Well... how about that ending! What did you think of it? Did you see it coming? Did it give you ALL THE FEELS?

Alice Reeds (alice_reeds) | 3 comments Hard to say which feels it gave me, really. I had a good time reading this part of the book, with all the revealing and all, but it happened way to fast. Or am I the only one who thinks that way? (view spoiler) (I know I don't have to mark spoilers in here, but I still do it just in case someone stumbles in here without being done yet and get's spoiled accidentally.)

Anyway, I have a whole review up about We Were Liars on my YouTube Channel. http://youtu.be/fLOmdkTA5wc

Christina (adventuresinpolishland) | 17 comments I'm just going to jump right to the end of this discussion since I've already read the book!

I could NOT believe the end. In hindsight, it was so clear, but my heart broke into a million pieces when I realized what had happened. I was such a mix of angry and sad at the end. I can't imagine how horrible things must have been for these teens to even want to burn the family home down, and now that the family must live without three of their beloved is just terrible.

I really did enjoy the book, and give it a 5 star rating. At first, I wasn't a fan of the writing, but taken as an entire book I can see the artistry in every word, and appreciate how Lockhart took the time to craft this novel. I will be rereading it soon for sure to see where all of the clues can be found.

Thanks for picking another awesome book for Booksplosion!

Mari (mari_ana_) | 12 comments i had to reread the chapter 5 times for it to really sink in for me, i just could not believe it im rereading right now and noticing all these clues so crazy i have to admit i cried!

message 5: by Emily (new)

Emily Krawietz I can say I definitely didn't see this happening. The book overall was amazing and I had trouble putting it down! I flew through this book in one sitting. I loved piecing everything together with the characters throughout the book. Overall I loved this book and gave it a 5 star! Great choice this month booksplosion!!

message 6: by Shaina (new)

Shaina (__xshainajadex__) | 2 comments The ending didn't make sense to me until I reread it... and realised that yes, they were actually dead and yes, she'd spend most of the summer talking to ghosts. I think that we were given so many hints though and it just didn't register. For example:
- No reply to any of the emails she sent in Summer Sixteen. Even though they kind of explained it, it was a hint
- No mention of the presents she sent until she brought it up
- No one but Cady ever said their names or even mentioned them really, except the Grandfather who called her Mirren

I think it was little things like that that kept me interested the whole time. I cried during the end but I'm not sure if it was out of sadness for Cady (probably not, I didn't enjoy her character that much) or for the other three characters.

I gave the book 4 stars, I wasn't a massive fan of Cady but I really liked Gat. The book was very different to anything I've read before.

cece (slowpokereads) (slowpokereads) Gat was the best character, but all in all, it was just okay for me.

I think it was probably because of all the hype booktube has been going on and on and on about.

I didn't feel anything for the characters and I hate reading books about pretentious rich people and the fact that Gat was there made it better. The fact that they wanted to burn down the house didn't make me feel anything.

I thought it was immature. Like they really thought it would fix anything, drunk or not. God. The whole book was just meh for me.

but to each their own.

I hope the rest of you guys enjoyed it. I gave it a 3.5 total, but on goodreads scale it has a 3.

message 8: by Shaina (new)

Shaina (__xshainajadex__) | 2 comments I feel pretty much exactly the same, Sierra. It was a good book, but the hype surrounding the book made me expect a lot more from it.

One thing that really annoyed me was that they were the kind of pretentious rich kids that didn't even bother to learn the names of the staff...

message 9: by alexandra (new)

alexandra (twirlingpages) i finished it in two days and i don't even know what to say. the ending was definitely a shock even with all the foreshadowing. i liked it, but it was a little creepy for me.. it was hard reading from Cady's POV since she was mainly unstable. what bothered me was that we hardly knew the Liars until Year Seventeen and by then they're already dead. i wrote a longer review on my page if you'd like to read all my thoughts on this book! :-)

i didn't even notice those hints! i was thinking about how her mom kept telling her to play with the Littles.

These are the ones I could find

message 13: by Gabriella (new)

Gabriella I really liked this book. When I read the ending, I was shocked at first, but then I realized that it made tons of sense, and that we were getting little hints throughout the book (such as Bonnie going through an apparition phase-maybe she had seen one of the liars?).

message 14: by Cidney (new)

Cidney | 1 comments First of all I didn't understand this book at first when I read it in the second chapter when she got shot I was shocked but then I realized she was just over dramatic but at the was like so harsh cause two of cousins and a long distance cousin die in a house fire so yeah she is basically alone now with no Liars at all

message 15: by Ally (new)

Ally Bryan (allysbookshoparoundthecorner) | 7 comments I saw the ending coming around the middle of the book (this book kind of reminded me of the movie The Uninvited), but I just didn't want to accept it! The ending really bothered me and really stuck with me after I sat the book down. I definitely had to grab a happy contemporary after reading this haha! The buzz around this novel of course hurt it a little for me. The only thing that made me not like this book (as much as all the authors and critics that hyped it up) was that it, to me, was sooo bleak. I can't really bring myself to absolutely LOVE a book that is dark to the point where I can't enjoy reading it.

