Selection was pretty good.
And I haven't read Under the Never Sky, but I'm pretty sure it's on my to-be read list.
I'd recommend Lunar Chronicles, Wings of Fire, Half upon a time, The False Prince-
*gets cut off cuz list is so long*
Why did you hate Twilight? (It was my first YA book, and I loved it, but unfortunately, I can't say the same to a lot of other YA books)
Unlike most haters, I think Bella is very smart and perceptive.

Twilight is also just not very well written on a technical level.
Basically the only thing it has going for it is emotional suspense, and that part didn't get me at all so there wasn't really anything to like.
Except the baby.
Luvluvluv the baby.
Oh...I thought Twilight was very well written, and for some reason, love every part of it.
Maybe it has something to do with being my first YA book, but...I LOVE Twilight.
Ok, we should move on to other recommendations.
(All of the below ARE THE FIRST BOOK OF A SERIES/TRILOGY)
I recommend:
MIDDLE GRADE-
Fablehaven
The Books of Beginning
The Land of Stories
BOTH-
The School for Good and Evil
YA-
Red Queen
Legend
The Selection
Michael Vey (second book's on hold right now for me)
AND MORE THAT I WOULD WRITE DOWN, BUT I really need...to...sleep...
*yawns (for real-I just yawned)*

I read it when I was in fourth grade. (Probably another reason I didn't like it.)
And yes, it's well written on a surface level, with prose and stuff, but I'm referring more to plot devices and pacing and stuff, which was NOT.

I do intend to go back and read them though, I did like them. I'm just waiting for the last one to come out first.
The violence and dead rats and stuff didn't really bother me, so I think I'll like it.

Telling me about the cannibalism is the wrong decision. It just makes me want to read it more...
Ok, I am close to finishing the second book, but now that you mention cannibalism...
*runs away screaming*
So, since I'm going to finish the second book and won't read the rest of the series,
I can't believe I'm asking this, but I have to, since I'm not going to read about cannibalism,..
Spoilers, please!
(I might just read it in time, but frankly, I'm not into that series very much, so please tell me what happens)

First, I would like to recommend the Selection series, the Under the Never Sky series, and the Twilight Saga. ;)
