More about the root beer float...Also known as the “Black Cow,” the root beer float got its start in Colorado in a mining camp. Frank J. Wisner of Cripple Creek, Colorado, gets the credit for inventing the “Black Cow” way back in August of 1893.

On this day:1947 Thor Heyerdahl's balsa wood raft the Kon-Tiki smashed into the reef at Raroia in the Tuamotu Islands. The journey lasted 101 days and the raft swam 4,300 mi (7,000 km) across the Pacific Ocean. This attempt to swim across the ocean was made to prove, that prehistoric peoples could have traveled from South America.
On this day:1909 Alice Huyler Ramsey and her three friends became the first women to complete a transcontinental auto trip. Their trip started in New York and finished in Florida.
On this day:1782 George Washington, then-delegate to the First Continental Congress from Virginia, ordered creation of the Badge of Military Merit to honor soldiers wounded in battle. The Badge was later renamed to more poetic Purple Heart.
On this day:1635 Died: Friedrich Spee, German poet, most notable as the early opponent of trials of witchcraft. He insisted that torturing is not a good way of obtaining truth from someone, who's undergoing painful questioning.

IPA is consistently the top selling craft beer style in America, representing around 18.4% of total craft beer sales.
Double IPAs (also referred to as Imperial IPAs) are a stronger, very hoppy variant of IPAs that typically have alcohol content above 7.5% by volume
American-style IPA is generally drier and uses American hops to give an intense hop profile with more floral, citrusy, piney, or tropical characteristics.
English-style IPA is generally maltier flavored brew that uses English hops and yeasts, giving a more fruity and herbal aroma with a lower ABV than American IPAs.
Some other events on this date:1794 The Whiskey Rebellion. Protesting the 1791 federal tax on distilled spirits a large gathering of rebels in western Pennsylvania burned the regional tax inspectors home. President Washington ordered 13,000 troops to the area, but opposition disappeared.
1991 The world’s largest Burger King opened in Budapest.

National Frozen Custard DayFrozen custard is a type of frozen dessert that was invented by ice cream vendors Elton and Archie Kohr from Coney Island, New-York.
Frozen custard is similar to ice cream, but it contains egg yolks in addition to cream and sugar. Adding egg yolks allows to create a smoother texture and help the dessert stay cold longer. Frozen custard was invented in 1919 but it had been unknown to the wide public until 1933.
A frozen custard stand at the World's Fair in Chicago helped spread the dessert's popularity across the United States. Frozen custard is especially popular in Wisconsin (Milwaukee is even referred to as the unofficial frozen custard capital of the world) and Ohio.
According to the Food and Drug Administration requirements, frozen custard must contain at least 1.4% egg yolk solids and 10% milkfat. True frozen custard is a very dense dessert with a smooth consistency and a thick, creamy texture. It is typically prepared right at frozen custard stands, rather than stored. Most stands offer three flavors per day: vanilla, chocolate, and “flavor of the day”.
Custard bases may also be used for quiches and other savory foods.
Depending on how much egg or thickener is used, custard may vary in consistency from a thin pouring sauce (crème anglaise), to a thick pastry cream used to fill éclairs.
Custard is a variety of culinary preparations based on a cooked mixture of milk or cream and egg yolk.
The most common custards are used as desserts or dessert sauces and typically include sugar and vanilla.
Sometimes flour, corn starch, or gelatin is added as in pastry cream or creme patissiere.

National Dollar Day
August 8 commemorates the day Congress established the U.S. monetary system in 1786. It’s National Dollar Day!
The first U.S. dollar bill wasn’t printed until 1862, and it didn’t bear the image of George Washington, either. Salmon P. Chase, President Lincoln’s Secretary of Treasury, was featured on the first greenback.

A Jamaican patty is defined as a “turnover style pastry” which can have a variety of fillings such as seasoned ground beef, chicken, seafood or vegetables. The crust is ideally flaky in texture, half-moon in shape, and the fillings are usually spicy, but milder varieties are available for the faint of heart. It is said that the Jamaican Patty as we know it today, was born from the English Cornish Pastry, a similar concoction that came to Jamaica during the colonial days. It also bears a resemblance to the Spanish empanada.
The patty has become a staple among Jamaicans, acting as a quick “grab-n-go” or “meal-on-the-run” type of snack. A typical person eats a patty or two for lunch while in school or at work. It serves well as a hot & nutritious snack and when paired with a coco-bread it becomes a belly-filling & satisfying meal in itself.
