Paul and Alexi are in a relationship. Your thoughts about them as a couple? Does it have staying power?

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1392 comments I think they might make it as a couple. I hope Paul has a colleague and companion who understands what he does and why, with respect to his medical research.

Phrynne | 607 comments Must say I will be happy if they do

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 694 comments I'm lukewarm on their relationship. I hope it works out for Gibson's sake. He's been so long without female, er, companionship that it makes sense he'd fixate on Alexi so fast. I'm glad that she at least had the sense to tell him he didn't love her yet. I'm less sold on Alexi's feelings for Gibson as being romantic in nature. I felt more pity and general concern from her side. But we'll see. Hopefully Gibson's life expectancy is longer than those of her previous lovers, lol.

She's been in more relationships an would be more experienced in knowing the difference between love and lust.

What has them having the potential of staying power is their shared interest in medicine and healing. He researches, she practices and is always looking for better methods.

Veronica, I must admit I never saw pity. Alexi is a bold character who I thought became attracted to Paul for who he is. She's unconventional, not ashamed of her body and wanted to share that with him. I never got the sense that she felt sorry for him.

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 694 comments I'm sure it's just a matter of preference. If Gibson were the MC of this series then I'm sure more time would've been spent developing the relationship between the two, as has been done with Sebastian and Hero. But the whole thing playing out in one book that covers only a few days, maybe a week and a half, with Alexi being unconscious or semi-conscious for part of that time, doesn't really work for me. It's a main reason why I don't read much in the romance genre. I like a slow, steady boil so when things happen quickly in one book it just doesn't have any emotional payoff to me. That said, I realize that this isn't Gibson's book and the author wanted to get Gibson and Alexi to a certain point for story reasons so I accept it for what it is. I'm sure she'll prove to be a valuable member of Sebastian's little group.

Joanna | 139 comments I hope so for Gibson, but I still don't trust her. You notice she never did answer Sebastian's question bout how her last husband died.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 2240 comments While I liked Alexi's character overall for her strength of will and resourcefulness, I am also skeptical about her motivations.

I want Paul to be happy, but I'm not sure Alexi is the one. She told so many lies and kept information secret that could have saved lives.

I also didn't like the active role she played when Sebastian was held prisoner by the French.

This is what I want to know. How much did Alexi know about what the French were going to do to the nuns and children?

Sebastian is very clear on the fact that she knew exactly what would happen and did nothing to prevent it. Unlike Sebastian who was haunted about it even though he was innocent of any wrong doing, Alexi did not appear to be as affected.

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 694 comments Yeah, I think that's a good part of why I didn't really warm up to her. It was war, I know, and horrible things happens during war but still, allowing harm to come to children is a hard thing to accept. I hope for Gibson's sake that this works out for him. He does deserve to be happy.

Me too!

I also thought that she could have been a bit more interested in finding the person responsible for her brother's death.
