I am in a new book reading slump so I am rereading some of my older books. I am looking for help locating an old historical romance novel. I’ve scoured goodreads and google for hours and I can’t seem to locate it. I believe it was written by Lisa Kleypas, however, I can’t locate it.
Please bear with me while I try to describe it. I remember many bits and pieces, and I am hoping they all belong to the same book :) The book starts out with the hero in his office where he is set upon by assassins, he quickly dispatches them. I think the heroine shows up at this time too, I can’t remember. I do remember she shows up in the morning in disguise trying to barter with chickens and biscuits. It appears the hero hires orphans/street urchins to help with his establishment (I believe it is a gaming hell?) and everyone loves her biscuits! She needs help locating her brother who has disappeared (turns out he was shipped to Australia for unpaid gambling debts I think… by the hero). Her father owns a carriage making company and has developed dementia/Alzheimer’s. So she has been running the business in his place. The villain (father’s business partner?) is trying to take over the company. The heroine disguises herself as a man to deal with said villain. Somehow the heroine and her family move into the hero’s establishment for protection. Of course while living together and melting the hero’s defenses down (by giving him a kiss on the cheek every night) she’s compromised and the hero tells the father (just happens the father is having a moment of clarity when he does) and they’ll be married of course. The hero somehow buys controlling portion of the carriage making business, saving the company. and the hero gets the brother brought back to England at the end.
Ok that’s all I can remember, hopefully someone can help me :P I think google thought I was crazy trying to search “Historical Romance, heroine disguises as man, bribes hero with biscuits and chickens, carriage maker, demented father”.
