Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ (mckennamuse) | 224 comments I've wanted to give this series a try for ages! June looks pretty crazy, but unless something major comes up, I'll be here sometime during that first week to join in the fun! : )

message 2: by MadameZelda (new)

MadameZelda I've only read book 1 and need motivation like this group read to continue.

Thanks Vilda...and Armi!

I checked with my library and they have most of the series on audio and available for download through Overdrive!

*pause for the happy dance*

Wait for it....

Nichole | 1199 comments Hmm, I might end up joining in on this! I loved the first several books. I stopped at Affliction but this might be just what I need to get over my issues :) Remembering the good stuff!

I'm the same way I have both Jason and Dead Ice but I am afraid to read Jason because I don't want it to be basically just like the book Micah except with Jason I really miss the beginning books before it was all about the sex and powers.

message 13: by Nichole (new)

Nichole | 1199 comments I always kind of liked her animator jobs. But then she just kind of quit doing those. Someone told me something about her latest novel that makes me want to (at some point) read them.

"Be forewarned that Jason, #23 doesn't have much plot and pretty much all takes place in one room over a day or so. I'm not sure why it got a full number and wasn't an in between novel. Dead Ice (#24) kind of makes me forgive her for that one thought. As far as the series goes, I have also not been enjoying them as much lately, however #24 that came out earlier this year is a lot more like the early books (she actually is an animator again for part of the book)."

I do have an Anita gif! So we always knew that Anita had big boobs, but did you realize how big?? I sure didn't until I read it in Affliction. Now remember, Anita is very petite...

bouncing boobs photo: Bouncing Boobs! hentailol.gif

She wears a Triple E size bra... and that my friends, is what finally did me in, LOL. I put the book down and haven't picked it back up. But then if she starts going back to her animating, I'd like to eventually read those!

message 14: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2200 comments Gosh.. that is... big! I mean, sure it exists, but then usually people come with a few extra pounds elsewhere as well, which doesn't seem to be the case for Anita.

Anyway, who is going to start the first book tomorrow??

Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ (mckennamuse) | 224 comments Holy bouncing boobage!

We all know that's fantasy. No way would a real woman smile when boobs that size are roughly bounced around. Draw a severe grimace of agony on her face and "TA-DA!" Reality. ; )

I'm ready to start tomorrow! This will be my first read of the series and no, I haven't been living in a box, just busy raising kids. It'll be fun knowing nothing and having peeps around that can answer questions!

I have heard that the series turned into (almost?) erotica after about 10 books or so, but I wanted to give those first few books a shot.

message 16: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2200 comments That's basically it, yes, Becky.
The first ones are really great though. When I first read it, I loved the fact that there was a lot of sexual tension but no insta-love and instant bed-hopping.

Beware though when you start that you're thrown right into the story. The main characters have quite a bit of history together already before the starting point of the book.

Thank you! I'm looking forward to going as far into the series as I can with all of you. I don't handle erotica very well...I get bored really fast. It's probably bibliophilian menopause. ; )

message 18: by JennyWren (new)

JennyWren (guinivere87) | 174 comments That gif haha :D

I stopped reading after Blood Noir (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #16) by Laurell K. Hamilton which is number 16 in the series. Too much sex and way too many scenes with power plays. I love rereading 1-10 though :)

Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ (mckennamuse) | 224 comments Thanks, Vilda!

It will be fun! We'll see how far I can keep going! LOL! I enjoy hearing everyone's thoughts and opinions, too, In the past, I've made the best friends and learned the most from those who feel differently about a book, genre, or scene. I bet we'll discover a lot in common and have some great conversations! : )

message 20: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2200 comments I sure hope so!! :-)
I love a good conversation about a book (or books, really... hehe).

Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ (mckennamuse) | 224 comments LOL! Is there anything else worth talking about? Well, don't get me started on kids, or my grand babies, and really don't mention horses or parades. Talk about a major thread hijack.

message 22: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2200 comments Horses... *happy sigh*

Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ (mckennamuse) | 224 comments Everybody should own at least one. I think stress would be at an all time low,

message 24: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2200 comments I can't deny that would be awesome :-)
It's been soooo long since I've been close to a horse, far too long.

Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ (mckennamuse) | 224 comments I end up smelling like them by the end of "almost" every day. It all depends on my health condition. My husband cares for them on days when I have a flare up. When I don't get out to the barn to brush them out or work them I miss it like crazy. They are the reason I'm again walking unassisted or in a wheelchair way before my time.

I love this series and enjoyed the later books also.

Eldarwen | 2200 comments Welcome, Danielle! :-)

Becky, that is awesome! They're definitely a very good reason to push yourself to get better. I'm glad to hear they're helping you :-) How many do you own? Sounds like they're are at least two? And what kind?? ^^

(EDA because I'm disappearing in the middle of a convo: heading to bed, it's midnight o.O Didn't see the time pass!)

Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ (mckennamuse) | 224 comments I have two...a big solid black Appaloosa and a flea-bitten grey Thoroughbred, both mares. I've had my Appy since she was 14, she's 26 now and is enjoying her retirement. My son rode her as a drill horse from the time he was 13 and earned two National Championship titles on her with his drill team. We made lots of memories together making the trip down to Tyler, Texas for the competitions. At the time, his horse (the Thoroughbred) was only 18 months old. Now he's busy being a young adult and I'm taking his horse to ride, LOL!

We've done everything with our horses. Trail rides, campouts, rodeos, parades (small towns and big city), and while I can't ride hard all the time, I did go to his rodeo performances and ride Grand Entry, then watch while he performed drill with the rest of the team. It was a lot of fun. I miss it and have hopes that my grandson will take an interest. He's walking now so it won't be long and he's going to a buddy seat and a helmet to ride with grandma!

