Funky Fish (goodreadscompetitcroissant) Hey everyone! I know I haven't really been posting that regularly because I've had a lot of schoolwork, but I had an idea!

So basically, I have realised that not many people from other countries know that much about Australia and its people. I thought, 'Why don't I make a thread for people to ask Australians questions?'

So that's exactly what I did! I am an Australian, so if anyone from another country is curious about something, ask away! I will try to answer your questions as best as I can, and other Australians can answer them too, if you want!

I also thought that if we have an "Ask An Australian" thread, then why don't we have threads for every other country? So, if the mods are ok with this, you guys should go and make your own threads where people can ask questions about YOUR country! Just make sure that we don't double up our threads, so check if your country is already here before making a thread.

Anyway, I hope this is fun! Ask away!

L.C. Perry | 100 comments Ok, so this seems like completely out of the blue, but on average how big are the spiders there? I've seen a couple videos where they are HUGE but I wasn't sure if that's common XD

message 3: by Aurelius (new)

Aurelius | 229 comments I have a question!
So what kind of music is popular on Austrailia? Also what's the current state of the country- like what's on the news? Also, what kind of candy do people like there? And what tv shows?
Lol I got really curious all of a sudden XD

My cousins live in Austrailia

Funky Fish (goodreadscompetitcroissant) Ooh, questions! This is exciting!

@L.C., I live in the city, so I don't come across many spiders, but most of the ones I do see are kinda average sized. Except for the huntsmen. Those spiders an grow to the size of your hand, or bigger in some cases! But you don't need to worry about them. They won't kill you. It's the red backs and the funnel web spiders that you need to watch out for, and they're usually pretty small.

@Aurelius, Our popular music is pretty similar to American music, I think. Just pop and techno dance-y kind of songs. Uh, not much is on the news right now, I think. I'm not sure. I don't catch up with the news XD. Haha, the most popular Australian lollies are probably red frogs, jelly snakes, milk bottle lollies, and I'm sure there are heaps more, but that's all I can think of at the moment. TV shows? I think ours are pretty similar to other countries, except we have the horrible "Home And Away" show. Ugh, that show is a disgrace to Australia.

That's all I can answer for now, because I need to go to school, but any other Aussies are free to answer questions! :)

Don't forget musk sticks :P

message 8: by Rells (new)

Rells (gingerwolfie) are there actually kangaroos just roaming around? cuz that wud be SO AWESOME!

message 9: by Funky Fish (new)

Funky Fish (goodreadscompetitcroissant) @Aurelius, You definitely should! And if you're getting Australian food, make sure to also get Tim Tams, Vegemite, pavlova, lamingtons, Milo and some Shapes (although not the new and improved ones, they're terrible)

@Cameron, Oh yeah! Musk sticks are the best!

@Anarchy, Yeah, sure! You can call Australians Aussies, we won't get offended :)

@GingerQueen, Hmm... Like I said before, I live in the city, so I don't see too many kangaroos, but in some places, kangaroos are about as common as rabbits! I went to Central Australia once, and there were a few kangaroos roaming around there. But if you want to see a kangaroo, go to either Koala Park or Featherdale. They have heaps of Aussie animals that just walk around everywhere :)

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

Still wondering anxiously about their politics, assuming it will be nice to know when I take over the world or at least make an alliance with them... >:3

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

what about our political system?

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

Everything. Who runs it, how it works and stuff

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

We have a prime minister. we have to major parties - Labor and Liberal. Voting takes place every 4 years. Then in every state we have a Premier. But our politicians are slightly delusional.

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

Tell me about it xD so it sounds kinda like the US with different name. What do the different parties stand for?

message 20: by [deleted user] (last edited Sep 15, 2016 11:44PM) (new)

(This does not anwser any questions. This is just some knowledge.)

Well I'm an Aussie too!

Also there is one other party that isn't quite major or minor.. they are kinda in between, they are called The Greens. The Greens stand for stuff like the eco-system and climate change and refugee's. The Labour is in opposition right now and the Liberals are in charge. Our Prme Minster is Malcom Turnbull. I'm kinda on top of our Parliment... KINDA... I know I go for Labour!

BTW there are really RACEST parties like the One Nation party.

Look at this below (BTW Pauline Hanson is their leader!):
http://thenewdaily.com.au/news/electi...

https://museumvictoria.com.au/immigra...

Sorry if this is offencive to anyone! I really don't agree with this!

message 21: by Funky Fish (new)

Funky Fish (goodreadscompetitcroissant) Hey Bree! Another Aussie, yay! Anyway, I don't agree with those parties either. They're like the Donald Trump of Australian democracy XD I'm too young to vote, but even if I could vote, I don't know who I would go for. They all have problems.

Have you heard about the possibility of the same-sex marriage plebiscite? What do you think of that?

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

Well I can't vote eithier, but I do have a favourite former Prime Minster ( Gough Whitlam ) and he was Labor. He did a lot for our counrty but in the 3 years he was Prime Minister, he did alot! I don't agree with any of the parties on most things (BUT PAULINE HANSON, I REALLY, STRONGLY DISAGREE WITH EVERYTHING!). But Gough Whitlam got the sack because he was doing too much too soon, and people got scared he was doing way too much. He gove aborigional rights and single mothers help act. He changed our Anthem and lots more! He did somethings for Uni-students, but the thing I really find disrespectful is that the Liberals got rid of the Uni-student thing 2-5 days after he passed away (thats why I don't like the Liberals that much).

Sorry, back to Petitcroissiant's question, yes I have heard and I think that its ridiculous that we have to even have a vote or a bill on it. Why do we have to stop people who love each over, from getting married??? I mean I'm not gay or a lesbian but I really think its not our place to say that people shouldn't get married.

Regards,
Bree

message 23: by Funky Fish (new)

Funky Fish (goodreadscompetitcroissant) I totally agree, Bree. Marriage is a right that every human being should have. Because what is marriage but a declaration of love? And what right does anyone have to claim that someone's love is more or less valid than others? You're right, it's ridiculous that we even have to have this discussion. I am personally a lesbian myself, but I don't think that factor impacts my decision that much. If we had a plebiscite for straight marriage, I reckon I would support that all the way too. The truth is, we're all human beings and for one group in society to have more rights than another group is immoral and unjust. Everyone deserves to be treated with equal respect and we all deserve the right to get married :)

message 24: by Funky Fish (new)

Funky Fish (goodreadscompetitcroissant) By the way, sorry for rambling. It's just an issue that I feel very strongly about :)

I know Siri has an "Australian" accent option. Does it actually sound "Australian" to you?

message 29: by Funky Fish (new)

Funky Fish (goodreadscompetitcroissant) Hey guys!

That's awesome, Kavy! I hope you have a great time here! :)

@Quetzalqueen, Surprisingly, the Australian Siri option is pretty accurate in my opinion :)

These are great questions, guys!
