Hi! I'm Bev, your hostess for the Mount TBR Challenge...and I'm a book- and challenge-aholic. January 2017 will kick off the fifth year for the Mount TBR Reading Challenge and I don't seem to be getting those mountains moved at all. Despite the fact that I hope to have knocked 150 books off of my 2016 Mount TBR by the end of December, there are still whole mountain ranges lined up and down my hallway and in my back room waiting to be conquered. As fast as I read 'em and get them off the stacks, my bookaholic ways help me replace them.

So, once again, I plan to concentrate on reading primarily from my own books in the coming year. And you're invited to join me in knocking out some of those books that have been waiting in the wings for weeks....months...even years.

I'd love it if you'd tell us a bit about yourself and maybe give us an idea what your mountain range looks like. How you acquired it...any little thing you'd like to share about yourself.

Guy I'll join in but I need to think about which mountain I want to tackle.
It's not a mountain, btw, it's a whole TBR room

Guy--I know what you mean. My TBR Mountain Range goes along the wall down the hallway and extends into my back room...

MaryAnn (EmilyD1037) I always have a hard time this time of year, too much time lost and not enough left to really accomplish much. I have been telling myself the last week that I wish it was time to start the year plan for 2017. And now here the team is !

I am going for the 150 - Mt. Olympus.

I am a disabled 64 y/o wife, mother, grandmother. I am Roman Catholic and a Benedictine oblate. My reading tastes extend to cozy mysteries, police procedurals, Catholic spiritualties, memoirs, auto/biographies, classics, and some modern literature.

I have 7 full bookcases in the house and at least 12 totes full in the garage. I am trying not to buy anymore, unless they complete
all ready begun series.

message 5: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth I'm doing it for the first time in 2017, hopefully this will help me with my goal of reading and cutting down on my Kindle books, becouse I have 1185 books on my Kindle app and so far read only 85 of them which means I have 1073 books left, not counting the rest of my books on my TBR. And it doesn't help that i keep getting more free Kindle books.

Yes, I always get anxious for the new challenge year to start about this time too. Decided I better start getting my challenges ready to go for 2017.

message 9: by Sam (new)

Sam (aramsamsam) Hi there! I'm a third time mountaineer!
This challenge has helped me to reduce my TBR significantly, so why stop? I know I want to go for 48 books, like this year. If things go as planned, I will be left with roughly 30 books on my TBR, a goal I have been working towards since the beginning of 2014!

message 10: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) Hi guys!

Just like Sam, this is my third year participating in the challenge, but I never seem to make a significant dent in my Mount TBR. I just keep buying books! I might be hopeless.

At the moment I have 362 books on my TBR, many of which are ebooks - it's so easy to download them, especially when they are free on Project Gutenberg or similar websites...

In 2017 I will go for Mount Kilimanjaro. In the 2016 challenge I have read 64 books from my TBR so far, but I don't think I will get to the top of El Toro. So, for 2017, Mount Kilimanjaro it is!

Brianna (bebecburt) | 44 comments Hello! I'm Brianna and this will be my second year giving this challenge a try. I started the year off strong in 2016, but fell into the worst reading slump so I don't think I'll reach the top of Mt Ararat. I'm going to try for Mt Vancouver to start with in 2017 and we'll see what happens!

Like with 2016, I'm only going to count books I physically owned prior to 2017. Re-reads will be allowed if I haven't read them in over 3-4 years.

message 17: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (keslei) | 37 comments This will be my first time doing a TBR challenge, and I'm aiming to summit Mont Blanc. I don't actually have a huge amount of unread books sitting around, since we move every few years and I have to keep my book accumulation to a minimum. However, this past year has been bad for my self-control, and I've got about 30 books on my TBR pile at the moment, so I think it's time to get to work on those.

message 20: by Jessika (new)

Jessika (jessika_56) Hi there, friends! Nice to see familiar names here already, and also some new folks! 2017 will be my 4th year participating in this challenge. I've worked my way up from 36, to 48, to 60 books over the last 3 years. I'm going to stick with 60 books again this year to give myself a little wiggle room with new releases, especially of half concluded series.

I'm a list person and a stat person, mostly as a way of encouraging myself, so if you find it boring, please feel free to skip!

In 2017, I want to:
- Get TBR 2011 (mostly books I had before joining GR) under 50 books
- Really focus on completing series! I have 11 series underway, and 16 series I haven't yet started, but would like to.

Please feel free to add me as a friend. Happy climbing!

message 22: by Natalie (new)

Natalie Tyler (doulton) Hello and thank you for creating this challenge. I am new to book challenges so I will only (timidly) sign up for Pike's Peak: Read 12 books from your TBR pile/s

I have about 4 huge TBR bookcases. I have a very bad habit of buying books and thinking that because I own the book there is no rush to read it. And many of them are books I have badly wanted to read. This seems like a perfect occasion to get started.

I have a blog at www.gubbinal.com

Cheers and good luck!

message 24: by Cally73 (new)

Cally73 I'm Jayne and this is my second year participating. I've failed dreadfully this year after getting distracted with new books and ebooks. I've set my goal lower this time - Mt. Vancouver. At least the books I've been adding to my TBR pile over the year are going to be eligible for next challenge.

message 25: by Leslie (new)

Leslie Hi all - I am joining for the 3rd year. My mountain of unread books is gigantic if I include Kindle and digital audiobooks but I have quite a lot of paperbacks and hardcover print books too. For some reason, these print books always seem to be the ones pushed to the end of the queue so I need this challenge to make sure I get around to them!

