Juanita (juanitav) | 744 comments A book set in a hotel immediately draws Eloise to mind but there are also Hotel and The Hotel New Hampshire, which I haven't read but am guessing works?

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and
Inside the Dream Palace: The Life and Times of New York's Legendary Chelsea Hotel are two others.

poshpenny | 1916 comments I keep hearing good things about A Gentleman in Moscow and am considering that, although I've never actually read The Shining.

Evil Under the Sun is nice if you want to enjoy the seaside with Hercule Poirot.

If you want to stretch to include motels there's always Psycho

I liked Danielle's suggestion (from the discussion thread) of Suite Scarlett. I'd never heard of that book, it fits this category perfectly, and it looks really cute and fun.

message 4: by Kathy (new)

Kathy E Hotel du Lac by Anita Brookner is a Booker Prize winner and very good.

message 5: by poshpenny (new)

poshpenny | 1916 comments I was feeling pedantic and looked up the definition of "hotel." All of the dictionaries say it is a place where you pay money to sleep in a room. So, hotel, motel, inn, B&B... interpret as you wish.

Dang it I also want to read
Greenglass House (Greenglass House, #1) by Kate Milford

Too many hotels, not enough career advice. *sigh*

LOL! You got that right!!

message 7: by Megan (new)

Megan (mghrt06) | 546 comments I don't think I have any Hotel books already on my TBR. So I have to do some research on it. I found Hotel Ruby by an author I have read before. Just looking at it now, I think it's a horror book. Oh boy, this will be interesting because I don't usually read those!

message 8: by Fannie (new)

Fannie D'Ascola | 438 comments It's time to re-read The Shining

message 9: by Ariella (new)

Ariella Hotel on the corner of bitter and sweet by Jamie Ford

message 10: by Donna (new)

Donna | 32 comments I have just read the Gentleman in Moscow and it was so good I will read it again in 2017 because any other option will be a let down

message 11: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 643 comments If anyone's partway through the Series of Unfortunate Events, the second last book The Penultimate Peril is set in a hotel.

message 12: by Therese (new)

Therese | 133 comments At Bertram's Hotel by Agatha Christie

message 13: by Marilyn (last edited Nov 21, 2016 03:45PM) (new)

Marilyn (marilyn357) | 143 comments The Inn BoonsBoro Trilogy by Nora Roberts

message 14: by Clementine (new)

Clementine (clementinebojangles) | 0 comments Suite Scarlett by Maureen Johnson is pretty delightful YA and fits the category beautifully.

message 15: by °~Amy~° (new)

°~Amy~° (amybooksit) | 1 comments I am reading Gentleman in Moscow at some point in the next year, probably for this topic since it fits.

For a light, chick lit read, I recommend Always the Baker, Never the Bride (Emma Rae Creations, #1) by Sandra D. Bricker

message 16: by Juliebean (new)

Juliebean (juliebean512) | 145 comments If you're looking for something light/short, maybe to share with the kids, my daughter enjoyed Aliens on Vacation (also has a subtitle - The Intergalactic Bed and Breakfast)

message 17: by Lindi (last edited Nov 22, 2016 04:12PM) (new)

Lindi (lindimarie) This is a harder prompt than it sounds! At least for me. Then I remembered I never read Nights in Rodanthe, I just saw the movie.

At least part of the story takes place in an inn (I'm not sure how close the book/movie are), so I'm going to count it!

message 19: by Betty (new)

Betty Q I'll be reading Julie Klassen's new book The Innkeeper of Ivy Hill for this prompt! I've been looking forward to that one and was hoping it would fit in somewhere!

message 20: by Tara (new)

Tara Bates | 1008 comments I'll be leaving this prompt blank. Who knows maybe I'll come across something.

A Gentleman in Moscow is fabulous! I wasn't expecting much but I couldn't put it down.

message 22: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (wanna_read_all_the_books) | 1 comments I'm torn on this one. On the one hand I would really love to re-read The Shining but on the other hand, I'm trying to read as many books that I haven't already read for this challenge so that leads me toward Jamaica Inn.

Hmm I do love Nicholas Sparks and have yet to read this one.. I might read it for this prompt lol

Always the Baker, Never the Bride looks like a fun book! I might read it for this prompt! Thank you!

message 26: by Kathy (new)

Kathy E I keep reading good things about A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles, so I'll try that.

A Gentleman in Moscow was great. Too bad I read it already!

Tami (tamidale) Kathy wrote: "I keep reading good things about A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles, so I'll try that."

I recently finished it and I loved it! It's not a fast read. It was also the kind of book that gets better the more you read and the ending was awesome. Great choice!

