David I listened to all of this, bar the final 7 minutes when out walking at lunchtime today. Recommended.

Oh. That does sound interesting. I can imagine that Tess must have been tremendously controversial when it was written. I'm looking forward to the group reading Tess as I've only seen the movie version (which is what turned me on to Hardy in the first place).

David Every day's a school day, Amy and I found out about the manuscript being turned down by two publishers due to its immorality, and the third accepted it, but did describe it as 'succulent'!

The three academics discussing Tess (the character as well as the book) are very knowledgeable and speak in non-technical terms, giving new insights to a gigantic, influential novel.

David I'm glad you enjoyed it Iosephus. If our governments continue their attacks on the BBC, this is just the sort of excellent output that could be lost.

This podcast is still available, for all who would like to listen! Thanks David for finding it :) Now we have had our group read of Tess of the D’Urbervilles, it should make very interesting listening.

Darrin (darrinlettinga) I am now starting phase the fourth but will look forward to listening to this when I am done.

Hi Darrin - great to see you posting again! Do add your thoughts to the Third Phase discussion, if you like. (The Second is in the same thread.) You're making great progress and we'd love to hear your thoughts so far :) Here it is!
