This will be my second attempt at reading this book. My brother has highly recommended the series, as have others. I think I got up to page 200 last time but I don't remember any of it!

Easy read so far. Feels a lot like YA to me. Richard reminds me of a young Luke Skywalker. I'm interested to see Kahlan's back story. (hide spoiler)]

Up to ch. 20. I am liking it for the most part. A little predictable and some parts drag a bit. (view spoiler)[ Darken Rahl is a sufficiently creepy psychopath. (hide spoiler)]

Some parts of this book are really exciting, and some just drag. It could be that I am distracted with so much going on right now and unable to really concentrate on reading. It seems that Richard vacillates between being an idiot and a power warrior. The part where Kahlan remembers her sister's death was sad, and we can see her motivation, but I want more of her backstory. I think they are spending way too much time with the Mud People. I want to get on with it! (hide spoiler)]

Up to Chapter 37

Just have to say this gets MUCH better after the midpoint. Better pacing and more excitement.

I'm through chapter 7, I think. 11% in. So far I'm really curious about the barrier and the magic. I'm excited to see where it goes.

I really enjoyed this once I got past the midpoint, despite the multiple cliches. I didn't really like Richard's torture sessions, though. Why make him suffer so much? I knew from the very beginning that his brother was a bad guy. Also not a shocker that Darken Rahl is his father (Star Wars, anyone?) I'm interested in seeing where the series goes. (hide spoiler)]
