Story is about a male who must bathe in water that was purified by a godess, and if he or any in the colony he inhabits don't for three days their skin begins to flake, they think this is caused by a disease. Once someone transforms or begins to transform, they fear the water and think it is evil, they describe it as a murky brown color. I think the colony was named 'Adam'. Male has to leave colony for some reason, bring a few bags of water with him. He has a few friends, at least three and at least one of them is a girl. They might have stopped at an oasis along the way. Get to a city of the flakey-people, the diseased people living there wear a special mixture to stop their skin from irritating as much. A small girl flake-person helps them get somewhere, most likely a church. They end up in a demonic place, two of the friends were tied to a wheel and were being poked and proded, main boy and a friend head down to do something.

I think there is a second book to this one, where main boy ends up with a swave guy in leather jacket and car, but I don't remember all too much about this one.

I read this around 2014 if that helps, and I think it's targeted to teenagers.

Dichotomy Girl (dichotomygirl) | 21 comments The water / Skin disease thing is a part of Ted Dekker's The Circle Trilogy: The Complete Trilogy in One Epic Edition , There was a spin-off series directed towards young adults, that series is called the Lost Books, this sounds like maybe the one you mentioned: Infidel

The village, at the center of the middle forest, arched around the front side of the lake in which they all bathed daily to keep the disease away. Elyon’s gift, everyone said, though secretly many thought the water simply had medicinal qualities that healed the skin. But Johnis knew the truth: the waters were beyond the natural.

Kicking off his boots and dropping his tunic to the ground, he splashed water from a large basin on his torso, quickly wetting his skin. Three days without this water and any Forest Dweller would be consumed by the graying Scab disease, which cracked and grayed the skin.
