A.J. Blakemont (blakemont) | 4 comments "Moon Called" was an enjoyable read. Mercy is an interesting and likable protagonist. I appreciated her intelligence and her ability to empathize with others. The plot is not particularly original for an UF novel, but the world building is solid. I also liked the way Patricia Briggs tackled issues such as women's rights and homophobia. I would definitely recommend this book.

Jennifer | 317 comments I loved that she wasn't a werewolf, it's nice to read about a different supernatural for a change.

Agreed, I loved the world building and how it including all sorts of different paranormal races. Mercy is the first (view spoiler) that I've ever read about, especially in a main characters role.

Myst | 108 comments I don't recall what series it was, but I have come across a coyote shifter since reading this series.

Mercy's heritage is actually quite interesting and unique.

LKH had a fox shifter named Gil, but he dropped off the map a long time ago. (Probably ran far far away from St. Louis and Anita's harem.)

Holly | 13 comments Let's clarify that I truly like this series - i read fantasy. But I just read Moon Called again with hopes of recommending it for my non-fantasy book club to try to hook them into fantasy. My problems with the first book is....too many characters/races, too much 'world' building. Let me clarify...we have vampires, werewolves, witches, coyote shifter, oh and let's not forget Zee of the Fae. Did I miss any? Anyway, for a nonfantasy reader (again i was searching for a "regular" book club recommendation) I found this book to be a bit daunting for a beginner. I figure this review might spark some rebuttal. Be kind - i love this series but in my opinion it's a daunting introduction to the world of urban fantasy.

Myst: I'm really hoping the books explore Mercy's heritage, from what I could tell from the book there aren't very many other types of shifters other than werewolves so I would love to see how coyote shifters came to be.

Holly: While I happen to love the world-building, that may in part be because my first series by Briggs was her Alpha & Omega series. I already knew about some, if not all, of the races so it wasn't a big info-dump for me. But I can see how it could be daunting to a non-fantasy reader, hopefully it explains things bit more further along in the books for those readers.

A.J. Blakemont (blakemont) | 4 comments I think the most interesting aspect of this fictional universe is the way all those paranormal species interact with one another. Although in general they prefer to live in isolation, their leaders understand that this situation cannot last. Some species decided to reveal their existence to the world, while others prefer to remain hidden. So the politics between various factions tend to be complex, and that contributes to the complexity of the plot.

Mercy certainly doesn't have much competition from other coyote shifters. But it's always possible another could be around somewhere.

Hmm, after the Mercy series is done, should there be a comparison between Mercy and Jane? Both are native american heroines who are able to shape shift.

Jane? What's her series called?

Mercy is not fae, but what her family history is, is a twist unlike most other stories who seem to recycle the same old same old.
