Waqas Zaib Here is the first question, cant belive nothing has been asked since July 2009!

I live in England and say I wanted to buy a Hardback to be released in the next two months released in the US and ordered via Amazon.com.

As its a pre order, when it gets released, will my book be a first edition first print. I ask because in the UK, whenever I have ordered, its always a first edition (some times their is a print line and then its a first print but some times they only say first edition).

Thanks

I wish I could help you more, but the only thing I could say is that sometimes it really is a first edition, but most books that I buy here usually say first edition. Who knows though, maybe you are on to something no one has thought of before. I sure hadn't :) I might be able to get the answer for you shortyly. If I do I will post it on here.

What in the world did I just click on???? It looks really cool, but I have no idea what it is. Also seeing how I love dragons, it only interests me more. Please explain :)

That's the potential problem with buying from online bookstores. If you pre-order two months out you'll probably get a first/first, but say the book has been anticipated for months or years, and it's extremely popular (e.g., A Dance with Dragons by George R.R. Martin). Well, if more pre-orders have been placed than the initial purchase by that bookstore (say Amazon's got 10% of a hypothetical first print run of 100,000, with the rest of the books going to B&N, Borders, Books-A-Million, libraries, independent bookstores, etc.) then your order may end up being a later printing if it was number 10,001 or later in the queue. Does that make sense?

If you really want to insure getting a first/first, then look for a reputable independent dealer (that's mostly what I do for UK firsts that I want) that's advertising fine/fine or mint editions of the book you want (you can often get them signed, too). You'll undoubtedly pay more than on Amazon, but you'll mostly have the peace of mind of knowing you got a first printing/first edition in pretty much perfect condition (unlike what usually shows up from non-independent online bookstores, especially after an overseas trip).

I hope that helps,

Melissa (rockstarninja) Actually, I have a question. It's slightly off topic, but if anyone knows. . . for the giveaways, does it make much difference if you add the book into your 'to-read'? Or are the winners chosen purely at random and it doesn't matter if you add them or not?

message 9: by sonya (new)

sonya marie madden | 411 comments i don't think you have to add the book as a to-read. just email or post a message about the giveaway. I do think the winners are random. i haven't looked into any giveaways yet.

message 10: by Afsana (new)

Afsana (afsanaz) | 157 comments The goodread giveaways- i here more likely if you add it to your to read books and you have a shelf for your first reads?

If I remember it states that somewhere when you go on the section re giveawats

Sonya - for giveways done officially through goodreads and not by threads in individual groups you complete a quick form and apply for each one you are eligible for - can not post or email

message 11: by Afsana (new)

Afsana (afsanaz) | 157 comments here is what it states after you have entered a giveaway

Your entry has been submitted. You will be notified on May 01, 2011 if you win. Don't forget to add this book to your 'to-read' list.

I've won a lot of giveaways (I enter TONS), and I have never added a book I wanted until the contest was over -- that's the only way I can keep track of what I have vs. what I'd like to buy.

Not having a particular book in my "to-read" has never affected winning/not winning, as far as I can tell. I think it's pretty random.

Although, I have noticed that I seem to be "luckier" if I enter the giveaway right before it ends!

lol. Yeah, Leah, I do have quite a library that I must admit I am a bit proud of. And not all of my books are on Goodreads, either. At last count, I actually have 4505 items in my collection. :-)

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

My goodness, I'd be proud of it, too -- that sounds absolutely wonderful to me!

Artfullybooked | 1 comments i have a serious addiction to artist monographs which is costing me upwards of $1000 a month which is getting out of control. Im exhausted at the notion of how to resell them when I need to buy cat food for myself when Im old plus these books are so heavy it might be impossible just to carry them. Also I am buying more and more shelves.

message 19: by Ana (new)

Ana Can't we all agree! People just don't understand our "addiction" to books and reading and buying them! Books hold more than the internet ever could! It's like a kid walking into a candy store when i walk into a bookstore. There's something about the atmosphere, the fresh creases on a book and the binding and font. And it's so remarkable that a simple few hundred pages with letters on it, can hold so much meaning and power! We buy book, because we love them and can't get enough of them. If only people could understand...but eventually we all do. Even if you don't read, who da thunk that there is a book out there for everyone! You just have to search and keep going back to that bookstore. :) It's what makes us feel whole. I may spend a lot on books, but in the end, it's all worth it. :)

I just won my first book which I havent received in the mail yet. When I finish it do I have to start a new First Reads shelf for books I have won? Wow I thought I owned alot of books I'm tiny compared to some of you that makes me feel good. thankyou

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

I agree books do hold more than the internet. I also have cable with plenty of shows to watch but you will see me with a book instead

message 22: by Crystal (new)

Crystal Griffiths | 2 comments I will add to this since it has not been commented on for 2 years now :)

I am an addict, and if I like an author, I will go and buy all their works, even if I haven't read them. They will sit on the "to be read" shelf until I get there. I have at least 5 favorite authors and I will go and buy them in hardcover, so I tend to have duplicates of these books in paperback and hardcover :)

I love books!!!

Bonnie G. (narshkite) I hope I am in the right place for this, but I have a basic question so figured I would start at the begining. How do I embed a picture of the book in my posts?

Thanks for any help!

Look at the top/right of the post box click on "add book/author". Type in your book title or author and click on add and then click on "link" or "cover". That should just about do it! Have fun!

Heidi Angell (heidiangell) | 48 comments Is there a place in this group for authors to ask the lovely bibliophiles for help? I have enjoyed being a part of this group for a couple of years now. I am working on a new release and I really struggle with front and back matter. I thought "who better to ask for help than my fellow bibliophiles?" But I don't want to spam the group. I really enjoy being here! I wanted to ask for those who were willing to help to hop over to my blog and take a look at the options for front and back matter and let me know their thoughts. Is there a best place to do this?

message 28: by Erin (new)

Erin Germain (demiguise) | 97 comments I've been going through the group, and since it's been up and running for some time, there are a lot of threads! Some of them are ongoing, which is cool, but others are done and over (purchases for past years, etc.).

Would it be possible to create a "basement" or "archived" catagory for those threads? It would make searching out current conversations a bit easier, IMHO. :)

Heidi, first, sorry it took so long to answer you about this. I think since you have such a unique request, that putting it under General would be just fine for now.