I am setting a goal of 48 print books (Mount Ararat) again in 2017 as it looks like it is working out well this year.

message 26: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (outtaty) | 34 comments Hello! I'm back for my second year. As of this date, I have 300 owned books to read both in physical and Ebook forms. I think my physical books have more of an impact because they take up space that I don't have, but I count both forms for this challenge. Seriously, it's a relief to have them read no matter the format! I tend to start with a low mountain and then move up as the year goes on. I'll make a decision where to start soon.

message 30: by Pamela (new)

Pamela | 76 comments Hello fellow climbers! My name is Pamela. I've participated in this mountain climb in previous years, but not in 2016. I needed to tackle some of my library book back log and when the year started most of my physical books were in storage. Now most are out and filled up my bookshelves, and still several boxes are unopened and no room on the shelves. I need to make room!

My TBR shelf on goodreads shows I own just under 800 books, and I'm sure there's many more that aren't listed on gr just yet. Most are physical print books, but I also have too many unread eBooks and Audio books that I own.

For this 2017 challenge I'm going to focus on the print books, and start small at Mount Blanc as my goal. I do hope to get to higher mountain peaks though. Sadly, in the years I've attempted this I've barely managed it....new books are so distracting. :) oh, and I work in a library, so that doesn't help either!

and Thanks Bev for inviting me back!

message 33: by Sophia (new)

Sophia (sophiarose) Hi Everyone!
My name is Sophia and this will be my third year for the climb. Like many, I do alright reading through my books, but I keep adding which is wherein lies the problem (or not, depending on your perspective).
Most of my TBR pile is sitting on my Kindle as I show little resistance for sales and freebies.
I do read a lot of newer releases and have review obligations so I like the realistic challenge of beginning at Mt. Toro (75 books) level.

Wish me luck and all the best to you as well.

Gabriella | 8 comments Hi there!
2017 will be my second year. I'm trying Mt. Kilimanjaro instead of Mt. Vancouver. I'll have more time to read, so let's see how well it goes.
This year I failed miserably because... well *sighs* In the beginning it was cool, climbing the old books. And then I read 200+ books that I wasn't supposed to, so... yeah *hides*
I don't have room for more books, so I hope I can tackle the ones I have because, besides a lot of shelves, I also have three piles of books almost falling.
As I don't read on Kindle that much, it should be easy to get some physical space. Or not.

Natália Lopes (silkcaramel) | 107 comments Hey guys! This will be my second year trying to conquer my TBR mountain of ebooks (and some physical ones). I'm close to putting a flag on Mt. Kilimanjaro for this year's challenge and I'm excited to repeat the feat in 2017. But unlike this year, since I need more time to concentrate on my studies on what will be a hellish year in college, I'll start from Pike's Peak and move to higher mountains as I go - it gives me a sense that I'm making actual progress and encourages me to move forward with the challenge. Another goal for next year is to finish some of my on-going series, so I can start new ones.
Excited to start climbing these mountains already!

Lynn | 29 comments Hi,
This is my first year in the TBR group. I have so many good TBR books to read. I find that I get distracted and read new books or check books out from the library. I read about 65 to 70 books a year so 24 sounds reasonable on my first climb. I read almost exclusively mysteries. Looking forward to climbing with this group.

message 45: by Roz (new)

Roz (irasobrietate) This will be my second year doing this challenge. I started off pretty strong on Mt Olympus but then grad school came along and distracted me. I'm only one book away from reaching the top of Mt Everest and depending on how December goes after the semester finishes I might still manage to climb up all the way to Mt Olympus. But I'm definitely going to have less reading time next year so I'm just going to be shooting for Mt Everest in 2017.

Rebecca NJ (njreader) | 16 comments I'm in again for the 4th year of this challenge. One of these days I am going to tackle Mt. Olympus! I will have to figure out what level I am going to do for 2017.

I still have over 2300 books that I physically own and I really need to start purging. I really should just focus on this type of challenge rather than the ones where I need to read something specific per month.

Thanks for keeping this challenge going another year Bev!

message 48: by Lyndsey (new)

Lyndsey Gillespie | 1 comments Hi, I'm Lyndsey. I own LOTS of books, many of them still packed in totes from our move 2 years ago. 2017 will be my first year for reading challenges and my goal is Mt. Kilimanjaro. I love buying rather than borrowing books, so I'm sure I'll keep adding to my TBR pile as the year goes on, but I hope to at least make a small dent in it!

message 49: by Louise (new)

Louise | 29 comments Hi I'm Louise

I'm doing Ararat in 2016 - and will hopefully finish. I aim to climb it again in 2017! I read contemporary fiction, classics, steampunk, poetry, zombiebooks, fantasy and quirky, obscure books I find on gutenberg.org

I worked as a bookseller for many years, which started me off buying books a lot faster than I read them, as I was around them all day, had first pick when there were sales etc.. I have more than 1000 unread, physical books scattered around my house, 200+ audiobooks and some ebooks and I still go to library sales etc. My oldest TBR books are from 2011...

So I'm trying to read a bunch and then give 1-3 star reads to friends/family/charity :-)

message 50: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (bd200789) I'm Rebecca, and I'm going for Mt. Olympus again next year. I have thousands of books between my physical books, and my Kindle. I am focusing on the 'real' ones first, as they are taking up so much space. I used to keep them once I read them, unless I didn't like the book at all, but now I'm just keeping my favorites.
