Brittany | 312 comments I prefer a romantic theme whether it be paranormal, contemporary, historical, science fiction, fantasy, etc. I'll read it all I just am a sucker for a love story. Anywho I love to laugh while I read and really enjoy witty banter, jokes and humor in a story as long as it doesn't feel contrived. A good example I can think of is in Forbidden Forest Forest gives a 'Team Jacob' sweatshirt to vampire prince Syrus to wear and can't stop herself from chuckling. He of course demands to know what is so funny and she explains twilight to him and that Jacob is a werewolf. He becomes indignant and says something along the lines of 'do you mean to tell me I am wearing werewolf-supporting apparel?" Or Aria and William's sibling banter in the Captured series by Erica Stevens. 'I'm older' William says. 'By an hour!' Aria says. 'And a blissfully quiet hour it was.' William sighs, Aria punches his arm.
You get the idea...or maybe not. Reading back those don't sound funny at all...I guess you have to read the books, but I'd appreciate any suggestions. Just a note: I use an iPad, so I am only able to download books from ibooks, not Amazon.
Thanks in advance!

Juels | 3312 comments Not sure what kind of iPad you have, but my daughter was able to download the Kindle app on her iPad and uses it for Amazon downloads. The Kindle app was free.

As to your request, I often find humor in books by Johanna Lindsey, Julie Garwood, and Alice Clayton.

message 3: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 312 comments I've heard of the kindle app, thanks...I just am loyal to ibooks. I should have worded that better, sorry.
And thank you for the suggestions. I've read everything Julie Garwood has published - love her. I will definitely check out Lindsey and Clayton. Thank you!

Hum, not sure how many of Georgette Heyer's books are available in electronic format (can you download from Guttenburg? If so, you might want to check there for her works.) Almost all of her books have the romance with witty banter and humour.

B&N also has a Nook app (which I like a bit better than the Kindle app) but frankly, neither are that great, in my opinion. They have too many limitations on them, and can get unwieldy if you have a LOT of books (which I do--something on the order of 5k between the 2 apps.)

Have you also checked out: Lynsay Sands, G.A. Aiken, and Katie MacAlister?

message 5: by Erica (new)

Erica Barrios | 0 comments Have you tried the Neighbor from Hell series?
This is the first book
Playing for Keeps (Neighbor from Hell, #1) by R.L. Mathewson
For fantasy maybe the Darkness series....
Darkness of Light (Darkness, #1) by Stacey Marie Brown
Both series had me laughing out loud at points!

message 6: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 312 comments Thank you Ann! Georgette Heyer's books look very familiar. I used to borrow books from my grandmother years ago and read a ton of historical romances, but didn't keep a list and unfortunately it was before I discovered the wonder that is goodreads.
I haven't read any of those other authors. Aiken will be going on my short list - just the few quotes I read on the profile page made me laugh out loud. Thanks, again!

And thank you Erica! I actually have Darkness of Light downloaded, I just haven't gotten to it yet. I'll read that next.
The description for Neighbor from Hell sounds good, too. Thank you. I've read a few too many emotional books in a row...they were great books, but I need a laugh break in between! :)

Oh, golly, how did I forget Nina Bangs? The first of her books I read was A Taste of Darkness, which I found at a brick and mortar store and had to have after I read the back of the book. This is the section that got me to decide that I had to have it, even if it was a horrible story, just for the snark displayed on the back.

Werewolves--furry pains in the butt. Werecats--sneaky whisker-twitching manipulators. Reinn hated them all. But most of all, he hated his job. Guardian of the Blood. What a crock.

