The month of October. The days are getting shorter and the nights are getting longer. The leaves are falling leaving the skeletons of the trees behind. Pumpkins, sweaters, and the chilly wind blowing like a breeze across a grave. It all leads to Halloween, the holiday where all things scary come out. October is our favorite month and we want our group read to reflect all things that make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

So, please nominate the scariest read that you know. It can be from any author (as always, please don't nominate your own work). Nominations will be collected until September 25th at the stroke of midnight!

Alex Bough | 1 comments The Summer I Died by Ryan C Thomas way very vivid and kept me on the edge constantly but never really found a book that truly scared me. Hopefully someone can mention one that will....

message 3: by Anna (new)

Anna (doppiocuore) | 35 comments Dang. This is kind of hard. I can only say that two books ever really scared me and I'm pretty sure they won't be the majority's cup of tea. I'm going to have to think on it a bit and see what others come up with.

message 4: by Kieron (new)

Kieron I am going for the haunted house story and nominating Hell House
Hell House by Richard Matheson

message 5: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan 'Salem's Lot by Stephen King Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist

Both very scary

We're currently reading 'Salem's Lot for the September Group Read. So, that nixes that one, but Let The Right One certainly would be a good choice.

message 7: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Not sure we need them, but I second Let the Right One In. It's a new take on the vampire and was chilling, but also made me feel sympathy when I didn't want to. That's scary to me!

message 9: by SeraphIonna (new)

SeraphIonna | 9 comments I second Hex by Thomas Olde Heuvelt . And I would like to suggest After Midnight by Richard Laymon .

I'm going to throw a couple tension-filled wild rides into the ring.

Animosity Animosity by James Newman by James Newman

The Rain Dancers The Rain Dancers by Greg F. Gifune by Greg F. Gifune

Ghost Story is a classic in the horror genre and one book every horror fan should read. If you haven't read it, here is your chance to read it with a group. If you have seen the movie be aware that the movie in not 1/10 of what the book is.

I'm also tossing in a very sick and twisted read from Gary Braunbeck. if you have never read Braunbeck, this book is a fantastic place to start.

Ghost Story by Peter Straub Ghost Story by Peter Straub

Prodigal Blues by Gary Braunbeck Prodigal Blues by Gary A. Braunbeck

D20 | 173 comments How about The Amityville Horror by Jay Anson or a classic, Dracula by Bram Stoker

message 13: by Kieron (new)

Kieron The Damnation Game is excellent, one of my all time favourite books.

message 14: by Lena (last edited Sep 19, 2016 07:52AM) (new)

Lena I'm going for a classic next month!
Great Tales of Horror Great Tales of Horror by H.P. Lovecraft
Just bought it at B&N yesterday!

message 15: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 4 comments I will say that the ONLY book/ movie that TRULY scared me was and still is The Excorcist. That being said, I am hoping for some new suggestions that will literally keep me up at night, afraid to fall asleep alone...especially during this time of year!! Please help! :) Thank you!

message 16: by Anna (new)

Anna (doppiocuore) | 35 comments I nominate Hostage to the Devil The Possession and Exorcism of Five Contemporary Americans by Malachi Martin .

When it comes to October and Halloween I want a straight shot of nightmare fuel and that's hard to find. This wasn't one I was thinking of before but it fits the bill.

I couple of books that have been suggested do look good and I have added to my to-read list.

Vicki Willis I have had Hell House Hell House by Richard Matheson on my list for a long time. I am going to second that one.

message 22: by Christy (new)

Christy | 14 comments Let the Right One In Is such a unique vampire story! And boy, are some parts pretty sick (in a good way)....even the sexual episodes are stomach curdling! I've only read the first tiny bit, but it grabs you.....and one gigantic plus....this author knows how to write--well!

message 23: by Tristen (new)

Tristen Hopp (trisenhopp) | 1 comments I'm new here folks, but I love a good book read. Ghost Story is on my TBR, it would be fun to read it with a group.

message 24: by Chris (new)

Chris (gonetoyourhaed) | 7 comments I'd love to read Let the Right One In, and I've seen some requests for two books I've already read, Hell House and The Damnation Game, which I would gladly read again. Both are excellent!
