Our theme for November is a sci-fi book that features a protagonist who is handicapped.....

Jose Brox (josebrox) | 4 comments Then I propose any book in the Vorkosigan series featuring Miles (Naismith) Vorkosigan (the first one is The Warrior's Apprentice).

message 3: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Miles would NEVER consider himself handicapped!

We have already done the Vorkosigan books as a group read, so alas, they are not eligible for this theme.

Well, being handicap is probably a stretch in this science fiction classic in our society.

Norstrilia not sure if editions makes a difference, this the one I have read.

Hammered by Elizabeth Bear

Micah Sisk (micahrsisk) | 265 comments Well ... Deus Irae by Philip K. Dick and Roger Zelazny of course. Two masters of weird far out fiction team up to do a truly odd post-apocalyptic, theological/mystical journey piece. Get ready for mutants and cults and ... strange stuff.

Its not classifed as such. But it sounds weird.

Latoya Help is it a list for these types of stories? I'm new to sci fi and its tons to wade through.

Hmmm, sorry, I can't say it is. I thought I found it on a sci-fi list, but now I'm not sure. It just caught my eye and looked intriguing!

Kirsten (kmcripn) How about a classic?

Islands in the Sky by Arthur C. Clarke

In the 1954 novel Islands in the Sky by Arthur C. Clarke, for example, the commander of a space station is an amputee, having lost both his legs on an earlier mission. Yet in the zero gravity environment of the Station, Commander Doyle is “perfectly adapted to his surroundings” and “the most agile man in the Station”.

In a more recent example, in Amy Thomson’s Through Alien Eyes (1999) one character chooses to live and work in a zero gravity environment after becoming paralysed, stating that it is a place where he isn’t “reminded of all the things he couldn’t do anymore”.
