

Let's discuss!

Latasha (latasha513) 15% in, they just made the discovery in the garden.

Eva Almost half way through: it's a bit slow at times, but I think the scenes where people are wondering (view spoiler)

Empress Reece (Hooked on Books) (empressreece) Im on page 123. Just finished the scenes with the beer cans. It hasn't been really scary to me but that part was kind of creepy. Maybe I'm not far enough into it yet. It is slow to me too though.

Eva Just finished it and thought it was ok. Definitely too slow, but with a few nice ghost scenes. Didn't think the ending was too original and too many things were all explained by just assuming that it must have been the ghosts doing ghostly things.

Empress Reece (Hooked on Books) (empressreece) I'm sorry you didn't like it that much. So far it's not really what I was expecting or hoping for either. I haven't picked it back up yet but I'm going to try and finish it this weekend.

Latasha (latasha513) uh oh! that's not good to hear. if I don't finish before my loan expires i'll just give it up.

Latasha (latasha513) I didn't get to finish. when are the threads for June going up?

Empress Reece (Hooked on Books) (empressreece) Im on Chapter 14. I thought Chapter 11 was really good- the best one yet imo. It was pretty creepy!

message 12: by Eva (new)

Eva Yes, I think some of the creepy scenes were actually well done!! It's a couple of weeks ago since I finished the book and I think now that the constant cliffhangers of the two parallel storylines were actually what slowed each story down a lot. As soon as something happens in one chapter, the chapter ends and we have to read the other story. And when we get back to the first story it doesn't necessarily pick up where we left. So the most exciting things happen when the reader is "absent".

Spook (spookyspoo) I just started. The first chapter wasn't all that engaging. I hope it improves...

I just finished chapter 13 and I absolutely agree: chapter 11 was the best one so far. It's a nice story; I just wish it had been written with more showing and less telling to build up a scary atmosphere. I'll keep reading...