That being said, I loved how unsettling and creepy this novel was. I read where many authors described it as a "twisted fairy tale" and that is exactly what I would say. The writing was beautiful and the overall tone was so good.

message 16: by Amelia (new)

Amelia | 1 comments I didn't realize it at the time, but I definitely figured out the ending when I read about their plan to start the fire. I remember thinking, "One on each floor...no. No, okay, I understand you're fifteen and drunk but this is the worst arson plan in the world. You should stick together for one thing, and for another there is gasoline everywhere! You do not start a fire with that much accelerant in more than one place, much less on more than one floor and with your accomplices, or you, still in the house! There is no way they live through that in real life."

Guess I was right.

Even so, I was completely devastated on her behalf. It's one thing to not have your memories, to have your mind filled with gaps, and completely another to have them back and know that your best friends in the world are dead. The gaps in her life are still there, but now they're shaped like people and she has nothing and no one to blame for that but herself.

I gave this book four stars, but it's probably more of a 3.5. I rate based entirely on personal taste, and when it comes to contemporary YA I tend towards the cute, fun books with happy endings rather than the heartbreaking angstfests like this one. Also, as far as main characters go, rich pretentious white people annoyed by how rich and pretentious the older generation of their family is...are not my cup of tea at all.

This book is pretty far outside my usual book comfort zone, but I don't regret reading it at all.

mac ireland (cheeseblock) | 7 comments I read this in one sitting. 3 hours with nothing but feels. I can't fathom how amazing this writing is and this story line. The characters were developed so well and it was such a smooth story. I will definatly keep this book with me for a very long time. Thanks for getting me to read it. E.Lockhart, claps to you. And remember everybody, NEVER eat anything as big as your ass.

Stephanie Harrison (ladyofstayne) | 1 comments I started this book very early in the morning and finished at 4:30 a.m. The ending tore at my heart. i didn't see it coming.
The pretentiousness of some of the characters did irritate me at times but, it did not stop me from giving this book 5 stars.

Isabella (lalettura-e-la-mia-libero) | 3 comments I think we can all agree that this was one of the weirdest young adalt books out therw. But I love it. I think the book was so relatable , it makes you feel that that kind of thing could happen to anyone and I think for me is what made it feel rea.

Abbie Lucy (abbielucy) | 4 comments This book was both amazing and confusing. I can't believe I didn't get all the hint throughout the book that they were ghosts, I didn't suspect it at all. Although I'm still a bit confused on how she actually ended up in the sea, I still give it five stars :).

message 22: by Bookworm (new)

Bookworm | 31 comments I still can't believe what happened. I didn't see this coming at all, even though now I realize how many hints we were given. And, I actually thought that I didn't really like these characters; that I didn't care what happened to them. Well, it turnes out that I did care a lot for all four Liars, as I barely managed to stop crying in order to come here and discuss this book.
Despite the great and tragic ending,I feel like the rest of the book wasn't that amazing. I couldn't connect with the characters until the last two parts, and at times it seemed like nothing particular happened.
All in all, I did enjoy this book a lot, even though it will take some time to accept that three of the Liars are dead. I ended up giving this book 4 stars. Once again, a great choice for a Booksplosion read!

message 23: by Ace (new)

Ace Lotti (ashabadash) So many feels in that last what? 20 pages? My heart just BROKE. I had no clue it was coming, and I think that is greatly due to E. Lockhart's excellent writing style! I gave it a 4 out of 5 but I think it's more of a 4.5. Excellent and Quick read!

message 24: by Maria (new)

Maria (maregar) I need a moment. Okay, I really LOVED this book, but it crushed my entire self.

First things first: I loved the author's writting, I have been reading so much (bad)fanfiction-like written books I needed a good author for once. Her use of resources such as metaphors and foreshadowing, her short chapters that made you want to read more and more of them...

People is right when they say it's better to read this book without knowing what it's about, not only because I would have seen the hints to what happened, but because I think I wouldn't have enjoy it that much. I didn't see it coming, but I did, because when they explained the plan to burn down the house my head started listing all the reasons why that was not a good idea. About the characters: They are spoiled rich people, yes. They are pretentious, yes they are. But we know that since the very first line. And I don't know about you but it didn't bother me while reading the book, I just took that for granted, one of the many qualities of the characters - that somtimes I tended to ignore -.

