Julie (julie_prewett) I love a good book, but I love a FREE good book even more! :-)

I want to put links or references/directions on how to get these free books in one spot, so anyone looking for a freebie, can just come here and see some that might be available.

My disclaimer: I am not recommending any of these personally as I haven't read all of them; the book might no longer be free. Double check before you click the purchase button! :-)

Also, please feel free to add any that you have also found that is free on here. The more, the merrier.

Thanks!

P.S. If you click on a book, and it's no longer listed for free, please let me know and Allison or I can delete it from here. Thanks so much!

Julie (julie_prewett) I see the phrase/word "steampunk" and I am not sure what that means. How would you describe it? Thanks!!

StarMan (thestarman) | 1942 comments Julie wrote: "I see the phrase/word "steampunk" and I am not sure what that means. How would you describe it? Thanks!!"

See: https://www.goodreads.com/genres/stea...

"Steampunk" is sort of an alternate or speculative history sub-genre (some would say mild fantasy or mild sci-fi), with many variations. Steampunk romance seems to be a common one. What sets steampunk apart is that the stories take place in sort of an alternate timeline where technology/gadgets/transportation took a different path:

mechanical, rather than digital
airships (dirigbiles) instead of airplanes/jets ...
steam power instead of fossil fuels...
clothing that looks like a mismash of Victorian era + sci-fi weirdness...
clockworks, gears, pistons, steam locomotives, etc.

Think Jules Verne or H.G. Wells, extrapolated into the future! Or a world where the gasoline engine or transistor chips were never invented. Some steampunk stories have a bit of Western (cowboy era) flair as well, or unusual gadgets that Sherlock Holmes would have loved.

The plot of a steampunk book could be anything: a big adventure, a murder mystery, romance, dystopia/apocalypse, mechanical robots, or even vampires. Some have magical or paranormal elements.

One example I've read is

Soulless
Soulless (Parasol Protectorate, #1) by Gail Carriger
(this one happens to have supernatural creatures and paranormal elements, but is basically a romance -- with tons of snarky dialogue.)

A recent bestseller that has steampunk-ish and sci-fi elements (including cyborgs) is a fun re-telling of "Cinderella":

Cinder
Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles, #1) by Marissa Meyer

Science fiction readers might enjoy The Difference Engine, in which Charles Babbage's mechanical computers changed the course of history in the 1850s, heralding in a computing era 100 years early.

A movie example of steampunk is 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow' (Jude Law, Angelina Jolie). "Dr Who" episodes often have some steampunk elements as well. "Firefly" (a popular sci-fi series) had some Western and steampunk elements as well... even though it was set in the future, and involved spaceships.

Just Elise (justelise) | 176 comments Fantastic explanation, StarMan! :) I haven't read many steampunky books, but I think it's a fun genre, and it looks really cool in movies. I'll add
The City of Lost Children
and Jack and the Cuckoo Clock Heart (which is a cute little animated film I fell in love with). They're both French, the former in the French language, the latter is available in an English version. The Golden Compass and Hugo are cool, too, imo.

Adding some things to my list. Thanks! :)

message 29: by Just Elise (new)

Just Elise (justelise) | 176 comments Oh, yeah. I linked to the movies, but most of those were based on books. The only one of them I've read so far is The Boy with the Cuckoo-Clock Heart. It pains me to say so, but the movie was better. But the author based both the movie and book on songs he'd written, so it's the same guy behind any version, so I don't feel so guilty saying that. ;)

message 30: by Julie (new)

Julie (julie_prewett) Thanks StarMan. Will also be adding some of these as well. Hubby and I love the series "Firefly". We actually own the series n DVD. I understand it better now. I think people at Cosplay conventions dress up like this as well.

Julie,

If you think about it, the Victorian era (c. 1837-1901) in Europe and the "Wild West" era in America (c 1800-1920) have much overlap. Some people talk about a Victorian West era. Extrapolate the styles/technology of those eras, and you could get a steampunk future.

Since you & hubby like FIREFLY, are y'all enjoying the new KILLJOY series on Sci-Fi? It looks remotely similar:

Bkwmlee | 544 comments Hi! Thanks for creating this thread -- definitely a great idea!

I don't have any specific free book recommendations (yet) but for those who are Amazon Prime members, they have their "Kindle First" program where members get to choose 1 book to download for free out of 6 new titles being released each month. Since the 6 books are all from different genres, there is bound to be 1 that suits each person's fancy. Prime members also get to choose from a wide selection of books to read for free on their tablets/mobile devices via Amazon's Kindle lending library (it's essentially the same thing as the Kindle Unlimited program, except it's part of Prime membership now so don't need to pay a separate subscription fee).

I guess in a way, the above isn't exactly "free" in that there IS some type of subscription fee involved, but for busy bookworms like me who love to read and is always on the lookout for interesting books to fuel my reading habit but don't have time to spend hours (literally, for me at least) browsing at the local library or brick and mortar bookstore, something like the above is perfect and definitely well worth the investment!

Someone may have already put this out but I get quite a few free ebooks through bookbub. Some are not free but inexpensive. I usually get the free ones only unless there is a great deal on one of my favorite authors. You sign up, pick your genres, and they send you a daily email of deals. Some are deals just for the that day, others may run longer, so take a quick browse through the email daily. I have many books on my Kindle and Nook through bookbub. Enjoy!