Although I'm going to say--it really was better than I had expected. She has a couple of series that are all snarky and full of fun. Well, when you consider that one of her characters who appears in many of the books is named Sparkle Stardust, I mean, what do you expect, right? Sparkle is kind of a matchmaker from he** type character. She calls herself a Cosmic Troublemaker and she always wants to put together 2 people that have nothing in common and that no one else can even SEE as a couple. Vampires and werewolves and Cosmic Troublemakers, oh my. :o)

Lyz (booknerdlife) | 53 comments The whole Bewitch and Bewildered series by Alanea Alder the first book is hallarious My Commander

message 9: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 312 comments Ann, if I read that description, I would have brought it home, too! I'll check it out. Thanks!
Thanks booknerdlife! I looked My Commander up and the description sounds funny. Meddlesome matchmaking mamas are my cup of tea. Thanks!

oh man, Lyndsay sands! her books have me cracking up, also, Sherilyn Kenyon has what you're looking for as well :)

Gnome Claire *Wishes she was as cool as Gnome Ann* | 14 comments Definitely georgette heyer, I love those books, all the characters are hilarious. I don't think they're out of copyright yet but I think they'll be available as ebooks or from your library.

MJ | 1613 comments Playing for Keeps, series... As Erica said.
Hooked on the Game, Stirling series, they are all good, but a few books in and they get hilarious watch the characters go at each other in prank wars.
Holding Out, series, but I've only read this one... several times... snark city
Shooter, series. Lots of banter.
Her Best Match, maybe?

Brittany | 312 comments Awesome! Thank you everybody! Laughter really is the best medicine. :)

P.S. If anyone is interested the Hooked on the Game 4 book series bundle is on sale on ibooks for only $0.99! (I feel like an infomercial)

Lol, that series is worth an infomercial ;)

Melissa Matthews I have found the Charley Davidson series, first book: First Grave on the Right very amusing. This series is up to about ten or eleven now. I particularly love the tee shirt sayings at the start of each chapter.

Sharni (sharnibee) | 64 comments Anything by Katie MacAlister, she has several series going - contemporary, paranormal, historical - my favourite being Improper English

message 17: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 312 comments Thank you Mellisa and Sharni! I'll check them out.

MJ: I realized only 1 page in that I have read Hooked on the game before, but it wasn't in my goodreads book list. Glad I got to re-read it and have the next few books in the series now, too. Thanks!

Erica: I read Darkness of Light a few days ago and couldn't put it down. I did not see that ending coming! I thought Ember would find a way to avoid that. Wow.

message 18: by Mrsbooks (new)

Mrsbooks | 267 comments I thought Neanderthal Seeks Human was hilarious.

Flat-Out Love was witty and amusing but not hilarious.

Attachments was really funny but disappointed me romance wise.

Brittany | 312 comments Thank you, Mrsbooks!

message 20: by Mrsbooks (new)

Mrsbooks | 267 comments No prob. I also just finished A Week to Be Wicked today and thought it was marvellous. The banter was clever and laughable.

message 21: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 312 comments I haven't read that one, but I like Tessa Dare. She ranks right up there with Mary Balogh and Julie Garwood in my opinion.

Joseph (bluemanticore) | 433 comments Molly Harper is one author who always makes me laugh. Her Jane Jameson series is a riot! First book is Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs.

message 23: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 312 comments How have I not heard of Molly Harper before now? I read the description for Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs and just that little bit had me chuckling. Thanks for the suggestion, I'm looking forward to reading her work.

message 24: by Krazykiwi (new)

Krazykiwi | 152 comments The Kate Daniels series is pretty funny, if you like some PN up in your R, so to speak. Kate tends to hit the gas on her mouth before engaging the gears which is often amusing, and many of the other characters are snark central.

Magic Bites is the first book.

Thank you, I'll check it out. And at the risk of sounding stupid, what does PN up in your R stand for?

message 26: by Krazykiwi (new)

Krazykiwi | 152 comments PNR = Paranormal romance. I wasn't sure how far over into Fantasyland you wanted to go.

And I LOVE paranormal romance! The more I can suspend reality in my head the better in my opinion.

