I will watch The Innocents this weekend because I like old movies and because, at my age, it may not be wise to scare myself silly. :)

Growing up with an older cousin who loves watching horror, I was pretty tormented whenever I do not get first dibs on the TV remote.

I asked friends/housemates to watch The Boy with me tonight. Can't watch it alone. Duwag din ako. Haha!

Meliza, saw 'The Boy' months ago. didnt like it @ all coz i find it slow & when the twist came up i didn't care for the main characters anymore. gusto ko rin ang mga Horror movies pero hindi ito nakakatakot para sakin.

I watched Mulholland Drive (David Lynch). Okay, it's not exactly a horror film but I went with it because it's on this list and they make a pretty good argument on why it's there. How was it for me? Well, I'm not a fan of horror movies because I suppose I get easily scared (traumatized by the Halloween specials of Magandang Gabi Bayan when I was a kid). But if I rationalize it, most of the horror films I've seen are, I think, merely made for the thrills (again, traumatized by the B horror movies that my parents used to rent at VHS stores).

But this one is really something. The tone set by the first 15 minutes pervades the entirety of the film. There's a scene in there that almost made me piss in my pants. I won't spoil it but I had this same reaction:

After finishing it, there's this urge to tie up all the very loose ends. I was like, what the hell just happened there?? What is it really about? You think you understand it (playing detective and all that), but your knowledge of its plot is upended when the last quarter starts to roll. It's the kind of movie that demands its audience to come up with their own interpretations of it. Too many metaphors were presented so I think it is not suitable for a 2AM viewing because you'll end up thinking about it until 6AM.

Great film. I gave it 4-stars. It's also on BFI's top 50 greatest films of all time. So if you feel like watching an artsy and critically acclaimed film, go to Mulholland Drive.

But the ending! Paano pumasa yon sa censors in 1961? :D

Anyway, I was so disappointed I had to watch another horror movie (so much for scaring myself silly...) I just watched The Babadook and I liked it a lot.

I really don't like blood and gore in horror movies. I prefer being made uneasy psychologically so this fit the bill quite nicely. Very good acting from mother and son. I couldn't stop watching and now I'm tired. lol

I watched The Evil Dead 1981 (Sam Raimi) yesterday and it's the campy kind of horror. It's not at all terrifying but it's super gross. Much of the "horror" of the movie relies on jump scares, lots of blood, and yucky gore. But to its credit, the special effects is pretty good for a low budget movie. There are some really absolutely disgusting scenes! And the camera work serves the film well, there are scanning shots, dutch angles, close-ups, queasy cams, and POV changes, all of them help create a tense atmosphere.

Had this been less so, in terms of technical details, I think this movie would be terrible because the plot is typical and the characters are paper thin. There is nothing about these kids, save for them being your typical horror movie characters, the kind stupid enough to investigate noises in the woods...with no weapons, in nothing but fluffy slippers, underwear and a sleeping robe. But the protagonist Bruce Campbell (even though his acting leaves much to be desired here, save for a dramatic scene involving his girlfriend who has been possesed and needs to be dismembered) is pretty cute! He's like Matt Dillon and Josh Brolin combined. Hahahaha. :) (hide spoiler)]

Daughter elected that we watch The Purge, last Saturday, and I gave in because it said "dystopian horror" on the description. Well into the movie, I realized that it was horrifying, indeed, but not a horror movie in terms of ghost and supernatural beings. Although, I did like the hackings, the fight scenes, and the thrill of it all. (view spoiler)[ See? I do have a criminal tendency. My first job was working in HR for a multi-national electronics firm, and I get to interview people applying for a job in the production line. There was this one applicant whose surname was Balutite. When I read the name, I read it as *Balu-tight (sounds like Loctite), because I know how it would sound in Tagalog. But the applicant promptly corrected me and pronounced the name in syllables, "BA-LU-TI-TE po ma'am." I have to get out of the room and laugh it out because I if hold it in it's either snot or fart for me.

I wasn't paying much attention, except last Friday. The house in front of us was a having a raucous drinking and karaoke. I sooo want to shut them up with a good spray from our gardening hose. (hide spoiler)]

My horror icon, Chucky. The movie wasn't scary but we had a doll who is a female version of Chucky who scared me shitless after seeing the first Child's Play film. I remember being torn between taking good care of the doll so it won't kill me and my family or throwing it away or locking it real good in a closet. Parents chose to give it away after my younger sister begged them to (with matching iyak pa). :D

(view spoiler)[ This weekend, I watched the whole first season of American Horror Story. Does this count? Definitely longer than a movie, what with all 12 episodes. I liked it! Not too scary, for me, but it was enjoyable. For some reason, I find the loony character Tate Langdon (played by Evan Peters) to be sort of attractive. Haha! I'm on to the second season, and I think the first one is better. (hide spoiler)]

Elaine and I were planning to see Blair Witch at the cinema last weekend but unfortunately, it was already out of the theaters. We saw Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children instead. It's not exactly horror but it has elements of it borrowed from the horror genre. I also watched 2 episodes of the second season of Penny Dreadful. :)

(view spoiler)[Poltergeist (1982) - I had nightmares every night after watching that movie! The reason why I don't watch horror movies anymore.

