It's that time again! Let's fill our Book Pool!

If you've never played, here are the RULES:

1. When you sign up pick 3 books you want to be included in the "book pool."

2. You can pick any book as long as they have been released before the challenge has started. Please no duplicates. Consider how easy it would be for others to access the book.

3. Once the challenge starts you will read books from the "pool."

4. At the end of January whoever read the most books from the pool is the champion!

Remember, Have fun!

The challenge begins on December 1st.
To claim points, please don't finish your books from the pool until then!

You can sign up below and add books until November 30th.
After November 30th, You can join right in by claiming points - you just don't add books to the pool.

Simple as that, so let's play!

Such a great selection already!

message 13: by Deborah (new)

Deborah Pickstone | 131 comments HI, K.A. - I do see you are new.....one of your suggestions is only available in Kindle - would you consider a different one as I (it's all about ME, of course!) don't use Kindle or e reader-type-thingy.

Whatever the whole group thinks, of course - am not sure about the rules on that?

btw to show the cover, when you look up the book link on the pop up box look at the bottom of it and you'll see an option for book cover - click in that and the link will post as a book cover :)

Sharlene (sharlenehuriwai) | 595 comments Mod
Hi K.A,
Even though it's only available on Kindle, I will allow Peak Hill purely as it's a Kiwi new release. I also see that you've rated it recently. Are you going to re-read it for this challenge? This challenge is about picking books that you plan on reading during December-January months. Just want to make sure you know :)

Will add everyone's picks to the pool soon.

Hi Sharlene

Thanks for the time & energy you put into this.

I'll just add A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens by Charles Dickens at this stage, I want to think about my other 2 a bit more. :)

message 16: by Craig (new)

Craig Sisterson (kiwicraig) | 56 comments Kia ora everyone,

I'm going to support some of our great Kiwi authors with my three choices:

- Red Herring by Jonothan Cullinane (thriller set against the 1951 Waterfront Strikes)
- Like Nobody's Watching by L.J. Ritchie (young adult novel about bullying, social media, and surveillance)
- The Last Time We Spoke by Fiona Sussman (contemporary drama about the aftermath of a brutal home invasion)

Cheers,
Craig
(Kiwi in London)

My local library has Red Herring! Will certainly try toget hold of this one!

Darkpool | 1032 comments I'm so in!!! but will need a little time to contemplate my selections. I've had a few ideas, I just need to remember them now...

message 19: by Angie (new)

Angie (seren-lucy) | 1147 comments Yay! Super excited about this.

message 20: by Kerry (new)

Kerry | 156 comments Enjoying the selection so far.
I didn't include a NZ writer in my three though I do have two Aussies, should I change one of them? I'd probably go for Paul Cleave's Trust No One over the Nevil Shute.

message 21: by Kerry (new)

Kerry | 156 comments Hi Erica -
The Muse looks like a good read and I have requested it from Auckland Libraries, unfortunately I'm #113 in the queue.

message 22: by Angie (new)

Angie | 175 comments Yay! Looking forward to a new book pool. Have to think about what is on my TBR list.

message 23: by Angie (new)

Angie | 175 comments So I remembered there were two Angie's last time! To make things easier I'm Angie B.

I've had a quick look at the books that have been waiting for me :$

Wolf Hall (Thomas Cromwell, #1) by Hilary Mantel
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne
The Zombie Room by R.D. Ronald

message 24: by Darkpool (new)

Darkpool | 1032 comments Right, I have two pinned down, will get back to you on a 3rd.
The Black Moth by Georgette Heyer
Rangatira by Paula Morris (seemed timely with the Lindauer Exhibition at the Auckland Art Gallery at present, plus it has been on my 'to read' list for a while)

Hi Kerry,
Can you confirm if you want this changed? I'm happy to do so. Or if someone can't pick one of their pool choices, this could be an option for someone else.

message 28: by Kerry (new)

Kerry | 156 comments Hi Sharlene - Ok, let's do the switch. The Paul Cleave has a short waitlist but lots of copies at Auckland Libraries.
This also means I can change my mind about which Nevil Shute book I read for another challenge.

