I think people (like myself) who have not read the Outlander series might have some trouble with this one. I've seen the first season of the TV show, because my sister is a fan of the series, so at least I know who the main characters are, like Claire and Jaime. But it took me quite a while to figure out who was related to who and who was supposed to know who. So I felt I was often confused when I felt I was supposed to know what was going on.
But even when I asked for some clarification from my sister, she was a bit confused about the premise of this story, what with the glowing auras, the stones, etc, so maybe even having read the series it doesn't fill in everything? She didn't remember St-Germain (who apparently appears in the second book) nor anyone called "The Frog".
And when I first saw the name St-Germain my thought was like, wow, a crossover with Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's vampire series? But no, turns out St-Germain was a real person, though strange enough to be portrayed as either a vampire or a mad alchemyst :) After all he claimed to be 500 years old so undead immortal or time traveller is a good fit.
However I didn't really find it a good fit for this collection, the mad scientist was a bit of a stretch and only a small part of this story...novella...