I loved this book. I love how it crushed my heart. The only thing I didn't fully understand is wether she sees the ghost or their presence is due to her guilt and post traumatic stress disorder.

message 25: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) Okay, I did not see that coming. I really want to go back and re-read it and see if I can catch any clues!

I never became attached to any of the characters in this book, but I would say that this was more plot-driven than character-driven. I wanted to know what happened; not because I cared about anyone, but because it was just so intriguing. I think if it had been written in a different style, it wouldn't have been quite as mysterious and attention-grabbing.

And did I miss it, but why were they called the Liars? I feel like I missed something there.

message 26: by Chelsea J (new)

Chelsea J | 11 comments What...I literally just finished and what? Oh my goodness I can't. I really enjoyed this book however I didn't actually feel a connection with any of the characters though the plot was so brilliantly thought through! I did keep getting confused though about the whole 'bleeding' all the time. I wasn't sure if she was being metaphorical or genuinely serious ahaha ahh think I might have to re-read to see what I actually missed. Probably ALOT!

message 27: by Gine (new)

Gine Bugge Sande | 9 comments I liked the ending. It was exiting and even though I was thinking in that direction, I was still suprised! I have to admit, I had some tears in my eyes, but I think it could be even more teary-wet. I gave it 4 stars because it was a interesting read and I really enjoied it! :)

message 28: by Adrianne (new)

Adrianne (rennreads) | 6 comments I wouldn't say it gave me feels since I sort of saw it coming. I don't know, the other Liars were acting too shady and then how the parents were tip toeing around everything. Plus the way Aunt Carrie was wandering at night, that struck me as someone experiencing major grief/loss. Overall I feel like the big reveal was sort of anti-climactic? It was an awesome twist but it could have been revealed a little better.

message 29: by Cam (new)

Cam | 4 comments I was REALLY surprised when I read the ending. But it was good. I liked it, but it was not my favorite.

message 30: by Carol (new)

Carol | 2 comments WHAT? that was my reaction when I finished, I went into this book expecting another overhyped novel that the hype doesn't make much sense, and honestly this was the way I was felling about it, until the least part of the book, my brain wan't capable to process the information until I read the least word, and omg, THE FEELS.
Even thought I have issues with some characters (aka Gat), and that Caty annoyed me in some parts of the history, that final blowed my mind and made me incapable to elaborate coherent phrases about it, and repeating, THE FEELS, THE FEELS was deep.

Brunna Arrais | 3 comments OMG, everything in this book is so intense!!! First I was like "wth is going on?!?" and then this ending.... I cried my eyes out... Absolutely loved this book, five stars!

message 32: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth | 4 comments I don't know about anyone else, but for me what happened to Cadence was totally easy for me to feel empathy for! I have three aunts and every summer I visit them in WA and in cause you didn't know WA has a lot of beaches. I practically grew up with my cousins and we are not that far apart in age, similar to Cadence and her cousins. To me family is one of the most important things in the world and I just can't imagine being responsible for their deaths. I love them all so, so much and I really wish I could reach into to the book and cry with Cadence.

message 35: by Sydney (new)

Sydney | 1 comments Wow just wow. Spent the whole day reading and it was worth it. Some people said they didn't like the writing but for me the writing style was probably the reason I kept going. I caught on with all the hints in the middle but even though I had a feeling I just had to know the ending, the truth, and kept reading. As I was reading the last part I kept crying. gosh the feels had me going for a while. I have to admit the pretentiousness of the adults got on my nerves at times but either way I give the book a 5/5 & can't wait for her next book!

Rhianna (rhi_reads) | 2 comments I was devastated to find out the truth behind her accident! it broke my little heart I honestly cried. But after i found out about the accident it was like oh yeah "I'm eighteen now" the end! WHAT THE BOOK!? I want to know if she ever found another love? what happened when grandpa died? did she go to college? So many questions.

message 37: by Alex (new)

Alex OH MY GOD
I seriously wasn't expecting that ending :O So shocked... But I really loved the book, the writing style was absolutely beautiful, I'll definitely have to have a look at E. Lockhart's other books now...

message 38: by Gabby (new)

Gabby (gabriellaglad) | 9 comments I was not expecting that ending and I give props to Lockhart for pulling it off, but I didn't cry or anything. I had no sympathy for any of the characters because they were all kind of flat to me. Cadence bothered me and it was hard for me to feel bad for her because it just felt like she was whining. And then, it all turned out to be her fault. I did like a lot of Lockhart's writing, but even still it wasn't her best. 3 stars for me.

message 39: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine (jasmineshaheen) I can honestly say that this is one of the best books I've read this year. At first, I hated the writing style, HATED IT!! But, th metaphors and the story was just so good and mismerzing. I couldn't believe that they were dead, I was heartbroken and at the same time I hated Cady and really just wanted her to die. This is truly an amazing novel, I loved the intellectual depth of Gat, their conversations, and despite the fact that they were all very pretentious rich teens except for Gat, they were all characters with mysterious glamour about them. I love this book and will definitely recommend it to many others. Great choice, bookexplosioners! :)))

Uhm, could you explain why you hated Cady and wanted her to die? And why you think that all the Liars except for Gat are pretentious in your opinion? Because those are two things I definitely disagree with...

