EDITED TO NOTE: We have chosen Written in the Stars for our first read! So everyone grab your copy wherever you prefer to get your books and starting December 1, this will be our book for the month of December. We've never led a book club before, so bear with us as we figure out how this part goes. lol We're open to ideas and discussion topics from those who have participated in these on GR before. ~KK

Hello everyone!

We'd like to begin our book a month reading/discussion this December. No time like the present, right? I've been doing some research and here are a few options. Let me know which of these you'd be interested in starting with.

Written in the Stars by Aisha Saeed

George by Alex Gino

The Farming of Bones by Edwidge Danticat

We'd like to settle on this soon so everyone has time to get the book before December 1. In the meantime, we're also open to suggestions moving forward. We're hoping some of these can also be found in libraries.

Lux and Dmytry KK

Jenni | 6 comments Personally I would prefer Written in the Stars. George seems good to but the reviews of the third book (which shows never judge a book by its title apparently) have really put me off it.

TOMORROW IS DECEMBER! Are you all ready to dive in to our new book? I've never led a GR reader group before, so I'm making this up as I go along, but I'll probably start discussion topics for this book as I'm reading it, and you can all join in to discuss (or start your own topics, I think?) as we go.

I'm also open to ideas and suggestions on how to do this better. Just let me know! :) ~Lux KK

Denise | 21 comments After reading the first chapter I was surprised that Naila was not aloud to go watch her schools last soccer game... I felt bad for her... I was glad that her friend Carla sent her the highlights of the game

message 19: by Ilsa (new)

Ilsa Kaattari | 2 comments I just finished reading the book. I will not reveal the ending, but since the main theme is a cultural bias that women are second class people who are forced into unwanted, arranged marriages (and not follow their dreams of education/careers), I was mostly very disturbed by this story. I have been a feminist since the 70's and I do not tolerate disrespectful treatment of women. Perhaps the main goal of this book was to spotlight that such treatment still occurs.

I really think it was. There were author notes at the end that indicated as such. This still happens, even now, even in our country. It's appalling and frightening that in such a real and visceral way women are still seen as property. :(

By the way we have a discussion thread open for full spoiler discussions for those who have finished reading the book! And we should probably start to think about what we should read for January! It will be here before any of us realize it. YIKES!

Ivy Valentiny (ivyann) | 1 comments I didn't join in on the December due to not being interested in the selection so I hope we go fantasy for January!!!!! (:
