How to Promote YOUR book on Amazon discussion

Hello all,

My first novel just launched today! I have been so excited and anticipating a lot of pre-orders but unfortunately there is no way for me to see how many people have pre-ordered my book. I self published through BookBaby. Has anyone else experienced this.

In addition! I am so bummed that my launch date was anticlimactic. Not only was I not able to see how many pre-orders I got, I can't seem to find a way to see how many sales at all. I have an Author Central account but the sale period they're reporting right now is up to Oct 23rd. So I guess I have to wait two weeks to see how many people have ordered my book??

Am I missing anything?

You should be able to see Pre-Orders. When you click Reports, there's a section on the right hand side that says Pre-Orders. I can see mine.

This is in Author Central?

No it is on the KDP dashboard when you publish directly to Amazon. Does your bookbaby dashboard show anything? That is probably the only place you will see sales report. I can tell by your book's rank that your book has had some sales but you can only guess based on ranks, really, unless you publish to Amazon directly. Hope this helps and congratulations on your new book!

Also, if you published through BookBaby, they should have your book on sites other than Amazon. Amazon is not the only book seller. :)

Ju, I'll check other sites I know that it's on. Do you know if there is an author page for apple? I know there were pre-sales there too.

Not like Amazon's, but you should get that info from Bookbaby.

I just got off the phone with BookBaby and they keep telling me they CANNOT give me that information for 60 to 90 days. This is the first and last time I will be using them to publish my book. As an author it is vital to have that information so you know if what you're doing marketing wise is working... or not.

So frustrated... but moving on :)

I'm sorry, Erin. That is a terrible delay :(. There's a wealth of information on this forum on how to self-publish from start to finish without services/fees from places like bookbaby, and the best part is you can track your sales in real time or maybe 24 hour delay at the most.

I can give you some of my (Amazon) numbers if you want to compare and make some rough guesses. I currently have a pre-order that I listed one month ago. The book is up to 79 pre-orders and my rank is 65K in the Kindle Store (similar to your rank) and that represents approx. 20 orders per week. Ranks can change dramatically daily and sometimes hourly, but a steady rank means steady sales.

Here is something that was put together to help authors get a rough estimate of Amazon sales based on their book ranks. It is not exact (I find it to be decently close), but the best that could be figured when comparing data and ranks:
