Book: The Other Side of Gemini by LG McCann
Read: Oct. 23 - Oct. 24
I loved the two main characters, Lindsay and Sylvia. The book's plot and concepts were very realistic to me. I liked how even though they have been in a tough place and practically made a grave for themselves, they were still able to get back up. That they were able to resolve their major problems and move on.

Read: October 24-26
Rating: 4 stars
Review: This was a nice young adult novel. I love stories about boarding schools and this one was a vampire boarding school. In this world, vampires are not undead but are born and called Moroi. They have magic, which they use to help others. There enemies are the Strigoi, who are Moroi who kill and turn undead. Moroi are defended by dhampirs, half Moroi-half humans with fast reflexes, lots of strength and a need to keep the Moroi alive. Lissa is a Moroi princess and Rose is her dhampir best friend. They have a secret that they can't tell anyone about and someone is torturing Lissa about that secret. It is up to Rose to find out who that is and put a stop to it. I look forward to seeing how these characters progress and what happens after graduation. I will definitely be continuing this series.

Review: Two years ago, Zan's son, Matthew, was kidnapped. Now someone has hacked into her accounts and is charging large purchases to her name. New evidence has come to life that implicates her in the kidnapping of her son. Who is trying to ruin her life and why? Clark is always good for a suspenseful novel that keeps you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next, with the safety net of knowing there will be a happy ending. I always enjoy reading a MHC novel and this one was no exception.

Book: Semi-Charmed- Isabel Jordan
Read: November 14-15
Rating: 3 stars
Review: This was a quick entertaining read about a psychic who falls in love with a psychopathic vampire slayer. Riddick doesn't know what to make of Harper and her love of life but once he spends time with her, he becomes obsessed with her and doesn't understand these feelings he has. To top it off, a vampire is trying to kill her. I liked watching the two find each other and learn to trust each other. There was a lot of snark. I will be continuing this series.

Book: Escorting the Billionaire by Leigh James
Read: December 7-10
Rating: 4 stars
Review: This book is about James, a billionaire, who hires an escort to act as his girlfriend for his brother's wedding. It felt realistic to me, all of the problems that they encountered, and it had good flow. I thought it was nicely written though there were some plot holes. But I liked it all in all.

Book: Ink and Bone- Rachel Caine- 12/14/16
Review: This is the first book in the Great Library series. The Great Library of Alexandria was not ransacked and now the Library is a power in the world. It is illegal to own books, all books belong to the Library and are read electronically. Jess comes from a family of book smugglers and his father gets him into the Library's training program to act as a spy and thief. Jess loves books and is initially excited but during his training, he starts to see a whole different side of the Library. I enjoyed the characters of Jess, Wolfe and Morgan. I look forward to seeing where these characters go next. I will be continuing this series.

She has completed her time at Quantico, and is now on her on the job training probi year. She and her familiar, Fergus, work with Jack to solve magical crimes. This book takes us through 3 of Agatha's first magical crimes with Jack. They were entertaining. I look forward to seeing what trouble Agatha gets into in the future.

Book: Justice Buried by Hillary Thompson
Rate: 4 stars
Review: The concept of the setting is very interesting, a world where astrology and zodiacs are taken very seriously and incorporated in our everyday lives, like in personality, friendships, and marriage. It was all quite fascinating to read, and I liked it in general. But I didn't like the last parts because here, I didn't like Astrea anymore. She's all over the place, and switches between two guys. And I kind of got bored there, after they got out of Asphodel.

Another good Mary Higgins Clark thriller. Susan has a radio show and she talks about an unsolved case of a women who disappeared on a cruise. A women calls in and reports that she has souvenirs from a man who tried to get her off the cruise. The next day, she is hit by a bus and ends up in a coma. Susan works hard to solve the mystery. At the end of the book, the killer is arrested.

Book: Dying for a Living by Kory Shrum
Rating: 4 stars
Review: I started this book without any expectations for it, but it definitely surprised me and I was glad I picked it up. The MC Jesse was very witty, and I enjoyed reading her dialogue. She has this gene in her that allows her to "resurrect" after dying and also to replace other people who are nearly dead, which leads to her being a death replacement agent where they get paid to replace people who are going to die. I found this concept very interesting, which made the book more appealing to me.

Book: Kitty and the Midnight Hour- Carrie Vaughn- 1/5/17
Review: 4 stars (really 3.5)
This is the first book in the Kitty Norville series. I enjoyed the main storyline but I disliked Kitty's interactions with her pack alpha. The alpha shouldn't be a bully. I did like how she eventually became more confident and stood up for herself, though I regret what it cost her. I loved the idea of a late night radio show about supernaturals. I look forward to seeing what Kitty does next. For the task, there were multiple werewolf fights in this book (Kitty and Zan, TJ and Zan, Kitty and James, Kitty and Carl, Kitty and Meg, TJ and Carl)

I really don't like Water Works because I normally don't cry when reading books. Only rarely. I would think that I'd have a hard time with that if I ever landed there.

Book: And I Darken by Kiersten White
Rating: 4 stars
Review: I really liked the somehow reality of things, that not everything is black and white, and that royalty doesn't mean no hardships because they have the biggest burden of them all. The world and the characters are actually kind of twisted, which made me like them more.
One problem I had was how they act and talk modern sometimes, which I've seen a lot of people notice too. They would act like people in those years, and then go modern. (But I can deal with that.)I'll be waiting for the sequel, but I'm not particularly that attached to the series like I've been with some other series.