Then, The Sixth Sense was the first horror movie I watched after Poltergeist. Again, I had nightmares after watching it kahit matanda na ako by then. But I don't regret watching it. It was a really good movie. (hide spoiler)]

The most unforgettable job interview I had was when I was applying for work in a medium-sized firm in Ortigas. One of the partners interviewed me and asked me why I wanted to be in litigation. I had just passed the bar so I was feeling excited and kinda proud of myself. So I said something like, I was meant to be here, and I know I can do great things, blah blah blah. He asked me if I knew there was no money in litigation, and I said of course there was money! And then he said something like, "Nah, there's none. And you know what, I'm not gonna touch you with a ten-foot pole if you were the last associate on earth!" BOOM. Harsh. Bastos lang. Hmp.

Best Hostel for me is Jugendgaestehaus in St. Gilgen, Salzburg. It's actually one of the cheapest hostels in Salzburg, but they have a great view with the lake and mountains behind it. (view spoiler)[I did not pay for any of these, btw. (hide spoiler)] They serve in buffet, and have rooms for 4 ensuite. The place feels more like a dorm. It is situated at the city center, so you don't have to walk much, quick access to the tram and cable rides. And the best part is... they check-in and out at 5pm. No rush, baby!

A church mate, now my kumare. She's not Filipino, but grew up here in the Philippines. Inaanak ko both of her kids, they call me Mama Loi, instead of Ninang. And my daughter calls my friend Mama too.
No, I have not met anyone with the Shining ...yet.

Best hotel experience I've had is Disneyland Hotel! Hehe. Seriously, the kid in me loved it. Everything was Disney-themed (even the toiletries and the bath stool), the elevator talks a la Mickey Mouse, and you get to meet the Disney gang while having breakfast! :) But for the grown-up hotel I'd have to say Discovery Country Suites in Tagaytay. It's a boutique hotel and we love coming back here on special occasions for some R&R.

Chapter 10 - Hallorann
Yes I have. But I haven't met anyone yet with the Shining. At least, none that I know of.

Chapter 11 - The Shining
I think so. I believe that there's evil, demons, and such. I believe in a God and angels. I think it also makes sense that I'd believe that there could be someone who could possess this gift. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[Corregidor Inn. If you're taking the Corregidor Cruise, just take the day tour, not the overnight one unless you're a thrill seeker. Corregidor is said to be haunted by soldiers who died during the said war. One such reportedly haunted location on the island is the Malinta Tunnel, which witnessed the deaths of many soldiers.

Diplomat Hotel in Baguio [closed]. It is one of the most haunted abandoned hotels in the world. (hide spoiler)]

1. My worst job interview was with Aegis PeopleSupport in Baguio. The interviewer asked me how long did I intend to stay with the company, to which I answered maybe six months. She asked why. I answered I had plans of moving to Manila soon but I wasn't just sure when, then she said, well, if you're feeling iffy about staying here, I also feel iffy about hiring you. Needless to say, I didn't get the job.

A month later, I applied again because my freelance writing job wasn't doing well (mainly due to internet issues; Baguio suffered from connectivity issues during the typhoon season). And what do you know? It was the same interviewer, and I think she remembered me well enough to only ask me one question for that interview. I told her that I changed my plans, that I intended to settle down in Baguio.

Of course that was a lie. It got me the job. I lasted for four months until my big move.

2. I'm reading the e-book because me don't like single audiobook files (a choosy beggar, lol. And by the way, the e-book has too many typos!). I felt that oh, Danny has ESP, this might probably be horrifying on a psychological level despite having images of a young and menacing Jack Nicholson in my head whenever I read this.

3. Lately, I'm scared of going to sleep because last week, I experienced sleep paralysis (i.e. bangungot?). It felt like your soul was being jerked off your body while your desperately holding on lest you die. And that's what I usually think before going to sleep: what if I die in my sleep? I looked up what sleep paralysis is related to. I wasn't surprised at what I found out. I was also advised by our resident doctor to see a neurologist, but why aren't neurologists accepting any HMO card? It was already explained to us by our HR but I don't care to understand.

1. My best hotel experience is in Radisson Blu - Cebu. Disclaimer: my friend paid for it and for my plane tix and for the tour. I just had to bring myself. It was the best because it's a 5-star hotel and I was there for free.

2. I don't know. I'm usually suspicious lol. I haven't been meeting new people lately and I can't remember if I was initially comfortable with the people I like now.

