Mark André ULYSSES, Chapter 1, Telemachus: Stephen Dedalus is introduced.
Stephen Dedalus is the hero of Joyce's previous novel: Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. You need not have read it. But maybe for those who have not we could try and summarize briefly what it is about.
Basically Portrait follows Stephen from the time he was a baby until he graduates from the university. We see three things that have the strongest influence on Stephen growing up: his mother, his father, and his Jesuit educators.
His mother was loving and very pious.
His father was charming but also profligate.
The Jesuits, from whom he received an excellent education, want him for the priesthood.
Stephen decides he wants to be an artist (writer) rather than a priest: the lures of love, sex, and freedom turn out to be stronger than belief.
At the end of Portrait, Stephen has graduated from the university and has either dumped, or been dumped by his girlfriend. He decides that Dublin is just too parochial for his artistic vision and leaves for Paris to begin his quest.
