I finished The Young Unicorns by Madeleine L'Engle. I didn't like it, and I have read and enjoyed many of her other books.

I'm working on finishing Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince for now, and plan to follow that with Dracula.

Rosemarie, I did not like the books in the Austen series by her at all. I did enjoy the Wrinkle in Time series, and I have the last one, An Acceptable Time, and am working on getting all of the O'Keefe series

I have a bunch of books on the go, as usual, but tonight I started The Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. It is a short book, so I hope to finish it this weekend.
So far I am enjoying it.

Sam F | 198 comments I finished Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov - disturbing though not very Halloween-like.

Sam- Yes it is disturbing on a whole new level is'nt it

message 9: by Sam F (new)

Sam F | 198 comments I had a hard time getting through it - especially as I have a teenage daughter. Yikes.

message 11: by Sam F (new)

Sam F | 198 comments Just finished Book of Mercy by Leonard Cohen - maybe to counteract the disturbing parts of Lolita :)

Sam, what did you think of Nabakov's style of writing? I have heard a lot about the content, but not as many comments about how he writes.

message 13: by Tracey (new)

Tracey | 916 comments I finished Lucky Jim - not really my style of comedy, I guess.

I found it actually kind of poetic when I wasn't disturbed by his description of the daughter. He uses phrases that are unusual - words I wouldn't recognize as being in use now. I think that was what kept me reading til the end. I have another book of his, so I will eventually tackle it too - needing a bit of a break first!

I just finished The Adventures of Augie March by Saul Bellow too, which won the National Book Award in 1954. I found his style of description much less enjoyable though the subject matter was easier to digest.

I finished a delightful children's book The Ship That Flew by Hilda Lewis. It had a magic ship and time travel. I am a third of the way through Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. I am impressed by his descriptions of the landscape, the menacing heart of darkness.

Ana | 6 comments I finished Jurassic Park / The Lost World by Michael Crichton. As stated in my review, it was a half-half reading experience.

message 24: by Cindy (BKind2Books) (last edited Nov 01, 2016 07:09PM) (new)

Cindy (BKind2Books) (bkind2books) | 1190 comments Finished:
Happy Ever After (333 pages)
A Plague of Zombies (101 pages)
Kitty Goes to Washington (342 pages)
Bound (60 pages)

Still working on:
The Daughter of Time (got to page 150)
Doctor Sleep (got to page 301)

So did about 900-1000 pages.

message 25: by Margie (new)

Margie Finished The Unseen World. Very good although not what I expected. I anticipated more of a techy thriller but it was really a coming of age story. The first half builds slowly and then it's hard to put down.

Hope everyone had a great Read A Thon.

It was interesting to see what aspects of the vampire legend have changed since then. I liked it, but it was slow in parts - typical 19th C details, I guess.
