Sydney Baker (sydneybaker) Hello. My name is Sydney. I have been searching for online book clubs and found Goodreads. In looking for Tolkien groups, I found this one. I hope it is ok that I joined. I actually just started re-reading The Silmarillion about a week ago. I have read it before, but I have bit of catching up to do. I love the idea of reading through all of Tolkien's Middle Earth works.

Hai Sydney! Welcome to our group.

Since you're re-reading The Silmarillion now, you must join in our discussion. We've been reading it since last January and now into chapter 11 and 12. We're reading it two chapters a month, but you can read it as many chapters as you want, really and discuss it as our reading progress.

Aside The Silmarillion buddy reading, you can also post illustrations or if you have any resources or anything regarding Tolkien works, feel free to share it with us.

Hope you enjoy your stay here :)

Rachmi | 180 comments Hi Ralf, welcome!

Don't worry about your English, I'm not a native either. I'm Indonesian and am still learning it. You'll surely find my English a bit weird sometimes :)

I knew Tolkien because of the movies, read it right after The Fellowship of the Ring came out in end of 2001. So I think I read it in early 2002. And since then I'm mesmerized with the way Tolkien write his stories and read The Hobbit.

I then tried to read Silmarillion but since it took more than 10 years for Indonesia publisher to published it, I tried to read it in English last year but failed miserably, hahaha. I couldn't even pass chapter one.

As Indonesian edition published end of last year, I try reading it again, now both in Indonesian and English. I think it's still quite a hard reading even when I read it in my own language but buddy reading and discussing it here helped me a lot.

So I do hope you enjoy our buddy reading and discussing, as much as I enjoy it :)

Heidi Garrett (heidi_g) | 218 comments Ralf,

Ditto on the welcome! I too had read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings in the past, the Hobbit more than once, I didn't get through my re-read of LoTR (red face). So The Silmarillion is completely new for me.

Please, catch up when you can. The more the merrier:D

As for your language, PLEASE, no worries! I think for the moment, I'm the only native english-speaker in the group. I am constantly amazed at Rachmi's and Wita's eloquence in a second language. Actually, your's too in your first post!

One of the things that is so AWESOME about Tolkien is how many read it all over the world!

So, welcome!

Sydney Baker (sydneybaker) Welcome. Glad to see our group is growing and the discussions continue. On language: just to clarify, I too am a native English-speaker. I am from the state of Arkansas in the USA. That being said, I do find Tolkien difficult to understand at times. I don't know if it is because he was so brilliant or if it is because he was British. Sometimes, British English can be a bit different and much more formal than American English.

Wita (ofwita_odyssey) | 40 comments Hi Ralf, lfmarybooks and Sydney (especially for Sydney, I just realized that I haven't said hello to you *sorry ☺)... welcome!
So glad that you're all here and I hope you'll be having a great time on this group like I do!
A little bit of me, I joined this group when they've reached reading on chapter 7 and 8. I've read The Hobbit, The Lord of The Rings trilogy, The Silmarillion and Children of Hurin. I'm Indonesian and still on progress learning English language. So pardon me if you find my English is a bit awkward to you.
