30.1 - Maya's Task : Good Things Come in Pairs

Some of the best things come in pairs! Peanut butter and jelly, forks and spoons, milk and Oreos... the combinations are endless!

Books with the main page genres of Graphic Novels/Manga/Comics are allowed for this task as long as they meet SRC requirements!

Choose one pair of the following and read the two books for that pair. You CANNOT mix and match pairs!

One:
A: Read a book that is 1st in a series. This must be indicated by the book's metadata on Goodreads, and must be marked as #1 in the series (no .5 prequels).
AND
B: Read the 2nd book in the same series as book A. This must be indicated by the book's metadata on Goodreads, and must be marked as #2 in the series.

Two:
A: Read a book written by a new-to-you author.
REQUIRED: You must indicate this is a new-to-you author!
AND
B: Read another book by the same author, but it cannot be in the same series!

Three:
A: Read a book with only black text on the cover.
REQUIRED: You must post the cover when you claim this task!
Examples:
AND
B: Read a book with only white text on the cover.
REQUIRED:You must post the cover when you claim this task!

Please could you confirm whether these are acceptable:

I would like to read The Secret Scripture and Days Without End, both by Sebastian Barry, who is a new-to-me author.

GR lists The Secret Scripture as part of a McNulty Family series. This doesn't seem to be a numbered series as such, rather a collection of books about different members of the same family over time.

Days Without End is about one of the McNulty ancestors, but GR doesn't list it as part of the series/collection.

So, would it be ok to use this pair for Option 1, or Option 2, or not at all?

Moderator note- for them to be part of the same series for use in the SRC, they would have to be noted as such on GR, and to work for option 1, they would have to be noted as #1 and #2 in that series. So this pair would not fit #1.

However, since Days Without End is not noted on GR as being part of a series, it would fit the requirements not be ruled out for option 2, if the author is new to you.

I'm still a bit confused though....if the books don't fit option 1 because they are not noted on GR as being in the same series, then aren't they both ok for option 2 (and it is a new-to-me author)?

Under SRC rules, that the pair is OK for option 2 not ruled out for option 2.

So, I understand from your reply, Sandy, that the books for option 2 can be stand alones? I just want to make sure because the task refers to books in a series.

No, that's a question for Maya, as to whether she wants to require both to be from different series, as opposed to standalone books. However, they are not ruled out under SRC rules, just because the characters in the standalone book relate to characters in a series - the point is that they are not noted as being in the same series on GR.

They can be stand-alones, just have to be the same author. If they're both in a series, must be different tseries

This would work for option 2, for sure. Definitely not option 1.

The information for the series isn't reflected on the metadata so you're fine. This post counts as a lock in in case it is added to metadata in the future.

Christi, as a librarian, I checked and found this..."The Renegades of the American Revolution are historical novels set during the War of Independence. The installments can be read in any order. Each novel presents a complete, stand-alone story, though certain characters do recur throughout the series."...on the author's website. Therefore, GR will not number these books as a series, since the author states that they are stand-alones.

If it's not noted as 1 & 2 on the metadata, it won't count for option one. Sorry :(

Hi, I am wanting to get a couple books ok'd for this task. I am wanting to do option two. The books I am reading are linked by a character, but look to me to be listed as stand alone books. They are
Between Shades of Gray and
Salt to the Sea

If she is a new to you author, this will work for option 2. Otherwise, this will not work. Sorry :(

Hello. I received The Wasteland Saga: Three Novels: Old Man and the Wasteland, The Savage Boy, The Road is a River for Christmas this year, and am wondering if I can use (the first two) for Option 1? In my book, the first novel (The Old Man and the Wasteland: Updated Edition) is 134 pages, and the second novel (The Savage Boy), stand-alone only available in ebook, is 241 pages (from pages 139 to 380). Unfortunately, there is no way for you guys to really verify that. :/

Also, I'm not really sure if all that made sense?

There's no page limit for this particular task. The rule for using ebooks is that you use the page number from the physical copy (I believe, you may have to use the general question thread for this) , which means that you'll have to get the second book approved here before it can be used for any task.

But if that gets approved, this works perfectly fine for option one!

Is this OK for black text?

The text appears black, but if you look really closely it has a kind of pattern through it.

I'll accept it for black. The patterns look more like cutouts than a different color so it's fine by me.

The Lady of the Rivers (The Cousins' War, #3)

It's listed as Cousins' War #3. However, as of August 2016 the series was relisted as the Plantagenet and Tudors #1. Goodreads lists it as both (Cousins War is its first listing and then Plantagenet and Tudors as its second listing). Would this work for option 1?

The White Queen (The Cousins' War, #1)

The second book in the series is as Cousins' War #1 and Plantagenet and Tudors #2. I was also going to use this as the second part of option 1.

I am reading the series in the Plantagenet and Tudors order.

For option 3A, I wanted to read Miss Pinkerton by Mary Roberts Rinehart. I'm reading a first edition version of the book, and since it was published so long ago (i.e. Early 1930's), there is no picture of it on Goodreads. Would it be okay if I just put a link to the image on google?

I'm pretty sure that for SRC in general, it has to be up on Goodreads. I would ask in the general questions thread.