I already have [book:The Hotel New Hampshire|11768] on my TBR list, so I'm hoping that works. Just reading the cover blurb, it sounds like it has to do with an actual hotel.

message 30: by Lyndsay (new)

Lyndsay Katherine wrote: "It's probably bending the prompt a bit, but I've got The Woman in Cabin 10 marked down for this. A cruise is basically a floating a hotel after all."

Oooh...I like this idea! I was having a hard time finding books for this category that interested me.

message 31: by Jo (new)

Jo (allweatherreader) | 50 comments Would a B&B count? The Innkeeper series (begins with Clean Sweep) is light-hearted and really good fun. I'm going to read either the third in that series or The Way Inn.

message 32: by Sukriti (new)

Sukriti | 7 comments Ive picked up Hotel du Lac for this. Went to a book sale and picked up the first book with the word Hotel in it and I now see it comes recommended as well in this thread so I hope its good!

I would think a B&B would count. Most prompts have a little room for interpretation.

I think a B&B is perfectly in keeping with the spirit of the prompt. I also like the idea of the cruise ship setting and would go so far as to say something like Murder on the Orient Express would count as well.

I agree. I like to see all the different takes people have on each prompt too. It introduces me to so many new books to add to my to-read list! lol

message 36: by Jo (new)

Jo (allweatherreader) | 50 comments Hooray! The cruise ship idea is ingenious, I agree also - would not have thought of it but they are just massive floating hotels, aren't they?

message 37: by Fannie (new)

Fannie D'Ascola | 438 comments I may read The Witches again with my son. It was one of my favorite book growing up.

message 38: by Taylor (new)

Taylor | 178 comments I'm sorry if someone already mentioned this one, but does anybody know if The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America takes place in a hotel? The description kind of makes it sound like it is but I'm not sure...

message 39: by Tami (new)

Tami (tamidale) I've listened to this on audio and it is not one that comes to mind for this category. Devil in White City takes place all over the city and a hotel is not the main setting by any means. The World's Fair is really the main focus.

message 40: by poshpenny (new)

poshpenny | 1916 comments Taylor wrote: "I'm sorry if someone already mentioned this one, but does anybody know if The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America takes place in a hotel?"

This is one of my favorite books! I wouldn't use it for this prompt. Although... I guess you could. It's hard to say much without being spoilery. The book is not really "set in a hotel" but at the same time, the "World's Fair Hotel" certainly is in the book. And stuff happened there. And while reading about the stuff that happened there, I had to check FOUR TIMES that it was actually non-fiction.

Erik Larson is now one of my favorite authors.

I say, if you want to use that book for this prompt, go for it!

message 41: by Taylor (new)

Taylor | 178 comments Thanks for your input Tami and poshpenny! I will probably not use it for this prompt but will find somewhere else to fit it in. I've been staring at it for about 4 years now - I figure it's time to finally read it!!

message 42: by Tami (new)

Tami (tamidale) Taylor there is a new book coming out by Jonathan kellerman called heartbreak hotel. I believe the release date is early February.

message 43: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 643 comments For someone looking for non-fiction, maybe something like An Ordinary Man: An Autobiography, which is about Paul Rusesabagina, the man who sheltered people in his hotel during the Rwandan genocide.

message 44: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 2377 comments Jacob Tomsky's 'Heads in Beds' - a memoir of the hotel industry. also has a subtitle if you need for that category.

message 45: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Bergman (marshop) | 112 comments I discovered that one of my TBR books is about best friends who buy and renovate a hotel. The Undoing is a mystery that describes the murder of these three people. This one sounds pretty good.

message 46: by Kate (new)

Kate Williams | 0 comments My first thought was The Shining but I think I would find it too terrifying. Still went with horror but hopefully not as scary to me. Not a hotel but a motel, Psycho. Even of it scares me it is only 176 pages of terrifying compared to 688 pages for King to give me nightmares.

As I am also doing the list with my 2nd grader we will be reading Eloise for the first time.

message 47: by Rebecca (last edited Dec 23, 2016 11:34PM) (new)

Rebecca (yarninaround) Taylor wrote: "I'm sorry if someone already mentioned this one, but does anybody know if The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America takes place in a hote..."

Devil in the White City is about a serial killer (reputedly the first in America) who rents rooms...so technically, yes. But that is not the focus of the story, only mentioned in passing. The story is much more about the Expo that took place during the same time and more tangentially about the people that disappear from their rented rooms.

PS: It is a really good book though!

That looks interesting! It could work for "two different time periods" too, I think?
