Fishface | 738 comments A discussion zone for...you know...stuff that happens at your library!

I only came here tonight on a whim, because I realized it might be my last chance this week to review The Pike for my fish blog before the glory of that book fades from my mind. I sort of gritted my teeth and came in, expecting the usual assortment of hangers-on loudly discussing how much they hate President Obama and generally disrupting my concentration.

Well, not only are none of those people here today, but there's a funk band in the reading room playing some pretty good music to a bunch of wildly applauding kids! And here I thought they didn't like anyone but Slim Shady...

EDIT: Now they've switched over to ska! The audience is transfixed!

We do have people that come and spend the day at the library during the hot weather.

We have parents that drop their kids here all day. We do not babysit them and have told the parents of the very young children that this is not allowed and we will call the police and they will get in touch with the parents. Pretty much if the older kids behave and don't cause trouble and pretty much read or play games that are available that's fine. If the children don't behave we call the parents the first time, after that the police get involved. It's the only way we keep the peace.

Fishface | 738 comments Time was you COULD drop your kids off at the library and they would behave. Not these days.

I believe some people would drop their kids off at the library and think it was a free babysitter. Some people have no brains these days.

There used to be a store in my area that had a toy train set up for demonstration. The store had to post signs that said you couldn't drop off your kid at the store to play while you did your other shopping.

Trump leads by his vulgar example. Why would one expect anything less from a Trump crowd?

Charlene, do you think this is a sign of the times? Is there someone that is perfect? Can we expect good people to run when they have everything they've ever done their whole lives under scrutiny and the opposite party pays people good money to dig up dirt on them?

No one is perfect. Everyone has flaws, so we need people who are level-headed, decent, quick-thinking and above all, remember to put the country first instead of themselves. Yes there are people out there who can do a good job, but it is very difficult to get them to take charge in a world where every word is dissected minutely. Where whatever you say is considered wrong. Of course kicking out all the idiots in the Senate and House would be a good start. I for one never vote for the incumbent, I want them out and new people in there instead.

message 13: by Fishface (last edited Aug 05, 2016 01:10PM) (new)

Fishface | 738 comments Right now we have the only "perfect" president I can ever remember. He has not a breath of scandal following him in his public or private lives. He has met or exceeded most of the goals he set when he was elected (albeit with some huge exceptions, like closing the prison at Gitmo). You can e-mail him and everything, unlike any previous guy in the Oval Office -- you'll get more than a form letter in response, too. And he is the most hated, reviled, despised president ever. I'm thinking, maybe we WANT a scurrilous dinkweed in that office.

And I don't feel we're off-topic because the vast majority of people who hang out at my local library are spending their time there watching bizzarro videos that claim to prove Barry Obama is the Antichrist, that he wasn't born in the USA, that his election is a sure sign of the End Times, that he eats baked children for dinner, you name it. These are the thanks he gets for getting the unemployment rate down to 4.9% and trying to make sure everyone in the country has health insurance.

No one is always happy with who ever is picked. We just have to make our preferences known and keep at it.

So sorry to see the direction this election/world has taken. I think that is disgusting that the child said that. He obviously learned that from his parents. What kind of world is that when we teach our kids to say things like that. Parents should teach their kids to be respectful of everyone even if you don't agree.

The crowd at Trump rallies seem to signify a new viciousness in American politics. There seems to be too many Skinheads, Nazis, White Supremacists, David Duke followers, Crackers, Racists, etc. at those rallies. The candidate doesn't do enough to disavow them.

My grandson says I should run because if Trump can win anyone can. He said this a while ago when it looked like he could actually win.

Fishface | 738 comments With July over (they aren't open Sundays in July) I can once again go to the library 7 days a week, as needed. This is especially good because the northern half of the county is about to become a blazing mess because the Melonfest is going on at the same time as the Fowlerville Fair, a few miles apart. Best to steer clear. They even just put a warning on the radio about people catching swine flu from the pig shows at other county fairs. Whee!

I'm amazed that people seemed to have forgotten that women haven't always had the rights they have today and the women who have fought so that we have these freedoms. It hasn't been that many years that a woman would have never had the chance to run for president.

I know this dates me, but I was in the first class of my high school that girls could wear PANTS to school. We had to have a protest meeting in the high school gym to be able to wear pants. Even then, we were told we could wear pants but they could not be jeans and they could not have holes in them. I look at kids these days and think "you have no idea".

We could not wear pants in grade school and a few girls protested at the junior high and that is when girls first were able to wear pants to school. Probably was earlier 1970s. I don't remember if we could wear jeans in junior high but by high school the girls were wearing jeans.

message 30: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 738 comments I can remember hearing, in utter shock, when I was in 7th grade that businesses were allowed to -- and often did -- fire women the instant they got married, saying "Your place is at home, taking care of your husband." The practice didn't last long beyond that, but holy horseapples, Batman! These days that boss would get a lawsuit slammed up his tail before he'd even finished saying that sentence. And now we have a very serious female presidential candidate warming up in the bullpen.

Julie, sounds like you are I are about the same age. Girls these days have no idea what the women in the 1900's through the 70's did for them to have the right to do things they take for granted today, such as the right to wear pants.

Fishface, the place where I worked in 1989 did not save a woman's job when she went on maternity leave. When you came back you had to take whatever hours were available and if it wasn't you're normal shift that was too bad. A woman that was pregnant just a few months before me protested that rule and won. When I was pregnant I was told I couldn't use my sick leave for maternity leave. I protested that and also won.

Sandra Day O'Connor, who graduated 3rd in her law school class at Stanford, could not get a legal job at graduation because she was a woman. She went on to to be the first woman Supreme Court Justice.

Fishface | 738 comments The library has saved my rear end again!!! Twice in one day! Not only did I acquire an ILL copy of Three Sisters in Black, which you can't even find on addALL.com which means there's not a copy for sale On. This. Planet! -- but on top of that I was able to use the library computer to make online payments for three waiting prescriptions after my HSA debit card crapped the bed, and after the second time I was promised that this time they'll make it a priority and totally fix it, honest, in 2 days instead of the usual 15. I did an end run around them and paid it without the card. Which I'm ready to chop up with a knife after all the trouble they've been giving me since November.

Thank you, my friend, the library!

message 35: by Fishface (last edited Jan 20, 2017 12:22PM) (new)

Fishface | 738 comments No, make that three times! I just went to MelCat to look for either the book or movie versions of Cruising, and found the book immediately. (Several libraries have the movie, but they're not available.) So I looked at Amazon to see their prices -- and the book I just had shipped to me for freebies costs (in hardback) from $42.75, used, up to a fairly excessive $2,030.91 for a new copy. The paperback starts at $55.99 and goes up to $167.94. Yikes.