3. I want to believe I have it haha but unfortunately, I don't think so. When I was a teen, I tried to develop my third eye by hanging out with the neighborhood fortune teller (this answers the other question from #2) but promptly forgot about it when the things that she predicted for me within seven years didn't come true. Also got this cartomancy book with cards that have Tarot counterparts given to me by my cousin. She bought it at NBS but she couldn't make any sense out of it so she gave it to me. I messed with those cards for a bit but it was, in hindsight, mostly general precaution about the situation I was trying to make predictions for. It was fun though. But I didn't answer the question, did I? I think there may be people who have the shining. I don't have proof to back this up. It's just something I want to believe in.

The Bellevue-Stratford in Philadelphia - I remember listening to an episode of 99PI (mind you, not the Pinoy expletive) about this hotel that "found itself at the epicenter of a series of mysterious deaths that terrified the country and stumped everyone trying to find answers." Pretty scary, but since this is 99% Invisible, design and architecture solved the problem.

2. Hotel Provincial in New Orleans - "A former soldier supposedly haunts the grounds of the Provincial. Guests have reported everything from doors opening and closing to hearing voices and footsteps when no one else was around. Several séances have been held in the hotel over the years, many of which produced ghostly visions and recorded audio of things like, "Tell Dianne I have to go." A female guest reported being pulled from her bed by a hand and dragged across the room while she kicked and screamed. Another conventioneer claims to have seen the soldier fully materialize in the closet, complete with decorated uniform, before disappearing into thin air."

1. Oatlands Park Hotel in Surrey
"The Welsh rugby team feared its lodgings here were haunted last Rugby World Cup, according to reports. An apparition is said to stalk the Tudor Wing of the 19th century hotel that was built on the site of a 16th century palace that Henry VIII constructed for his new Queen, Anne of Cleves. The ghost is a woman of common descent, said by hotel staff to be of a perfectly friendly disposition. The "grey lady" legend is based on a death of a maid who threw herself from the bell tower after a lovers' quarrel supposedly landing next to room 1313 where guests complain of unexplained temperature changes."

2. Karosta Prison Hostel, Latvia
"In the 20th century, Karosta Prison was used as a Nazi and Soviet military prison. It's no wonder the transformed prison-themed hotel is said to experience paranormal activity as thousands of prisoners allegedly died on site. If staying in the hotel and being treated like a prisoner isn't enough, the staff will tell guests stories about lightbulbs that unscrew from their sockets, doors that open by themselves and the ghost of a woman who hanged herself that wanders the corridors."

Got these from this source, which lists Stanley Hotel in Colorado, the hotel that inspired Stephen King to write "The Shining," as the #1 most haunted hotel in the world. Oatlands is second while Karosta is the third.

2. The audio definitely ups the creepy factor by miles. But I was chill during that "Danee sing songy" part. I think when it doesn't have any visuals, I find them less terrifying.

1. Universal Port, Osaka. Because I like my toilets fancy. :)

2. Well, I don't meet a whole lotta people, really. But yes, I can say there is this one person, whom when I met for the first time, felt immediately comfortable with. And I thank my lucky stars for having met her. About people with the shining, I once had a yaya who said she could see things. But I don't know if she was just pulling leg, because I was a bratty kid. Haha. And I do know of another person, who can hear things inside his head, and had occassionaly dreamed, what he says are prophetic dreams. But I think some, if not most, of them didn't come true, except for one incident.

Chapter 11 - The Shining
Q: Some people say The Shining, some say Paranoia Schizoprenia. What do I say? I don't know. I have not yet witnessed anything of the sort, first hand. But here's the deal, if I do, I feel like I am the type of person inclined to believe it, if it so happens. (hide spoiler)]

"Dawn Bark, 51, was visiting this top London hotel with her hubby when she took a couple of snaps of herself in the powder room mirror.

But looking back over her snaps this year, she spotted a bone-chilling change between pictures taken seconds apart.

My father was never around much when I was a child. Too busy making money. Plus he had a clear favorite amongst us siblings (and it wasn't me! (Bitter ba?!). But he has passed away at a rather early age and I still miss him sometimes. (hide spoiler)]

I think it's only natural that sometimes, there's a hint of jealousy between the parents, especially if the child seems to favor one over the other. But it's a passing feeling. It doesn't linger. If it does, there's a problem. Haha.

Chapter 19 - Outside 217
When I was a kid, I was most afraid of hands that would grab at my feet from under my bed. I always imagine that each time I would sit on my bed, something or someone would grab my ankles so I never sit on my bed with my feet dangling on the side.
The first curse/taboo word I learned was (view spoiler)["ukininam" (hide spoiler)] which is Ilocano for P.I. haha. I learned it because my mother is Ilocana and she always cursed. Heh.

As an adult, I am now most scared about not living long enough to see my child grow up. But if you mean the supernatural, I don't like zombies. Ugh.
My father's flaw was his being a mild alcoholic. I say mild because although he occasionally came home drunk, it never got to the point that he hurt any of us. Or anyone else, that we knew of.
