Book reading order - 1st world problem
date
newest »

I still get a lot of my books from the library and usually have to wait for interloan from other libraries in the city. My problem is I request all these books and some show holds for a while, but suddenly all the books I've requested end up being ready at once. Or as it the recent case with Dresden Files, I've ended up with Book #4 being ready to collect, but still waiting on Book #3. Haha some of the people when they finish #3 will be wondering why they have to wait for the next book ;-). I only requested Book #4 as I was only second on the book hold list.
I've learnt that if you want to request majority of Agatha Christie books be prepared for a long, long wait.

My first world problems is that I have read approximately 5 series debuts I really want to follow up with, but I have another 3 on my kindle. And now I don't know whether I should just finish the ones I started, or start the remaining, or interleave somehow.

I'm not sure it's something to admire....it's more of an obsessive-compulsive/uber-anal personality thing that won't let me start a series without finishing it (unless I just HATED the first book).
But....this was precisely why I made my rule (probably 20 years ago now) to not read a series that isn't complete (or at least a definitive 'cycle' of it is complete). If I were in your shoes, I'd be debating whether I had to go back and reread because I forgot part of the story.

The important part is that you are reading the books in order. People that say, "So what? I'm reading the 4th book first." put my brain in a tailspin.
Sad revelation: My wife is sometimes one of those people.

Even the thought of that is absolutely painful.
I skipped some long series when I was younger primarily because I wasn't really sure of the reading order and COULDN'T read it in the wrong order.

This is the right thing to do!

For what it's worth, I finished the Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children #2 (Hollow City) and am now about half way through Tomorrow the Killing (e.g. Low Town #2).
I'm still in the library hold queue for Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children #3.
As soon as I return Low Town #2, I can return and put in the Inter-Library Loan request for Low Town #3 (since library only has Low Town #1, but not #2 and #3).

LOL!! Amen to that!!!
I 'discovered' last year after stopping the Shannara series for so many years (and wanting to get back to it now that so many books were written) that almost all of the 'cycles' within the series were compiled into a one-book kindle version for dirt cheap ($9.99 or less, often more like $4.99). So I pretty much bought the entire Shannara line last year (all for < $50.00 I think).

Exactly. Kindle discounts are actually quite good nowadays. Not all will be 1.99$ but even 50% discount are already great deals.
Best one I've found so far would be Robin Hobb's Rainwild Chronicles, 4 books, only around 12 bucks more or less.
Well, I've finished Maze Runner series and Miss Pergrine's Home For Peculiar Children now.
I was able to get 2nd Low Town book on Inter-Library Loan to read that.
I still have Low Town #3 and The Builders to read, but I have a lot of things going on at the moment and might be on a small reading hiatus for bit. Hopefully to resume very soon.

Previously I was reading The Maze Runner trilogy (which I own kindle versions of), but right toward the end of book 2 the "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" ebook I'd put a hold on finally came in, so I had to go to that (as I was on library timeline).
I then put a hold in for book 2 of Miss Peregrine's trilogy and read the 3rd Maze Runner book. Now I'm reading the second Miss Peregrine's book and have a hold on the 3rd.
The 3rd looks like it may take a few more weeks (sometimes hard to tell). Then there's Low Town? Remember the Low Town group read we did? Well, I loved the book and wanted to read the other 2 books in series, but my library only had the first book. So I recently put in an inter-library loan to get the second book.
It just came in. Now it should be OK, because Miss Peregrine - book 3 is still on hold. Also, though, we are starting a group read of "The Builders" (another kindle book I'd bought) and want to read that, but I'll be on library time again, as I can't wait too long to pick up the Low-Town #2 book from the library.
By the time I finish Miss Peregrine #2 and get to Low Town, Miss Peregrine #3 might be ready and as I'll be on library time, I may have to read that before "The Builders".
Oh boy.....it's been a weird confusing mess lately. Thanks for listening...I needed to rant.
If you're keeping score at home, the order will (not determined fully yet) probably be something like this:
Low-Town #1.
...
Maze Runner #1
Maze Runner #2
Miss Peregrine #1
Maze Runner #3
Miss Peregrine #2
Low-Town #2
Miss Peregrine #3
The Builders
Low-Town #3 (which I haven't even requested from library yet).