✿~Danielle~✿ (dmh1) Hello Becky :)

message 31: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2200 comments A solid black Appaloosa?! I didn't realise they actually come without spots o.O
Quite a lovely age for a horse though and definitely sounds like she was and is leading the good life with your family. I'll keep my fingers crossed for the grandson hehe, but since he'll be born into a horse family, chances are that he'll come to love them as well :-)

message 32: by Steph Ann (new)

Steph Ann | 1220 comments That gif is hilarious. Anita's chest size was an issue for me back when I was originally reading the series since I'm a very small framed woman and have the tiny chest to go along with it. I just couldn't wrap my head around Anita being that tiny but also having a huge chest lol.

I have to get a review book read first, but then I'm going to hop right into Guilty Pleasures (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #1) by Laurell K. Hamilton !

Well...she has a few spots, but you can only see them when she poops. *gasp* She's given me so much of my life back that it's easy to love her and give her a happy retirement. She certainly deserves it!

I started reading today, but then I got interrupted a few times and by the time I settled down again to read it was time to run errands. Tomorrow I'll switch to the audiobook and give it another go!

message 34: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2200 comments Lol Steph Ann, I can see where you're coming from, but believe me, being small with a huge chest is possible.

I started the book last night - in theory, which means, I was moving it around with me from desk to couch to bed but I only actually started reading it on the bus this morning.

Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ (mckennamuse) | 224 comments ROLF....Okay....the scene itself isn't funny, but as a die-hard Walking Dead Fan, I choked on my coffee in Chapter 12.

It's the whole: (view spoiler)

Hope I didn't tease you too bad, Armi! I switched over to the audiobook this morning and the narrator is really good. So far I'm enjoying the story and I'm about halfway through.

It's neat how different authors make little changes in their supernatural creature characteristics and powers. I like the way they are portrayed here. Please don't hate me..., but thank goodness none of the vampires sparkle. I don't think I could take it!

Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ (mckennamuse) | 224 comments I haven't heard Kimberly Alexis' work before, but she's really pretty good. It makes all the difference in the world!

message 38: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2200 comments Sparkly vampires.... *shudders*

I might have to listen into the audio just for curiosity's sake.

And I forgot about Jean-Claude's midnight blue eyes *sigh* I'm nearing the end of chapter 10, so I can peek at the spoiler tomorrow morning :-)

message 39: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2200 comments I have to admit that I find the writing style a little less appealing this time around then I did way back when. That might be the "fault" of quite a lot of awesome books in between when I first read this and now.

And gosh, Edward. I am newly reminded why I find him so awesome hehe.

message 40: by Nichole (new)

Nichole | 1199 comments I haven't been able to start yet. Hopefully over the weekend *crosses fingers*

I wasn't all that impressed with the first book either. But I think I gave the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th book 5 stars. If I remember correctly, I liked the 4th book the best. It's been too long!

Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ (mckennamuse) | 224 comments I think 1st in series books that really blow me away are hard to come by these days. Especially with fantasy writers putting out series that start with books like A Court of Thorns and Roses! Wow...I still can't get over the awesomeness of that book...or the second one!

I enjoyed Guilty Pleasures quite a bit. I like Anita's style and she made me laugh several times. I really like her confidence. The plot held my attention and the pacing was good.

Overall, the book isn't spectacular or anything that really wowed me, but I felt it deserved a solid four stars. I definitely want to keep reading. I'm just getting interested in these characters and want to know more about what makes them do the things they do.

It helps to hear such positive feedback about the future books!

message 42: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 2200 comments When I read "blueberry pie", it all started coming back to me. I'm about halfway through the book now, and I think I may remember where this plot is going but I'm not so sure anymore. There are definitely scenes, like the blueberry pie one where I get all excited, jumping up and down, yelling "I know, I know, I know" ;-)

Haha, true, Becky, with first-in-series like that one... I love Maas' writing.

Anyway, I'm gradually starting to get used to Hamilton's writing again and it does have a certain charm, especially in combination with Anita's personality. It somehow works quite nicely together.

message 43: by Steph Ann (new)

Steph Ann | 1220 comments I was doing the same thing at the pie part, Eldarwen! :-)

I also remember the first book being good enough to have me interested in reading more, but not spectacular. I'm about halfway through now, and I'm enjoying it more this time around.

message 44: by Sam (new)

Sam | 1052 comments I still greatly enjoy this series and it was nice to go back to the beginning. It was fun to see the beginning of the interactions with the characters, especially knowing how things turn out in the future. And re-reading this series will give me a chance to verify or disprove a theory I've had about this series and its timeline.
This was one of my first forays into urban fantasy and opened a whole new world for me.

Sam | 1052 comments Nichole wrote: "Oh? A theory huh? What? What? LOL! This series was my first hook into UF too."

I'll be checking dates to see if I'm right, but lots of people state that Hamilton drug out (view spoiler) for too long. I think that the books happen over a short period of time, so even though it was a lot of books, it was less than a year in Anita's time. Therefore, it is not surprising that (view spoiler). At least, that is my theory and I'm going to plot the timeline as we read the series to see if I'm right.

Becky ♡The Bookworm♡ (mckennamuse) | 224 comments Ohhhh... now you've really grabbed my attention! ...don't touch the spoilers...don't touch the spoilers...don't touch....*

We start book two, when????

I don't think we start book two until next month. The information in the spoilers doesn't show up until into the teens, if I remember correctly.