Holy guacamole, Batman! Thank you for taking the time to put together that list, LJF. I really appreciate it! And I think I've only read one or two from that selection, so you gave me a lot of new books to look into. Thank you!

message 31: by Brittany (new)

What, if any, that were suggested, are you reading now?

message 33: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 312 comments I should probably make a checklist to keep track, but I've read so far:
Darkness of Light was pretty good. Ended on a crazy cliffhanger.
The Sterling Shore Series books 1-4. I loved this series. Very well-written, tons of banter and familial joshing and ribbing.
Holding Out (some funny parts, but over-the-top. I found it ridiculous and just poorly written, unfortunately)
And I just finished a few minutes ago Treasured Secrets also by C.M. Owens (Sterling Shores author)
I'm really enjoying the writing of C.M. Owens and I have another book already downloaded called Property of Dex (linking won't speak to me right now for some reason), so I'll read that next. I tend to binge read authors when I find a goodie.

Sophie (BlameChocolate) *on hiatus* (blamechocolate) | 94 comments I highly recommend Angelfall. The heroine and love interest are constantly bickering and it's just adorable.

You could also try Meg Cabot's books. They're chick lit but they're quite entertaining and witty. Two great examples of this dynamic are Victoria and the Rogue and Nicola and the Viscount.

Hope it helps :)

message 36: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 312 comments Angelfall sounds really good. I'll have to check my library for it. I tried to get the ebook version, but it only comes in Polish, German, Spanish and French.
I've heard of Meg Cabot, but haven't read her yet, so I'll have to check one books out, too.
Thank you for the suggestions!

So sorry, i misstyped. The problem with forever and lets get lost are contemporary romance not paranormal/fantasy, and when i said anything by alex flinn, i meant any fantasy by alex flinn. She has also written some contemporary realistic fiction which i haven't read, which doesn't seem very good (again, haven't read it, so can't be sure).

Yes! I loved pride and prejudice and also sense and sensibility.

Love this line: 'Which of these painted peacocks is our Mr. Bingley?'

How about this dialogue(I'm not sure of the exact words):
"Younger sons are not able to marry who they like."
"Unless they like women of fortune, you mean."
"Men are more likely to fall for a lady's face than for her purse."
"Then all women should be lovely, and all men rich!"
"Even that should not be sufficient."

I love Jane Austen, but I've only read Pride and Prejudice and am in the middle of Emma. Now there's a book with lots of witty romantic banter!

message 42: by Michele (new)

Michele | 2488 comments Brittany wrote: "Love this line: 'Which of these painted peacocks is our Mr. Bingley?' "

And of course there is the classic opening line: "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife."

message 48: by Ariel (new)

Ariel | 4 comments A great book that I just recently read is Stalking Jack the Ripper, The genre is historical fiction, and I love the banter between Audrey Rose and Thomas, they kind of give off a Watson and Holmes vibe. It's about a girl who enjoys forensic science, and gets sucked into the Jack the Ripper cases, it's really entertaining and enjoyable if you like these kind of books.

message 49: by Brittany (new)

Brittany | 312 comments Thank you, Ariel, I'll check it out.

I also just finished reading Until November by Aurora Rose Reynolds that I found to have a lot of humor if anyone is interested.

C. | 217 comments One of my favorites~ The Peacemaker (Men of the Saddle #1) by Lori Copeland

HILARIOUS read, heroine drives the hero crazy! This was a laugh out loud funny read. Yes, it is a little far-fetched in places, but I was having too much fun reading it to let it bother me!

I really enjoyed when it gave the first-person POV of the heroine Miss Wynne Elliot, and I found myself really getting into the emotions she was feeling, like when she felt she had to leave the ranch and was walking to town despite getting a painful blister from her button-top shoes, and Cole rode past her "like I was a fence post"! Believe me I entertained thoughts of her killing him, too!

I enjoyed the way she drove him crazy and was not a bit afraid to stand up to him.

I had a really fun time reading this one, and the character development was superb.
