Tome Topple Readathon discussion

Use this thread to discuss A Game of Thrones!

Note: These discussion boards will not be heavily moderated, so please do be careful about spoilers and using the tags, as we probably will not catch any slips. I'm going to start this one, but it will be a reread of the first one. I barely remember, so rereading as a refresher.

Never read it, but have seen the show, and plan to read it! :) I can't wait!

I literally just bought the illustrated edition yesterday and I am a bit scared. I need to buddy read this with someone LOL

I just started first book on audiobook - it's 200 hours long! But I've put it off for too long.

I'm waiting for my Kobo to finish charging, then I'm going to start reading this. I have a collection of the first five novels in one eBook, so I'm just going to work my way through the series.

Just started reading this today! I've been putting it off for FAR too long.

@leona I'm listening to the audio book and reading it. I hope it's not considered cheating lol.

My illustrated version just arrived and I'm switching from audio to book. I'm ~20% done with book 1 and I love it.

@Elina what do you think of the narrator?

I like Roy Dotrice as narrator. I saw an interview with him and I was surprised to find out that he was doing voices for all of the of characters by himself. For me I might have liked female voice for female characters a bit better, but he makes perfect Sansa in my mind.
I am constantly switching betveen audio and book - audiobook allows me to multitask and hardcover allows me to relax at evenings.

@Elina I do like his voice for the men characters but I wish they had a female narrator for the female characters. I think it would have made the audio book more enjoyable.

I would try the audio book, if you have access to it. This seems like a good audio to listen to while exercising, or sitting in traffic...kill two birds with one stone, and squeeze in extra reading time eyes-free ;)

I'm starting Clash of Kings for this round of Tome Topple.

I'm reading the 1st book for this round of the Topple, I'd totally be down to have a buddy to read with, discuss and keep up motivation!

Would love somebody to team up with to tackle this almost 1000 page monster. :)

@beth @jazz @dylan do you guys want to make a little group? I'm reading GOT #1 too & could use buddies and motivation too! maybe we can have twitter sprints or even live google hangouts every other day or so? i'd be happy to host. LMK! I ordered the box set, it will arrive Thursday :D

I'm already buddy reading this with Dylan and Beth. If both of them are okay with it I'm totally in for the 4 of us teaming up. Regardless I'm willing to read with all three of you if you want. I'm just learning to use google hangouts but it seems like a good way to chat if you're up for hosting.

I've been sitting on this audiobook for a while now but im excited to finally get to it!!

I just finished A Storm of Swords, which is the third book! It is my favorite so far!! I can't wait to get into the fourth one! I'll probably post a review on my Youtube channel Liko Loves Books. It is a long read but it is sooo worth it!

Thank you! I wouldn't spoil it for anyone but I love the story so much that I like participating in the discussions. I hope you enjoy it, it's my favorite series so far!

I am REALLY loving it! I have seen the tv show so that helps A LOT otherwise I think I'd be a little overwhelmed with characters and roles. I'm just over halfway, about pg 460, after Tyrion & Catelyn go to (view spoiler)[Lysa Aryyn & Tyrion survives the trial by combat & leaves. What I found really interesting is that Catelyn said after Jon Aryyn died, and without Lysa's consent, they planned to take Robert Aryyn to Casterly Rock for training, but the Maester insists that Jon himself was planning to send Robert to Dragonstone for training before he died. That seems like a HUGE piece to the puzzle for some reason. (hide spoiler)]

Nice!! You will love it. I only watched half of the pilot and decided to read the books first. Usually shows or movies tend to ruin the books for me. But I heard in this case I would have been safe because the shows are amazing.

Its SOO impressive how closely the episodes match the books. Obviously some minor things are left out due to time constraints, otherwise they do a fantastic job of choosing what to include/leave out. I'm watching right after I read it. I found an awesome Chapter to Episode chart, I can share if you're interested, it covers the first three seasons which is the first 4-5 books.

I just passed page 500 ... into the part where Ned and Cersei (view spoiler)[talk in the godswood and he tells her he has figured everything out. i mean come ON - way to show ALL your cards, Ned. (hide spoiler)] and Robert returns from hunting and (view spoiler)[ he's REALLY really injured. (hide spoiler)]. Now you KNOW something bad is going to happen. Or a plot for something bad is totally going to start. Nothing good can come of all this.

Sure I would love that! You will definitely grow to not like the Lannisters at all! Although later on I'm okay with Jamie and Tyrion