Jasmine (jasmineshaheen) Alex wrote: "Jojo wrote: "I can honestly say that this is one of the best books I've read this year. At first, I hated the writing style, HATED IT!! But, th metaphors and the story was just so good and mismerzi..."

Oh! I just meant the "rich" when I said "except for Gat" (sorry for the confusion)!
As for Cady, when I found out the truth about what she has done (what they have all done, actually) I was really angry and I hated her at that moment,I hated how irresponsible she was toward something that's so wrong and so dangerous that killed her friends, I hated how they have all died in that fire because of her, but that 's the only moment in which I wanted her dead.

Daniela (daanisc) | 1 comments Wow... Just: WOW! I loved it, didn't see it coming and I'm still shocked, even though I finished these several hours ago. I really like the way everything was being told, how everything is told slowly, with the great help of Cad's tales. The one before part 5 was the most terrifying, with the witch. After I read what really happened I stopped reading and started thinking about everything that had happened so far and yes, the clues were there, I just didn't connect them to that tragic event. Cad spent the whole summer by herself, talking to ghosts, too traumatized to let herself remember. No one talked about them. It was beautiful in a sad, sad way. (The dog part was really creepy, though. And actually I didn't think it was necessary after all) She saying goodbye to them is really, really heartbreaking.
Also, I think this book would make a great movie!

message 44: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Stansbury (jennstansbury) | 7 comments I read this book in one day. I'm not really sure if it was because it was super awesome fantastic or if it was because I wanted to know the truth. I had a feeling that someone had died during summer fifteen. But I had thought it was Cady (Mean girls reference?). I thought maybe she was dead and she didn't realize it. But when we find out the truth in hindsight I can see the clues. They didn't go to Clairmount and her Mummy always wanted her with her GrandDad and the littles. But when I found out it was them I cried. I turned the page and the truth was there and the tears started flowing.

message 46: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Burns | 1 comments This book was fantastic! I will be recommending it to everyone I come across! The ending threw me--since the entire book had me believing the culprit was "Mummy" to the Aunties to even Mirran! Wow, was I surprised at such a turn of events. Well done, Lockhart!

message 47: by [deleted user] (new)

I will admit I was shocked by the ending, and I thought and felt like I was going crazy. But then it all made sense to me and I felt very sad and heartbroken. There isn't even a scrabble word for how I feel...

message 48: by Kate (new)

Kate (katehannififi) | 2 comments I was completely shocked and gobsmacked by the ending! It just sort came out of nowhere and it hit me hard. My heart was racing and pounding very hard for the rest of the novel. I felt awful for Cadence and for her family as well as they had to endure her amnesia and watch her heart break as she discovered the truth. The ending made a lot of sense though as it cleared up a lot of confusion that I had had about some aspects of the book, i.e. Mirrens mysterious illness and the fact that there were toys in Gats room. It was a beautiful and poignant ending and I really enjoyed this book.

message 49: by Kerry (new)

Kerry Rampy | 1 comments I just finished this book and all I can say is wow! I really enjoyed this. I loved the writing style. It was unique and beautiful, and in my opinion very artistic.
I have to say that I did see the end coming shortly after she returned to the island. I really really wanted to be wrong because I loved the liars, but sadly I wasn't. I'm also really glad that I took everyone's advice and went into this book not knowing anything about it. I gave this book 5 stars. I really enjoyed it!

message 50: by Michael (new)

Michael Burns (michaelburns) | 2 comments Completely didn't see that ending coming! I had a theory throughout that Cady had tried to kill herself and forgotten (and everyone felt too uncomfortable/sad to talk about it), but as soon as I read Chapter 79 I started to realise what all of the hints had been leading up to with the twist (The mother telling Cady to play with the littles, the Granddad referring to Cady as "Mirren", Chapter 45; "It'd be a grand place to have my ashes," ... "This is a bad conversation," Mirren says, no-one other than Cady mentions the Liars).
I've been reading some of the reviews and a lot of people seemed to have a problem with the writing style, but I loved it.
Definitely a 5 Star Book for me!