Task: Read a book that makes you cry.
Book: One Kick- Chelsea Cain- 1/15/17
Review: 4 stars
I greatly enjoyed this book. Kit (Kick) Lannigan was kidnapped as a 6 year old child. She was held by her kidnapper for 5 years. When she is finally rescued, she spends years trying to get her life back together. Now at age 21, she spends her time trying to find kidnapped kids. This time, she joins ex-mercenary, now philanthropist John Bishop to find a missing boy. The author's portrayal of Kick, who tries to keep control of her life, is very believable. I hope book 2 gets published soon. For the task, Kick's dog is killed when her foster brother is attacked and gutted. This was very sad, because looking for this dog was how Kit got kidnapped in the first place.

Book: All Around the Town- Mary Higgins Clark- 1/21/17

I always enjoy Mary Higgins Clark. This book was no exception. Laurie was kidnapped when she was 4 years old. When she is rescued at age 6, she remembers nothing that happened to her over the past 2 years. Now age 21, her parents are killed in a car accident and she starts acting differently. Then her professor, Allan Grant, is killed and she is arrested and charged with his murder. Can her lawyer sister help her find out what really happened?

Review: The book was really interesting, and I just loved it. The premise was quite different and the plot was amazing. I also loved most of the characters, even Maven at first. And the ending just made me want to throw the book at the wall. It was so unexpected, but made sense as well.

Book: Abby Cooper, Psychic Eye- Victoria Laurie- 2/23/17
Review: 4 stars
Abby Cooper is a gifted psychic. She is able to see details about people in pictures in her mind. She can also tell when people are lying. She makes her living doing readings for people. She gives a reading to Allison Pierce, who later ends up dead. Feeling guilty because she thinks her reading helped lead to Allison's death, Abby works with police detective Dutch Rivers to solve Allison's murder. I enjoyed this light weight cozy mystery and look forward to continuing the series.

Book: The Vault of Mysteries: Marshyl Stories Book I- Toby Neighbors- 3/20/17
Review: 3 stars
Dex and Kyp are orphan teens living on the streets. One day, wizards have a duel in the village and a Marshyl comes to stop them. He is injured during the duel and Dex and Kyp take him back to the Marshyl guild. They are then invited to join the Marshyl services. Marshyl training is rough. This is somewhat of a coming of age story for teenage boys. It had a simplistic plot and things came too easily for the boys but I enjoyed the story anyway. I hope there will be more books in this series.
This is book 1 of 2 for purchasing the property.

Book: The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot
Rating: 3 stars
Review: It honestly wasn't that bad, but when compared to the movie, well... The main character in the book had an awful personality, who always complains about Algebra and her mother dating her Algebra teacher. She sounded spoiled to me since she made it out like those were the most disastrous things in the world. But eventually, I'd grown to like her by the end of the book and I would want to continue on with the series.

Roll Dice
Monopoly Rules
• You do not need to wait for the other player to finish reading before you take your next turn. As soon as you're done reading, go ahead and roll.
• Each property is represented by a shelf. For each grouping of shelves/properties you would read a certain amount of books from that shelf. Once you finish the amount of books you would then “Own” that shelf.
• If you land on an “owned” shelf you would have to read a certain amount of books above what the owner had to read.
• If one person “owns” all of the books in a group (think Mediterranean and Baltic) and another player lands on their properties they would be able to recommend at least one of the books that the player has to read.
• Utilities – For the Electric Company – Read a book where the characters have electric chemistry. For Water Works – Read a book that makes you cry. Books have to be 150 pages or more.
• If a player lands on an “Owned” utility, then the owner will recommend a book with electric chemistry or that makes them cry.
• Railroads – For Reading Railroad – Read whatever you want. For Pennsylvania Railroad – Read a book set in Pennsylvania. For B&O Railroad – Read a book that someone else thought stunk. For Short Line – Read a novella. Page minimum 150 for all but Short Line. 25 page minimum for the novella.
• If a player lands on an “owned” railroad, the owner will recommend a book for that specific railroad.
• Chance and Community Chest – there are 12 cards for each. If a player lands on one of those spots they will roll the dice a second time and then would “pull” the corresponding card and do whatever it says on the card. Once a card is used, it will be out of play unless needed to finish the game. Books for this would need to be at least 150 pages.
• Being in Jail – To get out of jail you would need to have one of the get out of jail free cards, roll doubles on one of your next three turns or read a book where a character is arrested or has been in jail. Books for this would need to be 150 pages or more.
• Just Visiting – Read a novella of your choice, 50 page minimum
• Free Parking – Read any book 100 pages or more
• Go – Read any book of 200 pages or more
• Luxury Tax/Income Tax – Read a book with a rich character, a really poor character or someone that works in a bank. 150 pages or more
• Each roll, you'll post your starting spot, the roll and your new spot on the board.
• When you finish your book you'll post the spot your on, book name, rating, when it was finished and a short review of the book. If you were supposed to read a book that had a specific element (water works utility, book that made you cry), then please mention that in the review.
• Re-reads are allowed.
