For fuck's sake.

Every time I turn around they've rearranged the furniture on me. Plus all the links they insert that are supposed to take you back to the "old page" don't work for me, they just send me back to the brand new redesigned home page.

Is anyone else about to blow two gaskets or just me?

I assume they disabled the general status update feature so no one could publicly bitch about the redesign.

message 3: by Jaye (new)

Jaye | 180 comments Is the home page where the discussions/updates are?
I usually don't try anything out that is new. I wait until they force it upon me unbidden.

Yes.

I don't try out the new stuff either....this was forced on me! It was what showed up when I logged in.

Sucks because I really liked seeing what people in my feed were reading.

message 7: by CD (new)

CD | 1577 comments I went through this a few weeks ago. I kept having to click on a link to get back to something that worked.

Then one day the UI returned almost to the same it had been. A few minor differences but mostly what it was. I had complained heavily and I thought until I saw this post that the radical changes had mostly fallen into the bad design bucket.

Hmmm, I didn't care for the concept that was being explored and I hope they abandon it. Or get somebody who knows what they are doing and not just 'do something new'!

ARghh! **Y($, etc., etc.

message 8: by CD (new)

CD | 1577 comments Looking at the current discussion, it references the beta pages. They were really bad!

I hope there aren't link still floating to them because they will just alienate many users. Once you get into them they didn't exit/terminate properly. I would postulate that this is where Lobstergirl and others are getting 'stuck'.

They're forever at doing something just to "do something new" and they don't pay attention to current and previous problems.

Goodreads jenga is what it's become.

message 10: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Lobstergirl | 24778 comments Mod
Apparently one group of people are able to exit the beta home page, but another group (including me and several people in that thread) are unable. No matter what I click on that people indicate will get me out of the beta page, nothing gets me back to the old site. (Except using the pages that haven't gone to the new design.) So now I'm logging in via a different page.

I see a big ugly effing banner ad at the top I can't get rid of, it reappears no matter how many times I try to block it.

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

I find GR very confusing now. It might be because I only pop in every few months, if that. GR seems different every time, and not in a good way...or maybe I'm just getting old and crotchety about changes that appear to be made purely for the sake of change.

Word on the street is that GR wants people to be followed rather than friended. Why??? Who the F knows. Why the buttons have to be so F'ing prominent and large out of all proportion is another question no one can answer.

As far as I can tell, it's also, now, impossible to see someone's profile page and determine whether they are following you.

CD | 1577 comments Lobstergirl wrote: "As far as I can tell, it's also, now, impossible to see someone's profile page and determine whether they are following you."

I can look at my profile and see who is following me. I tried a few random people online and those that don't have a private profile it shows who they are following, cute little pictures even.

message 28: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Lobstergirl | 24778 comments Mod
Yes, but you used to be able to look at the TOP of their profile and see that "X is following you." You didn't have to look at pictures or nothin. If a person is following hundreds of people, you might have to look through hundreds of those tiny pics to see your own pic.

It's FUCKED UP. No two ways about it, FUCKED UP and just FUCKED UP.

message 29: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 3594 comments Change isn't always for the better. Companies should do some testing with actual users first. DirecTV recently changed its menu and options for using it. Some functions are now convoluted and take 3 steps instead of one. And the font is tiny. Pretty fucked up, also.

message 30: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Lobstergirl | 24778 comments Mod
Oh for fuck's sake now the user's "Most Read Authors" page is gone. Apparently I was the only person who ever looked at my most read authors so they took it away.

I hate these fuckers.

message 37: by Marie (new)

Marie GR just wants to make us all have a bad day! They are constantly changing things on here as they think it will make it better for everyone, but all it does is make things worse. They are not the only ones though as Facebook does the same thing. They too update stuff on there and things end up disappearing.

What upsets me the most about GR is that sometimes I try to get on here and it says this: "the site is down for maintenance, try again later" and it will show a rocking chair icon.

With technology the way it is in this day and age, these companies need to have the capability to work maintenance in the background and not lock out the readers.

And now there is a giant ugly thing with giant stars on the book page of each book you've shelved or rated (at the top of all the reviews) asking you to write a review if you haven't already. FUCK OFF already.

UGLY.

Edit: it's actually on EVERY book page not just books you've shelved.

"Lobstergirl, start your review of Every Last Cuckoo"

- 5 giant stars -

Oh for fucks sake.

Now they are redesigning the book page to make everything more giant and rounding all the corners. In addition to the visual disturbance it will take 6 months to figure out where everything is on the page. And certainly they will take advantage of the opportunity to get rid of elements that people like.

It's so hideous it brought me out of GR retirement just to comment.

Ever since Amz bought GR, this site has been about generating sales for Amz. I used to be an active GR Librarian, but after the buyout I saw no reason to edit corporate databases for free. I still do it to keep my page count accurate & to help out authors I like, but that's about it.

I used to sell books via Amz, but since they are a horrible company in so many ways I stopped. I try to vote with my dollar and I'm not willing to give them a cut of my sales until they start paying their fair share of taxes, at the very least.

I don't know if this design change is driven primarily by bad taste (everything cool looks like a mobile app!) or just flat out greed (remove/hide non-sales-related functionality and enlarge the Buy on Amz button), but this is probably my last hurrah. If they go through with the design downgrade, they will have stopped pretending that GR is anything but a sales vehicle.

I'd like to move over to LibraryThing, but Amz has a financial interest in that as well (they also own ABE, which I've been boycotting ever since). Don't know what I'm going to do. More time reading, I guess.

It's their property, it's their money, they can do what they want with it. I had hundreds, if not thousands, of hours of fun here talking shit in groups and nerding out privately. If they're going to make it annoying even to look at and hide the functionality I still come here for, however, there's no reason to stay.

Here's how to take your records with you:

CD | 1577 comments Are you a robot?

I am having Captcha verification popping up about two out of three times that I visit Goodreads. Captcha itself has been changed so bots can't beat it as easily. It thus doesn't work as 'well' as it once did. I am wondering if it dislikes my password manager.

message 46: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

I have to do Captcha about 20% of the time I log in. It could be worse I guess.

Fuckin' book page.

So irritated.

10X bigger than every other page, scroll, scroll, scroll to get anywhere on the page.

Now you can only see if people rated or reviewed the book.

You can't simply see who SHELVED it. Even your friends and followers, if they only SHELVED the book they won't show up on the page.

So many things missing from the fuckin' book page.

What is even the POINT of the redesign??

Seizure Romero | 99 comments Lobstergirl wrote: ".... What is even the POINT of the redesign??"

For Amz to sell books.

That's all GR has been about since Amz Borg'd it.

See my Apr 02, 2021 comment above for the full tirade.

FWIW, I hit the feedback button every time I saw one of the ugly-ass book pages, left occasionally vitriolic feedback, and eventually I stopped seeing them. If only they'd give us the option to choose our interface.

But really, it's about selling books.

message 49: by Seizure Romero (new)

Seizure Romero | 99 comments I got a brief reprieve from the hideous new book page, but it now looks like the changes are permanent.

The url below has links to contact GR or leave feedback. If we blow it up enough, maybe they'll at least give us the option to choose the new or the old look.