Even though Georgette Heyer is my favourite author I won't be reading this one with the group as I reread earlier this year. But last time I looked this particular title was on Project Gutenberg & is also available to read free online.

If anyone else is sitting on the fence not sure whether to join - please do so :) This is a very low pressure challenge, it doesn't matter whether you read 1 book or all the books. The bigger the pool of books though the more fun it is.

Yeah, I'd spotted that you'd read it this year, but it is the one I'm up to in my personal "Read them all in chronological order by setting" challenge.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 1369 comments Mod
& my final one! After much deliberation I've decided on

Late Nights on Air by Elizabeth Hay

It was published 2007, but I checked on WorldCat & plenty of NZ libraries stock it.

Mariana | 33 comments My three choices:

1) All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven
All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven

2) A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson (I've previously struggled to finish this book so I'm hoping this will motivate me to actually finish it this time!)

message 42: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Clay | 2 comments Can I play?
I would nominate these ones:

The Shattering
(NZ Author)

Cloud Cuckoo

Life of Pi

message 43: by Bronwyn (new)

Bronwyn (bronwynelsmore) | 112 comments Great - I'm thrilled to see more people are considering NZ books and authors this time. You all know I’m a keen supporter of Kiwi authors (if not, see flaxroots.com/flaxflower) so, as with the last challenge, I’ve selected titles from 3 more, though 2 went astray along the way!
1) Baby No-Eyes by Patricia Grace has been a favourite of mine for years. I hope others will like it too.
Baby No-Eyes by Patricia Grace
2) The Frost and the Fire, by Ruth Park. I’ve been promising myself for years that I’ll reread this – I remember its stunning opening sentence and the vivid descriptions of the goldfields. Yes, she was born and raised in NZ – another NZ icon claimed by the Aussies.
The Frost And The Fire by Ruth Park
3) The Rosie Project, by Graeme Simsion, who was also born here, in Auckland, but now admits to multiple nationality – Australian, NZ, UK
The Rosie Project (Don Tillman, #1) by Graeme Simsion

message 44: by Darkpool (new)

Darkpool | 1032 comments I have my book #3...
Daughters of the Nile
it is the 3rd book in a series, but the reviews indicate it is not necessary to read the first two first.

Can't wait for December to start!

message 45: by Kat (new)

Kat Cooper (katrinacooper) | 65 comments Oh so many good books to get into! I hope I have the time to read more than my own selection over the holiday break!!

message 46: by Erica (new)

Erica | 1279 comments Mod
Only 1.5 weeks to go before we can get stuck into the book pool :) I have so many I want to read! I'm gonna try and get my library books all read next week so I can start from day one.
I think I'm gonna try and read Wolf Hall first, even though it isn't one of the three I picked, cos it's been on my shelf for years!

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 1369 comments Mod
I'm not sure how far I'm going to get. I'm still plodding through The Far Pavilions & I have only just started Night and Day by Virginia Woolf. I have a third non fiction that I am confident I'll be finished by the end of the month. The other two I may well still be reading in December.

I'm also wanting to read Wolf Hall - & also Red Herring That may be as far as I get, but if I have time I'll tackle Rangatira

I've already read The Black Moth & the Rosie Project - both 5* reads for me!

message 48: by Angie (new)

Angie (seren-lucy) | 1147 comments Please sign me up. My three picks are...
Oryx and Crake
Dead to Me
The Children of Men

message 49: by Erica (new)

Erica | 1279 comments Mod
Angie - great choices! This might the push I need to finally read Orxy and Crake that's been on my shelf for years! My good friend read the series last year and loved it!

message 50: by Kat (new)

Kat Cooper (katrinacooper) | 65 comments I loved Oryx and Crake too! It's such a good story, you wont regret picking it! :-)
