I was a little apprehensive with this pick. Usually, I try to avoid reading the same genre twice in a row, but this seemed more akin to a fairy tale than the Palace Job's quirky heist themed fantasy.
Plus, I thought we'd give the Nebula Awards a chance, even after the Hugos let us down a bit with the Three Body Problem.

Quite eager to try a Nebula award, because the Hugos... well.... I was also thinking of picking a Nebula winner for my next pick, even though it was more scifi than fantasy. Hopefully this one is good and I can pick another.
Ok so I picked up this book today and I already can't put it down. I can't wait to see what happens! The writing is so nice, just seems to flow!

See maybe something is wrong with me because I struggled the last two times and I haven't started yet, but I think imma struggle this time too.
@Janelle Just a quick question, is your issue that you don't like the character much, or the first person style?

The first person doesn't bother me, I think it was Agnieszka tendency to whine in those first chapters, It didn't help that the Dragon was a snothead too in the early chapters. I'm going to start this again this week. I don't remember my headspace last time, but I've been a reading machine the past weeks so let's hope that helps.
I finished today! Gosh was that easy to read, I love my fantasy but it always takes a lot of time to read them due to the difficult words and looooong monologues. This was a lovely book, really enjoyed!

I have had that problem with some books, where the beginning is just...so so but once you get through that first little bit the rest is awesome! Have fun Lara!
@Janelle Oh my god, she really did moan. And I also completely agree about the Dragon. It's really difficult to read anything where you don't like the main characters.

I'll get another mug of coffee and plunge through chapter 2 of Uprooted. But at this point, I feel like getting out my beautifully illustrated (non-Disney story) classic tale of Beauty and the Beast and reading that instead.
The first chapters are the worse and I see why people struggle on it. I'd probably have stopped reading if it weren't for the Literally Geeky whips lashing out at me while shouting "finish it, finish it!"
It does get better... and the worse... and then better... and worse... it's a mix feeling regarding this book. Which is a shame really, because really nice folklore and fantasy and world-building.
Interested to see what everyone thought of it.
On a side note, I've been on a Nebula award-winner binge reading. There are definitely some 5* books in those awards.
disclaimer: No Donovan Sotams are actually hurt during the reading process of the Literally Geeky books... unless you count bad literature as painful.

This book definitely has some memorable and compelling parts; in between... there's clothes.
Naomi Novik created an interesting and original tale on how we shape the land and are shaped by it, unfortunately it wears a donkeyskin, one that's, on the surface, deeply indebted to Beauty and the Beast.
